Saty, more care is good but I strongly believe that you play as you train and Hulett wants to impress so good on him. Next time round Watt should put him on his ar4se. As if that would happen.

have to train hard with intensity.

train hard but not tackle or make contact in a reckless manner.

but easier said than done with a competitive list.

Hulett's approach to the contest was reckless, it was a training drill, it was pure luck he didn't seriously injure Watts

As I said he also got Hannan as well

A bit critical there...

Yeah but have you ever been on an AFL list?

Good! Train as you play! Can't ask the opposition to take it easy

Agreed. The more I saw of him last year the less excited I was. He's not tall enough to be a stay at home contested marking machine. Doesn't have much of a leap of him either. He's not quick or agile enough to be a lead up forward. He's not skilled or smart enough to be a third forward option like Watts or Petracca. I can't see him making it at AFL level. He's depth for 2 years and then delist material in my opinion.

Grundy went to Sydney as a forward, but couldn't cut the mustard.

It may be worthwhile having a look at him in defence even though the club may see him more as a forward.

yep...Im getting over the Watts bashing too. I cant believe we're back here to be honest....after all the work Roos did to change the subject

I'm sick of it too. It's boring. And unimaginative in the extreme.

It's also sleazy from a factual perspective - Watts remains a required player.

I said reckless, which any fool, including those on here can understand, but can also understand why he is the way he is, perhaps like Viney needs to temper it ever so slightly against team mates

 From last year.....

"However Jones said player safety on the training track was paramount, with teammates urged not to inflict any preventable injuries.

“I think it’s just the risk of injury after a long pre-season, that’s why in that case yesterday Tommy fired back. Jack’s really competitive and so are most of our players,” Jones said.

“We try to stick to not dumping blokes in tackles. If someone’s coming back with the flight of the ball, you’re not running through them with a spoil coming the other way. There’s a bit of care taken with tackling and a bit of care taken with particular aerial contests.” ( my emphasis)

I wasn't at training so I can't comment on what Hulett did. But to those who say you train like you play -. If you can take the body in marking contest in game you go for it - you don't do that at training to a teammate  - so no...you do not necessarily train as you play - you keep the intensity at the ball but you may restrict the impact on a teammates body which you would not do in a match.

Great get. This should be the standard.

My point is, I hope it wasn't Watts that got spoken to this time.

I agree but I think what you're talking about might be a technical issue for Liam, you want the intensity with as little risk as possible, jack Viney certainly doesn't seem to take it easy on anyone at training so it's a balanace

No Saty, I was just going on DeeSpencer's report:

For whatever reason, I wouldn't be surprised to see Spencer in & Watts out, with something like this as the excuse.

If so, I apologise for misinterpreting.

I know it's a fan forum, and if we didn't do what I'm about to say then we wouldn't have much to talk about, but given the amount of insight we have with regards to training, training loads, training input, GPS data, etc, etc, that we can form a view of why or why not a player will be selected.  Even more so if you don't/didn't attend training.  It's why I have no view on the co-captaincy, just as much as I don't really have a view on the Watts situation.

I have family that play in the AFL, have been on AFL lists previously and are still aspiring to get drafted. I can assure you at Christmas when we all catch up, table tennis, pool (snooker), chin up competitions and anything else that we can possibly compete at are front and centre of our Christmas Day celebrations.

You do not get on an AFL list without being extremely competitive.

You can't just put the cue in the rack at training in case someone else gets hurt. You would have never got there in the first place with that kind of mentality.

Having watched him all last season at Casey and the few number of training sessions I've been too, I disappointedly don't think Hulett will ever make it past VFL unless he has a huge development spike in the next season or two, I feel bad for the guy as he seems to work hard but ultimate I don't think he will get there.

Without ever having seen him in action, if he doesn't make it it will not be the end of the world for the club nor an indictment on our recruiting or player development, though of course it would be bitterly disappointing for Liam.

There must be data on what proportion of third round pick big men play senior footy at all, how many become regulars and how many actually make a big impact.  I suspect that only a minority become regulars.

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out
