What happens when the majority of your best 22 players don't have preseasons?  Their skill drop off because you haven't trained them or practised them.  When your skills drop off your confidence drops off.  Confidence is above the shoulders.  Poor preseasons clearly impact confidence, particularly when so many players are impacted. I'd contend that many of our "above the shoulders" stem from a poor preseason.

And anyway how can you say all our issues are above the shoulders when you've said losing AVB, Melksham and Jetts hasn't helped?

Misson reports to the Board we've had a terrible preseason and we will struggle.  He was right.

We have to be the only club in the history of the game to play finals, have players go under the knife in the preseason, and such was the significance and impact to THE ENTIRE TEAM, that in a matter of months we become one of the worst teams in the comp.

Misson's report to the board isn't a reason or justification. It acts as an excuse now. And highlights how unprepared the football department was for the consequences of its own actions.

That they knew there would be a slow start to the season isn't reason enough as to why we're having a poor season. It's part of the underlying problem, and imo puts significant pressure on Goodwin and co.

With all due respect Saty your credibility on this particular issue is not high.

Credibility?

You do know this is Demonland?

My credibility is on par with every other poster

We are basing our opinions on what we have seen, heard, read etc

Unless of course we have a poster, hiding behind a nickname, who is actually a member of the FD

If so, they should emerge with a definitive statement

Otherwise this whole thread, is like all others on Demonland, opinion and conjecture, with the same level of credibility for each post

Goodwin when justifying playing a player, coming back from rehab, specifically said on a few occasions  'we think he has done the amount of training load required' So who is right?

i'd have thought an official report to the board trumps a bit of media propaganda by the coach, wouldn't you?

Not sure what people are missing here, especially as it was covered in the original post.

This is *NOT* just about fitness. If pre-seasons were just about fitness, we wouldn't even have one. Each player could be given an individual fitness program and they could just meet up on the morning of the first JLT match.

I think the club leaked the information.  It was reported after our disastrous start to the season when media, the footy community and most importantly the fan were focusing so strongly on our failures. Some deflection was needed.

Goodwin refused to give his players an excuse publicly, he didn’t want to give them an out and rightly so. It’s a little like injuries. We all know they have a huge impact but we don’t use them as an excuse. So we leaked this information to release the pressure and educate people as to why we were performing poorly. It was a smart and sensible thing to do.

I can’t be bothered debating those who think our disastrous preseason is nothing but an excuse only to say if preseasons weren’t important why have one? A poor preseason impacts fitness, skills, connection, confidence, game plan and yes, results. To deny that just denies logic. We’ve all heard a hundred time players who have had great seasons say you can’t do it without a great preseason.

But what would they know?

Our preseason is probably not the only thing that has gone wrong but in my opinion it’s the core reason. You can cover up a lot of things but preseason’s and injury you can’t.

Is it the reason we have performed so poorly though? A preseason may excuse not finishing top 4 but does it account for finishing bottom 4? I think it's a factor but there are other factors as well which, if not addressed, will impact our chances at success in the future.

As they say the proof of the pudding will be in the eating and that will be our 2020 season.

The main thing now, of course, is for the club and FD to focus on making sure our list is cherry ripe for day 1 of preseason in a few months. Don't play players in nothing games and send them off for surgery again in September because this excuse won't wash in 12 months time.

Yep, and I think that's a big part of the problem.

No new game plan...

Exactly. That game plan was obliterated last September, but we are still seeing it being used. Either Goodwin is stubborn or it is the only plan he has...

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
