A ROAD TOO FAR by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons didn't have far to travel when they took on Richmond VFL Tigers in neighbouring Beaconsfield in a pivotal game as far as their finals aspirations were concerned.

Unfortunately, they played the first half as if they had traveled thousands of kilometres and were still suffering jet lag, managing only a single point in the opening quarter against the inaccurate Tigers who were helped by a goal on the siren to 2.5.17 and a 16 point lead. For Casey the trip seemed like a journey down a road too far.

The Demons were always going to be in trouble in this match given that the injuries ravaging the club at AFL level meant that only 9 of the Melbourne list were selected for the game - half that of the Richmond team. Of those, only five had any AFL experience at all and in any event, a few of the Demon listers made minimal contributions to the team effort. 

Matters only got worse when the home side straightened up and outscored the Demons by four goals kicking 5.1 to 1.1 in the second term to blow out to an insurmountable 40 point lead by the main break. Casey's only goal for the half came from the boot of small man Aloysio Ferreira whose spectacular scissor kick was one of the team's few highlights to that stage apart from the hard work of Jack Trengove and Ben Kennedy.

That pair and rookie Corey Maynard provide the few touches of class on the visiting side for much of the match. Ruckman Jake Spencer held his own in the ruck duels but like many of his teammates achieved little with the football.

With the game virtually done and dusted and rain falling, the Demons finally made a better fist of things after half time. The defence worked hard to shut down the strong Tiger attack and while the game became a scramble, the Demons managed to prevent Richmond from pushing out their lead in the third term. While the Tigers relaxed a little at the end, Casey finished strongly to keep the margin down to 28 points in the end. 

Corey Maynard continued to impress with his hardness at the ball while Casey's Mitch Gent, Bayley Fritsch and Angus Scott (2 goals each in the second half) and James Munro (17 tackles) in defence were the best of the VFL listed players.

Casey should welcome the week's bye because it desperately needs a boost in personnel if it is to challenge for the finals.

He was fairly inconspicuous for most of the game but did a few nice things at the end and is certainly worth a few more games to test him out. He finished with five touches but also laid six tackles.

The field was fairly limited yesterday and a number of players who took part are not really in contention.

You can rule a line through Sam Weideman who has had a couple of slow weeks after his six goal game at Box Hill. He simply isn't going to replace Tom McDonald, Jesse Hogan or Cam Pedersen at the moment and don't forget that Jack Watts is a possible selection for next week.

Dion Johnstone, Declan Keilty and Mitch King aren't ready and Mitch White was dropped last week and will find it hard to make a return very soon - if at all. As I mentioned in my report, Jake Spencer won hit outs but doesn't get enough of the footy. He took just one mark last week and none yesterday which, even allowing for the conditions, is not good enough if you're 202cm tall.

Unfortunately, Jack Trengove's cards seem to be marked. If he was going to get a game it would have been this week. I can't see him breaking into the team ahead of the older heads he's competing against for a spot in the side and Dom Tyson is likely to return next week and is way ahead of Jack. Paradoxically, Jack is one of the "form" players at the club because, if you think about it, he hardly puts a foot wrong, week in, week out. 

Corey Maynard must be close to getting a go and I wonder how close he got this week to a Category B rookie upgrade ahead of Joel Smith who Goodwin gambled on instead despite the fact that Smith had only one game under his belt after a return from a long term injury of nearly three months - a decision that nearly backfired. 

That leaves Ben Kennedy who will no doubt be regretting those after match drinks from a fortnight ago. He was pretty close to best for Casey and put in a four quarter performance but again, is no better than on par with the last two or three in the MFC team, so is unlikely to get a nod from my viewpoint.

 The most likely to get a run would be Jay Kennedy-Harris who didn't play for Casey as he was the carry over emergency for Melbourne today. His form has been hot at Casey for more than a month and, as long as stays away from the drinks, he could get a run in Darwin.

The Demons are once again traveling on a six-day break. It might pay for Goodwin to shuffle the deck and bring in some fresh players which is something he was unable to do last time because of the misdemeanours of JKH and his mates. Ironic but a new trio of Watts, Tyson (subject to their fitness) and JKH might be just the thing to freshen up the team for the big game in the Top End v Adelaide.

A couple of questions for regular Casey watchers please:

Is Dion Johnstone coming along ok, weight for age?  I note he was named as emergency a coupe of weeks back.  What role do you think he is being groomed for?

Maynard - any closer to being ready for a senior game?  If so where?

My view of reading reports and reading the coaches comments is that we are down to the bottom of the barrel with our reserves. I don't think there is much left at Casey to promote. Unless we get injured players back we stay with the 22 from last week.

I think you are spot on Old dee.

JKH probably increased his slim chance of selection by being the emergency and not playing

We just gave JKH a contract extension so you would think he is a chance. But Kennedy and Trengove are sadly gone.
