Jack Watts in 2016?

Featured Replies

Okay.

Time to let it go.

One group will have bragging rights as the 2016 footy season unfolds....

If he doesn't cut it, no one will have bragging rights; as if he loses out, then we all do, as well... or it should be this way.

I hope he comes good & digs deep to find that, he lacks.

Those who say his dropping in round 22 meant nothing your kidding, it was a game where the club was looking to the future whilst commemorating Crossy's career, and the coaches didn't think Watts didn't fit the side for either of those tasks!!

I think watts dropping was as much a message to the whole list, as much as to JW

..... that 2016 is going to be a very different kettle, compared to past seasons. & lack of effort, heart, & competitiveness will Not be tolerated, any longer.

Disagree, Watts being dropped was a message to Watts.

Grimes being dropped round 1 was a message to the list as a whole.

Oh really, a msg to the rest of the list hey, not JW? So who else on our list plays like a pea heart? Who else was that warning shot aimed at? Poor little jacky took one for the team did he? Keep pulling yourself deluded, it's what your good at, posting not so much.

Typical response from Father Stuie

Can you seriously imagine Jack Watts playing a solid game in late September?

Think hard before throwing back a response Father.

Decent players don't drop themselves from a senior team.

Watts is way down the pecking order now

Another ordinary season in 2016 & he won't progress.

Attitude is all wrong sadly.

He played 20 games this year, despite the fact every year of his last 4 has been labelled "make or break" by the same Demonland posters every time.

Everyone just wants to make definitive statements like "next year is make or break" or "next year will be his breakout year".... Maybe he's just a decent player and that's it. He's not a "spud" he's not a star, he's just a decent player. Everybody wants to be the tough guy on an internet forum going a hard as they can to one extreme or the other, and you're definitely the epitome of that.

There are "decent players" who play for Casey in the VFL...

There are "decent players" who play for Casey in the VFL...

And there's plenty in top 4 teams as well. No team plays 22 superstars every week.

Watts is a C+ player ... sometimes B-. It's been that way for a few years now.

Previously, we've had an abundance of D grade players so Watts was an obvious best 22 - then.

Now, our list is on the verge of becoming much stronger so Jack will need to become at least B- consistently (or better) in order to be best 22.

If he can somehow raise his game to B grade level then he'll be comfortably best 22. It's all in Jack's hands.

Everyone has a different grading system but I see a B grade footballer as a player who plays well most weeks and rarely, if ever, gets dropped. A solid contributor who plays his role and can beat his opponent.

B+ is very good or excellent and A grade is elite, a gun and a champion of the game. The A grade status is bandied around far too easily - A grade should be reserved for game breakers and genuine match-winners.

The draft pick number he was picked at is now quite irrelevant.

An excellent summary and i concur with your analysis.

Using the same formula i have more concerns about Dawes getting a regular game than Watts and its worth remembering we gave up pick 20 for him.

Ugh. Imaginary grades based on opinions, used to decide something where grades aren't even relevant.

"I would only agree that a symbolic clock is as nourishing to the intellect as a photograph of oxygen to a drowning man."

His impending free agency is one very good reason as to why it is different this year. Not really for the on field scenarios but certainly for his future.

Previously the club hasn't wanted to trade Jack away for peanuts and Jack hasn't wanted to leave by forcing a trade. Both sides have been loyal.

There's now a situation where either side can feign loyalty whilst exploring options for either a fresh start or compensation.

Who has the more upside? - I'd say Watts comfortably but upside doesn't always eventuate.

Yeah, it's an opinion. What do you think we're here for?

So what's your grading system?

Why have a grading system? Do you think that's how we pick our 22 each week?

If Jones is an A grader and Dawes is a C grader, do we then play Jones at CHF?

Stuie i don't care what you think of me or my opinions. But the facts are in 7 years JW has not produced the standard required. He has 1 season left before a new contract is made

So 2016 will make or break him.

You call him a decent player. I don't think he has reached that level.

