I don’t think sorting out a training facility that we don’t have to share with another club after 151 years is a sweeping statement.

Actually, it is.

Again, add something. Look forward. Where do you think we should we go? What are your thoughts on the pros and cons? You know, nuance...

If you can and care to, that is.

Whatever options are available, stop gap type ones cannot be considered.

If you want to see what a 50 year plan for facilities looks like, then have a look at Essendons at Tullamarine.  2 ovals one the size of the MCG, the other the size of Docklands.  An indoor facility the size of 4 basketball courts and an administration headquarters.

This is the future of what is needed, and it is why Hawthorn is moving.  Waverly is not big enough for the future.

SO to be serious about the future, a facility needs 10 + acres of space....as has been pointed out by others, that is not available within 10km of the city.

I hope that we can secure some sort of government assistance, but a serious amount as well.  To get to AAMI, I think we got $2M while RIchmond got $12M, the Dogs gifted land and facilities of $16M.  Now Carlton, Richmond, Geelong, St.Kilda are all getting huge handouts.  Why not us?

We do not have the member base / success / sponsor / backers that the bigger clubs like Essendon and the Hawks have to attract the interest/funding for that sized facility George.  It will never happen.

I would much rather see us have a home in the medium term than none at all.

Waverley, subject to a decent refurb spend, post the Hawks in 2022 makes complete sense as an interim until we achieve some on field success that pushes us towards the supporter base of the big 4.  Ie; 75,000 plus members.

You don't climb Mr Everest without going to (& setting up) base camp first.  We have no chance of getting to the summit without the interim option.

Waverley is the obvious best interim option within striking distance of the CBD and gives us plenty of time to plan and raise the funding for the refurb & move.

It also has it's own oval and a decent sized one to train on.  None of this nomad nonsense between different sized grounds, one of them over 50kms from AAMI... a 100km+ / 1.5 hour round trip!  What a waste of valuable time just travelling (and that's off peak...add another 30 minutes during most, respectable, hours).

Waverley or bust.

Unfortunately Waverly now has severe parking issues due to being a full on and built up residual area.

Rusty... your points are well made and that is why Casey is the answer. The Government will provide the money and land out there whereas for the inner city.... forget it even if you could find the land.

Have a look at the Eagles press release... it's all about community benefit etc

There is Zero parking for public at AAMI SK. Some limited zoned parking for admin/FD out back i believe.

I've been to WP a number of times and while it is limited there is some parking for the public.  The 900 bus drops you outside also on Wellington Rd and intersects with Caulfield, Oakleigh and Huntingdale rail stations which Hawk supporters have been using effectively for years to go visit/watch training etc.

Even one of their trainers catches the 900 from Stud Park (or used to) to get there and back for many years.

Thx DJ.  It may well be the summit but will need major development spend.  We won't get that 'At this point' IMO as we just aren't seen as a player.  Get to base camp first under say a 5 year + 3 option (or similar) at WP from 2022...then go from there.  Assuming success follows with a cup (or more) or via a very solid team/club that's a regular finals contender.

But but but it is not at the G RN!

If we are that stuck in the mud then we will mostly likely stay there OD!  The Hawks are the benchmark and 4 premierships out of there says its fine as a potential interim option once they vacate.

We need to wake up and Waverley, subject to a feasability on facilities / potential upgrade / Cost benefit... should be a serious contender in the mix if not the No.1 priority on the list.

The only problem with Waverley RN, is if we move there, how would we be improving what is already there, to gain government funding?

Yeah, I have found parking there as well a few times but had heard it is a factor in Hawthorns decision to move. If parking is manageable it is a great facility and fantastic for supporters with a cafe, merchandise area and clear viewing areas.

Many ways to skin a cat DD.  We won't need mega funding vs say a Mt Everest complete build from scratch option that will see us out in the sticks somewhere or the 'Walter Mitty' near our beloved G option like Yarra Park.

Center management are constantly changing the mix of their retail and positioning at major shopping centers to move with the times, offering improved community facilities (health / gyms/ organic food options etc) which drags in extra traffic & potentially profit etc.

