The wash up from the trade period is that six players - Harriet Cordner, Bianca Jakobsson, Elise O'Dea, Maddy Guerin, Aliesha Newman, and Katherine Smith - have departed Melbourne and the club now has six picks in the top 30:-

3, 9, 11, 23, 27, and 30.

The club must be fairly confident that there is plenty of young talent available from the draft.

And have a definite target for pick 3 given they traded away a few decent picks to go that far up the order.

Agreed. They seem very confident in the top end talent available and are taking their shot.

They've given away quite a bit, both younger and older players. Usually you would associate this with a cleanout of older players to focus on rebuilding with youth, so I'm interested to see what the overall strategy is, or whether there are just some players available that they really, really like.

Are the women playing vfl this winter. For some reason I don't think so. Hope the club knows what it is doing because the draft could be russian roulette.

No VFLW or Under 18s by the look.

According to draft central's Peter Williams, the top 10ish in the Vic draft will be high quality regardless of the compromised state of U18s and VFLW this year. The three names he gave for top 3 are Ellie McKenzie, Alyssa Bannan and Tyanna Smith so will be interesting to see how that pans out. McKenzie's had her name out there for years at this point so it seems unlikely she'll still be there at 3.

Will we see fewer interstate players select for the Victorian zones due to the uncertain situation with COVID? Maybe. Also a really tough time to be older VFLW players and U18 'bolters' trying to stake their claim for the draft. So there'll probably be some surprises and selections that will be unproven or seem left field.

I'm actually quite confident with our selectors because we've done some interesting recruiting from far and wide with our later picks, which suggests they're on the ball and are researching widely, which will help in this difficult draft year.

From the club's website, our AFLW list manager Todd Patterson is saying "This year’s pool is strong (sic) than ever before." The exposed form must be a year old though?

Re interstate players, this aspect is influenced by prospective draftees being able to nominate state/s they will go to.

Anyway, I agree with WWSW; good luck to all the girls. And it's nice having TWO seasons to look forward to!?
