Still gives me nightmares.

It actually nearly doubled when you looked at the Casey game, played as a curtain raiser, where we lost by 20 goals.

From memory it was something like a 50 goal loss over the day.

The Casey game?

Please explain.

Where's Fitzroy now?!

They won the battle, we won the war..?

What’s left of them beat us last Sunday.

I was there.  We sat through it and were stunned in silence at the end. The white flag had gone up.

The next week we came out and beat the Bombers in a huge upset.

The difference was big Carl. Missed the roys game but came back for the bummers. I was at the Fitzroy game but missed the bummers game. I wonder why.?

Those were the days of junk scoring. We averaged 95 points a game and 125 against for the season and finished 2nd last. The previous match earlier in the season Fitzroy kicked 26 goals to our 21. Tackles inside 50 were not invented yet. We did beat them twice the following season though.

Reminds me of the headline, "France knocked out, Britain through to finals".  T'was a close run thing.

It was like watching a tennis match, only my head only turned one way. Bounce, tap out to a Fitzroy player, handball to Gary Wilson and then an old bloke in front of me would cry out "Captain's goal, Gary, Captain's goal!"

I have lived with that nightmare all my life. AND I don't really like the name Gary. (With apologies to anyone named Gary.)?

You poor bastards that lived through that, must have been torture.

I admire the old Demon guard, have been through a lot of pain.

I was definitely there . . . but don't remember much about the game. Without looking up the record book, did Bobby Beecroft kick a bag? I have a feeling Biff might have ended up at full-forward. Spud might have lumbered around and didn't do much. Don't remember what Wells, Fowler and Flower did . . . they were probably out best players that year from memory. Graham Gaunt . . . did he play? Fitzroy were pretty flash in '79, were a better team than Collingwood IMHO who just missed winning the flag.

After the match did you lean over the fence and call Big Carl 'Ditterloss'?

Sorry, I was confused and was referring to 186.

Casey played the Cats as a Curtain raiser to 186 and I saw most of the Casey game as well as 186.

I swore to my family I would never return and but for one game in horrific conditions, I think last year on a friday night, just to keep my son company, I relented. We had more inside 50's and kicked poorly again in another smashing.

I will not return there and use the bypass road when I visit Torquay or the surfcoast.

As to the Fitzroy smashing, the blame lies completely with the MFC Team Manager.

Gaunt was our best player. Kicked a couple of goals and had a lot of the ball. Flower didn’t play. If Warrick Irwin kicked straighter they might have got 40 goals.

They had a bloody good forward line. Irwin, McMahon, Quinlan (although he was probably ruck-roving in those days), Conlan and BBB.