Might be a new mix of who / what is being offered plus a medium upgrade to some facilities both retail/club related.  But nothing like the spend needed for the Mt Everest or  'Walter Mitty' near the G options.

Base camp on a budget is more likely to get the funding than a push straight to the summit.

The Hawks have won 4 premierships out of there (so far) SK prior to complaining that their present home is no longer viable.

We don't have a home and have won Zero cups in the modern era (post VFL becoming the AFL).

Let's get a home first and win our first cup then we can start complaining.  Beggars cant be choosers im afraid.

RN, WP might work as a training venue but not as a whole of club base as we have several hundred full time and part time staff who live in all parts of Melb and rely on public transport.  They have good transport links to mcg precinct with trains and trams.

Many would not or could not readily get to work at WP and we would be faced with potential $ payouts, recruiting and training new staff.  Not to mention loss of valuable experience.

These are the same reason why Casey won't work for us.

Also, Mirvac are heavily involved in WP surrounds and are in the throws of their 'finale' development.  Fair chance it will build more housing on land other than the oval.  And HFC have a freehold over the park and own some of the facilities.

Last thing I want is for our training base to be under the eyes of the Hawk's supporters who live around the boundary of the oval.  Enemy territory.

Edit:  just read your latest post:  'Beggars can't be choosers'.  We already are beggars.  We would just be moving our cup to WP.  Would rather stay begging at Gosch's.

So we abandon the MCG and leave it to collingwood and go half way to Gippsland ?

You've never seen a corporate move its headquarters and lose / turn over staff LH?  Then you haven't lived.

Our FD / admin wouldn't be using the land just the oval.  Build away Mirvac.

If we have success the Hawks supporters will be a squirming and gnashing their teeth.  They might end up moving out (around Gosch's and surrounds!) and Demon supporters move in.  Nothing stays the same LH.

And if any serious Hawk wanted so spy there is a free reign (plus any other club spys) at our open sessions at Goschs.

And i doubt the Hawk supporters will be too eager to watch us right now given our recent (55 plus years and early this season) lack of success vs their domination since the 70s.

WP for the interim home/win!!

Unfortunately, in my working life I have seen several corporate HQ/Divisonal moves.  If not properly done it can rip the heart out of an organisation.

If we only use the oval where do all the offices, gyms, pools and other facilities go?  Where is the parking?

WP sounds like a fantasy...

That's part of the feasability surely LH.  You obviously don't move in unless all boxes are ticked and viable.

Less Walter Mitty than Yarra Park or Casey LH and more than likely nowhere near as costly!

Are you saying this is all being demolished once the Hawks leave LH?

“Max Gawn has been the heart and soul of the Dees for years now, but this recent recovery from a terrible start has been driven by him. He was everywhere again, and with the game in the balance, he took several key marks to keep the ball in the Dees forward half.” - The Monday Knee Jerk Reaction: Round Ten Of course, it wasn’t the efforts of one man that caused this monumental upset, but rather the work of the coach and his assistants and the other 22 players who took the ground, notably the likes of Jake Melksham, Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Kozzie Pickett but Max has been magnificent in taking ownership of his team and its welfare under the fire of a calamitous 0-5 start to the season. On Sunday, he provided the leadership that was needed to face up to the reigning premier and top of the ladder Brisbane Lions on their home turf and to prevail after a slow start, during which the hosts led by as much as 24 points in the second quarter. Titus O’Reily is normally comedic in his descriptions of the football but this time, he was being deadly serious. The Demons have come from a long way back and, although they still sit in the bottom third of the AFL pack, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as they look to drive home the momentum inspired in the past four or five weeks by Max the Magnificent who was under such great pressure in those dark, early days of the season.

  • CASEY: Southport

The Southport Sharks came to Casey. They saw and they conquered a team with 16 AFL-listed players who, for the most part, wasted their time on the ground and failed to earn their keep. For the first half, the Sharks were kept in the game by the Demons’ poor use of the football, it’s disposal getting worse the closer the team got to its own goal and moreover, it got worse as the game progressed. Make no mistake, Casey was far and away the better team in the first half, it was winning the ruck duels through Tom Campbell’s solid performance but it was the scoreboard that told the story.
