They'll still win games this year (3-4)

We won 2 games in 2013 and Essendon's best 22 after the top ups they'll get will be superior than Melbourne circa 2013.

Round 2 reeks of problems if we don't come switched on. Anything less than the attitude and application we showed against Geelong last year and we'll probably be the first side to lose to them.

Daisy cutter any conspiracy theory is better than none. Read in the Herald-Sun recently a Carlton supporter had concerns about Essendon recieving first round draft pick for coming last. Perhaps technical tanking could be used to achieve the required output. What pisses me off is how sides give up when they realise that they can't make the finals and their hidden agenda is to finish as close to last so as to maximize you beaut draft picks. My radical solution is for the bottom six sides from round 16 to round 21 play each other and the team who performs best (wins and percentage) gets the first draft pick,the second team get the 2nd draft pick and so on. To be fair to the remaining clubs in the last round the top side plays the bottom side,second team plays the second last team and so on. The AFL already implemented a radical plan by having a bye in the last round to prevent the fiasco that occured with the Kangas and Freo.

My solution would be to add the number of wins over a 5 year period and do it that way.

No team is going to want to be rubbish for half a season just so they get a pick lower

Who wants to stay Garbage for 5 years waiting. 

The MFC was garbage for 3-4 years because clueless idiots were running the place. 

Rewarding draft picks through effort rather than being a loser would sort the fixture out real quick

Why not give real incentive to win those last 5 games?

Too many teams hang up the boots after the mid season bye at the moment. It's boring. 

Bottom teams fighting it out late in the season on a friday night would be great..

I agree this is a major issue.  The last few years our season is over by round 5, let alone round 11.

you wait all year for the season to start with the sole goal of making finals to have a chance to win the flag.  Then half way through ~6/7 teams are no chance at all.  what are they playing for?  to improve/game plan blah blah.  a footy game without a real reward or goal is pointless. I can certainly see a new draw in the coming years where each plays each other once and then it splits into 3 groups with rewards for each.

Using Adelaide as an example.

Year 1 - play teams 2 through to 18 once = 17 games. They would then play teams 2 - 6 again giving them another 5 games played and a total of 22. 

Year 2 - play teams 7 through to 6 once = 17 games. They would turn play teams 7 - 11 again giving them another 5 games played and a total of 22.

Year 3 - play teams 12 - 11 once, 12 - 16 twice.

Year 4 - play teams 17 - 16 once, 17 -5 twice. 

And so on....

 

This tells you what teams play what teams and how many times per year. Games wouldn't be played in that order, that way games such as Anzac Day, Dream Time and QB can still happen on their respective days. 

Home games rotated (may take 2 years).

For me this is the fairest draw but it will never happen for the obvious reasons.

As an anti tanking measure I wonder if the AFL could be interested in running extra games during the finals series for all teams that miss the top 8.    

A round robin type competition between all the non finalists with the draft picks being awarded to the better performed teams in this 'consolation final' comp, maybe over the first two weeks and a 'consolation GF' on PF weekend, of course not clashing time wise with the real PFs.

That may be seen as being unfair on the really bad performers - not that fairness has ever been any consideration at AFL - so to simplify this mini comp 9-14 could play off for picks 5-10, and 15-18 for picks 1-4 again with the winners being the winners.   6 and 4 team round robins are certainly easier to organize than 10.

Teams that are constantly bad need to ask themselves why,Peter Jackson came to the Dees to clean their act up.Paul Roos became coach,recruiting improved and will to continue to improve. The team that is on top of the EPL is finacial poor and have very few stars compared to Man City,Man Utd,Arsenal etc and yet they managed to succeed.Extra games for non finalists will make the comp long winded and the players association would not allow it. When we recruited Neeld who in turn recruited duds ( except Hogan) we got what we deserved.The Management at the time were sub standard.

Teams could still tank and position themselves to play off for draft pick 1.

I red eye I blue eye,go to previos page,the suggestion I made would prevent tanking. Nothing worse than your side giving up in a match even before the whistle is blown.

 

Again, today's news again shows how compromised the draw is.

5 teams play Essendon twice, - GCS, Geelong, Richmond, Carlton, and St Kilda.

Melbourne only plays Essendon in round 2 and Carlton in the second last round.

The Saints get both to play both Essendon and Carlton twice.

Given how bad we have been for the past 7 odd years It would be hypocritical for us to complain about this.

 

of course Geelong the AFL's pet gets to play them twice

 

 

Like getting Danger, another Selwood, Henderson, Zac Smith wasn't enough. Not their fault I know but it puts a cherry on top for their top 4 aspirations. Frustrates me

The Dees couldn't beat a [censored] weak Essendon Side last year,only playing them once is a blessing in disguise.
