Toumpas was not a skilled footballer unless you say someone who cant mark, kicks 30 metres and cant get his own ball is skilled.

Toumpas' hype pre-draft was all about his skill.

So, for example, Knightmare (a well-known draft analyser) said this about him: "Skill level excellent by both hand and foot, has that combination of hurt factor with the penetrating kick he has and clean ball use that will make him a big time weapon".

Footy Almanac said: "He uses the ball by hand and foot excellent, can play inside and outside, while his poise and endurance are superb".

It appears your analysis here is based on hindsight, which is precisely what should be avoided when discussing drafting decisions.

Well, so what. I took one look first game and thought he was undersized, soft and underwhelming. Had a few tricks that got found out in no time. Skilled by foot, yeah 30 metre kicks.

Is it rocket science.

Who would have taken NicNat over Watts?  me

Who took one look at the Greek boy from SA and said, No. me

Who thought Viney and Wines together was a no brainer and would set up the bash and crash mids for a decade.

Who was ever so slightly underwhelmed when they  saw Jessie for the first time, me. Looked good but not the generational hulking forward promised.

Who thought Grimes bro was worth a look, me.

Who thinks Smith is worth the 3 years considering where we are at still needing steady nerves at the death. me

Who is not overly excited at Brown,  me.

And these blokes do it as a professional living.

A much-hyped Naitanui was invited to the 2008 AFL Draft Camp and his results were impressive. He managed to equal the running vertical jump record previously set by Jared Brennan, but fell short of Trent Croad's standing jump record. His sprint, agility and endurance tests were also impressive.

Many media commentators believed that Naitanui was in contention to be taken as the number 1 pick in the 2008 AFL Draft.[6] The Melbourne Football Club, who retained that pick, had looked at Naitanui, but raised concerns about his skill level, in particular his kicking, and instead selected Victorian Jack Watts.

Meaningless quote. We just could not resist the Brighton Grammar boy with the blond hair. And the idiots at melb had to justify by saying the young ruckman, NicNat  had a kicking skill issue. As we know, ruckman are renowned for their kicking skills. Hopeless. Argue all you like. I would have taken NicNat and he turned out the better player

I also didnt like what i saw in Toumpas and wanted Wines HFF but some on here seem to know more and love excuses

We then wasted time hanging on to him Was never going to make it in my opinion

Lost opportunity, and a big one. Viney wanted Wines, not that that should dictate but what it would have done is set the grunt up for a decade, and then focus on the more skilled mids and outside players. Gee, some on here hang on to draft guides , useless stats and game reports out SA, for ..... sake.

the intangible that’s not measured in stats is INTENSITY.  That’s what was lacking with Watts, Hogan, Toumpas.  All good players but the intense desire to drive yourself, get better, work hard and then work hard again.

I look for that quality and then surround it with the other stats.

Wines had intensity and was the DL 90% choice so it remains very disappointing.

That’s why I don’t rate players like Eric Hipwood. Great athlete but poor intensity at the contest. I rate Charlie Dixon. He brings it every week.

Off topic, but I'm sure if we turn our minds to it, we could completely re-cast the Harry Potter movies. We've already seen Chris Judd as Voldemort. I'm convinced Charlie Dixon could play Hagrid with no additional special effects to make him look like a giant.

Wont be my blood that spills

Just so you know about  Toumpas he had skill but you have to know how to use it.

He was never a good Greek fighter on the field.   Another wasted 1st rounder.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
