Playing Collingwood at the SCG might get us a few dollars.

I'd assume we're doing the sums

I guess it all depends on what the situation is in Victoria and the AFL footy landscape post QB.

If we are destined for a couple weeks or a months or 2 of hubs then where is the best place to play QB? If we hub in QLD beyond QB would the Gabba be a better option than the SCG in terms of bums on seats and in turn $$$.

Perhaps we should all pay a levy on our membership? After all we will be spending very little attending games in the  weeks ahead.

My God what a hell of a situation facing the AFL. I often criticise them but I don’t envy them through this crap. Whatever you do will be wrong to someone.

Looking like QLD wants teams to hub for at least a week in Sydney. I doubt they will change their minds. Decisions would need to be made very soon for some of these last remaining matches that currently don't have a venue.

Looks like Sydney then!

Why is there contemplation of the Melbourne V Collingwood game being anywhere else other than the MCG?

Pies are flying in/flying out this weekend.

We're flying in/flying out this weekend.

Both sides will be back in VIC on Sunday in preparation for the Dees V Pies games.

Both sides then have a bye.

Dees then play Essendon the following week in Melbourne.

We should not be hubbing through to 26 June.

I would say the contemplation is based around the uncertainty of whether the AFL will need to return to a hub scenario in order to continue playing the season and avoid having to negotiate with state governments to allow for exemptions and minimise disruptions and preparation of teams subjected to a FIFO scenario. FIFO did not do us any favours last year. We played our best when we were settled in the hub. The FIFO for the North and Adelaide games in Adelaide were the exceptions to this but they were both the bottom teams.

It's just a fact that interstate governments aren't going to let their teams FIFO of Victoria and we can't have teams not knowing where they are playing until midweek each week whilst the teams and the AFL scramble.

This lockdown is not going to end this week and even if things ease in the coming weeks things are not going back to normal straight away. We have to get used to hubbing again for a month or maybe two.

I really think that will be a hard sell to the players after 2020.

The Vic gov't has put itself in a catch-22.  By shutting down the whole state, before having a + case outside Metro Melbourne, it has upset regions.  And, Vic police are strongly saying they will not agree to a 'ring of steel' around Metro Melbourne which apparently the Vic gov't is thinking.  They want a 'spot check' system like they have for .05 testing.

What the AFL is experiencing with business disruptions, lost revenue, worried families etc is being played out all over the state.  With low daily case numbers it is hard to justify level 4 shutdown.  Surely level 3 shutdown needs to be introduced this week.  I won't hold my breath but some easing back is necessary.

If the contact tracing system is up to scratch then lockdown decisions need to be risk based..

Will be interesting to see how the catch-22 pans out.

binman with the solutions:

  • We hub in Sydney (bondi is nice)
  • Fly in out out for the gabba on Friday night (nice short flight)
  • Remain in Sydney for a week chilling in Bondi
  • Fly into Qld and then set up our mini hub in Maroochydore
  • Play pies at the gabba on Monday night of Queens' birthday, making it a big national TV event game
  • Pump it up big time, with a big focus on the Big freeze and raising money for the MND cause
  • Get some bands in and pre match entertainment - make it a big event, kicking off from 5pm
  • Big freeze in the sun!
  • We rest a couple of the younger players who could do with a spell, and give one or two players close to selection a run
  • We thrash the pies
  • We then spend week more in Qld doing our mid season mini camp/retreat/reset/vibing in the warm Gold Coast sun
  • Hunty gets his golf handicap to scratch, Gus gets his downs to 8
  • Positivelingers gets even more positive with some chill beats and surfing with Jonesy
  • We plan our secret moves in secret and train and vibe without masks and other vic restrictions
  • Come home, rested, full of positive vibes, sitting pretty on top of the ladder at 12-1
  • We rest any key players who need more time to chill and give some of the players on the fringes of selection (eg bedford, Bowey, brown, Daw etc etc)
  • We hammer the bombers at the G on sat night in front of a 50% capacity crowd
  • But dees members get first crack and complete fill that allocation, leaving bombers fans to cry into their UDLs
  • After the bombers game we are 13-1

Get it done dees!

Ironic use of the word "spell" given some of the words in this sentence!

This is where the idea of vaccine passports have merit. You vaccinated? You can attend with mask and relevant capacity limits and spacing (none of this closed upper deck nonsense).

I forgot to pull you up on this on the podcast last night.

We did not hub in Tweed Heads last year. I believe we were near Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast. Tweed Heads is actually officially in NSW just south of Coolangatta.

Last year our short stint in a NSW Hub was in Manly.

Great idea.

Except what do you do with the unvaccinated (not by choice) 20 - 39 year old cohorts that support the Dees just as much as the over 40's and deserve to go to the footy just as much?

Contingent on throwing open walk in Pfizer for 18-<50. I should have caveated that.

I get the sense we are at the stage we can open it up, such is the hesitancy amongst the eligible, and given the available supply. This is particularly the case in Vic.

The hesitancy in health workers is worrying.

I honestly don't blame the players. I would not want to be away from an unknown time from my family either.

Surely we need to get thru this next 2-3 weeks and then other states can start to ease their rules around Melbourne based teams. As it is, the risk is minimal while we are all in lockdown.

What's worse? home schooling, 5km radius, or AFL season rapidly going down the toilet?