Great.

So you're taking a 2 month sabbatical too ?

I should perhaps also note that, when we win this bet, I'll be disappointed if you take a 2 month sabbatical.

You're a quality poster and I enjoy reading (most of) what you post.

Net loss if you take a holiday because you've got it wrong on Watts.

Well somehow he's made it through his previous "make or break" contract years too... Stop being such a drama queen

Disagree, Watts being dropped was a message to Watts.

Grimes being dropped round 1 was a message to the list as a whole.

so what was the message to watts, & was there any message sent to the rest via watts sacking from the game?

Why have a grading system?

We nearly all have grading systems - whether it's with a description only and/or with a letter attached (A, B, C etc)

I take it you do neither so your future posts won't include a description of a player or a "letter" to help describe that particular player.

Not sure I agree with a letter grading system for analyzing footy.

An A+, I assume, would be the best player in the competition. But doesn't everybody have room for improvement in some way? Therefore how can they be an A+ if they can conceivably get better?

I think it's best to compare players to other players on the list and in the competition without arbitrary "grades".

I think of Watts in relation to the other position players that he's competing with for a spot.

If he's going to play as a tall forward, how does he rank against Hogan, Dawes, Pedersen, Weideman, Frost, etc?

If he's going to play on a wing, how does he rank against Stretch, Vince, Lumumba, etc?

If he's going to play on a flank, how does he rank against Petracca, Trengove, Kent, etc?

How many of each of these categories will we take into each week's best 22?

Spot on. Otherwise we'd see Viney as a ruckman, Vince as a KPB, Garlett as a rebounding defender....

I've used "A grader" as a term before, and probably will in the future. But I use that term as saying that player is one of the best in the comp, not as a comparative grade which I then go through and weight against other players, ie - I don't use B grader, C grader, High Distinction player, RPL player....

I think watts dropping was as much a message to the whole list, as much as to JW

can't you read? the message was to jackW, but why as they tried to part him out, or at least put the rocket of insecurity under his tushy.

the is also a message to the list of an expectation to get tougher, & not let things slip because we pick an under-performing JW thru the season. so don't let any complacency from JW creep in.

when you keep picking a player who won't do the hard stuff, the others can start to drop off. this is the way to lose any gains in culture.

why would you drop a player in the last Rnd you intended to trade off for a nice pick? so the footy world can see all?

So you use A grade but nothing else ... so how do you describe players who aren't A grade?

I'm genuinely interested.

Ummmm with words?....

I just think there's more grey areas to football than gets discussed on the net where everyone wants to make definitive statements and label every player or team.

  • PREVIEW: Geelong

"It's officially time for some alarm bells. I'm concerned about the lack of impact from their best players." This comment about one of the teams contesting this Friday night’s game came earlier in the week from a so-called expert radio commentator by the name of Kane Cornes. He wasn’t referring to the Melbourne Football Club but rather, this week’s home side, Geelong. The Cats are purring along with 1 win and 2 defeats and a percentage of 126.2 (courtesy of a big win at GMHBA Stadium in Round 1 vs Fremantle) which is one win more than Melbourne and double the percentage so I guess that, in the case of the Demons, its not just alarm bells, but distress signals. But don’t rely on me. Listen to Cornes who said this week about Melbourne:- “They can’t run. If you can’t run at speed and get out of the contest then you’re in trouble.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit.
Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

For a brief period of time in the early afternoon of yesterday, the Casey Demons occupied top place on the Smithy’s VFL table. This was only made possible by virtue of the fact that the team was the only one in this crazy competition to have played twice and it’s 1½ wins gave it an unassailable lead on the other 20 teams, some of who had yet to play a game.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

In my all-time nightmare game, the team is so ill-disciplined that it concedes its first two goals with the courtesy of not one, but two, fifty metre penalties while opening its own scoring with four behinds in a row and losing a talented youngster with good decision-making skills and a lethal left foot kick, subbed off in the first quarter with what looks like a bad knee injury.
