How good is this! Sunday morning, cup of coffee in bed and watching this. Remember going with a Norf mate, face paint and all. Great memories.

We need the 3 word player analysis.

Watched this on Friday night on YouTube. Quite a manic game style we had back then’ that didnt seem too different from chaos ball of 2018. Far less pressure of ball carrier through the middle of the ground too.

Double the scoring shots and twice as many inside 50s in the 2nd quarter for a 21 point lead. Sounds bloody familiar. Should have been 10 goals up

Went to this game so excited about the future & really believed that group should have won a flag during that era... as usual the fell off the cliff in 2001 with poor off the field decisions .

Neitz , Schwartz & Robbo crashing packs up forward, what a delight to watch, not sure we have had a player like that since..

Yeah since Neitz & Schwartz, has the club had a major key forward??? Hogan didn’t hang around , Tom MacDonald who knows.

This game will always be remembered for the Wiz show but Powell’s performance was pretty special too.

Hard to believe we let a midfielder that kicked 4 goals in a prelim (And 3 goals the following weeks GF ) go to St Kilda 2 years later- for no return.

Agreed BBP,  just as baffling as why Footscray let him go in the first place.  Did he leave us for more money at Moorabbin?

At the end of the 2000 season he underwent an operation for Osteitis Pubis and a slow recovery that was initially supposed to see him out for the first few weeks of the season ended with him missing all of 2001. Powell returned for the 2002 season and was once again one of his side's best.

After a pay-dispute at the end of the season Powell walked out on Melbourne and was picked up for free by the St Kilda with the first selection of the pre-season draft. He remained with the Saints until 2006 when he retired.

How good was the game? Not the result but the free flowing contested footy with no umpires interference (the incessant play on if the player takes time to find a target) and the open centre bounce where a ruckman could run and take a leap. White and Simmonds were outstanding and made the game look better (I know there are knee injury issues but there needs to be a better answer than the small circle and the repeated pushing and shoving).

Its time to tell the umpires to shut up and let the game flow. The players know best. And what about white jackets and hats for the goal umpires - got to be better than the tee shirts and baseball caps.

All these replays have displayed to me that the game was better when there was no "kicking down the line" and constant switching looking for cheap stats. Traditional kick ins from the square were a better means to restart the game and create a contest.

What's worse, listening the BRuuuuuuce, Dermie, Landy and others reminded me that they were old hat 20 years ago but they are still with us. No wonder I don't miss footy as much as I should. Gil and the boys have neutered the game and it is less like real footy than it was.

After the virus society will have to start again. This is an opportunity for our beloved great game to go back a bit and realise what made it great. It used to be a fast moving and attractive spectacle, now it is a dour struggle.

That's all. Off the soap box.

He missed a bunch of gettable goals in the first quarter of that premlim

Haven’t watched this game in years but I’ll take your word for it. In that case I guess Powell could’ve kicked 6 in a prelim.

Powell was part of the pack including Woewodin and A MacDonald - three hard running, front of pack, goal kicking left footers. Together they were a formidable and at times unstoppable force. It was the threesome that was destructive.

After losing 2001, by 2002 the coaches had destroyed Woey and the effectiveness of the pack was all over. Sad but at least he never showedd something extra at the sainters than he showed with us.

Yep somehow the mfc find a why to fall off a cliff... believe the 2000 group were worthy of a flag & Failed to play finals in 01. Similar to 2018 unable to maintain the intensity consistently to win the ultimate.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
