Bannan is a 178 cm forward, Caris a 190 cm ruck and Simmons a 186 cm winger.

I think we only had 3 above 178 cm before (Pearce, Cunningham and Zanker), with only another couple above 170, so this is an interesting shift.

Has the draft pool got taller, or was this our target?

I wonder if we are looking to move the game more aerial to control the ball, as opposed to the comtested ground ball style that has been promimate?

We’ve gone very young as well but I think that’s a good thing because as the years go by and more players come in with a grounding through a well structured pathway through the under 18s, we are going to see players with more skills and ability.

I think we saw that at the start of 2020 with some of the younger players really displaying skills and movement early.

Tall with some big kicks. That seems a good combination. Work on leading patterns with crumbers. Old school football but if executed well, hard to beat.

Enjoy pre-season and on to 2021!

Comment during the draft was we have looked to rebuild/regenerate while in the window and before another 4 teams enter, so we are not at the bottom when the new teams get all the early picks.

Which, of course, was the men’s team problem with the introduction of Gold Coast and GWS. We got stuck with a crap team that couldn’t regenerate through the draft. At least we have learnt from history

We definitely needed some additional height and marking power so, as long as we have generally picked on merit, this is a good thing.

The younger players coming through have had 10 - 15 years of football right through from Auskick, so are far more developed than older players who have changed sports or joined teams in their late teens. As long as we retain a few wise heads such as Pearce and Scott, this seems like the right mix.

Great selections all round.  One can't judge too much from highlights reels, but the new bunch of girls are a much stronger than before.  Greizer and Patrikios set the new standard last year, and it is good to see a couple of similar players selected.

The other thing is kicking.  I suppose more strength gives more kicking power, but once again a couple of those rookies can kick much further than what we have seen in the past.

Really like the way Mietta Kendall plays.  Hope to see her breaking open packs in the coming year.

I'm really happy we've gone and got some height. Good to finally have a second ruck again, which will free up Zanker with Cordner gone and in case L.Pearce goes down again (hopefully not). Of course, Caris is young and raw but what better way to develop a player than alongside one of the best rucks in the comp.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
