Martin Flanagan's story in today's Age evokes some great memories of when Melbourne was the alignment partner of the Sandringham Zebras and that team had a very successful run of premierships. It was a lot easier for me personally to head down to the venue rather than to faraway Casey and I miss some of the great characters who used to frequent the place (and posted on Demonland) like jczebra and the Pig.

The Scorpions are due to play there soon and if the roaring wind isn't blowing cold off the bay I might even turn up to see them.

Those were good times to watch when Sandy were winning all those premierships.

They had some gun players like Chad Liddel, Ezra Poyas, Nick Sautner, David Gallagher, Sean O'Keeffe (who is now a teamate and a good friend of mine), Peter Summers as well was a good midfielder.

We also picked up Danny Hughes, Mathew Warnock and Shane Valenti through the Zebras too so you would say our alignment worked well between the two.

Guy Rigoni and Chris Lamb played a big part in the premiership years after they left the Dees as well.

I would always attend big games there in the Golden Era of the VFA . Sandy versus Port or Dandy were always blockbusters and entertaining . I particularly remember such a large crowd on the beach wing that the crush caused a large section of fence to fall flat to the ground . Lord knows how many footballs over the years had to be replaced having been kicked into the tea-tree scrub to the delight of lurking urchins .

You can see why Sandy was so successful in those days. Their VFL affiliated players were strong types and could really play good footy and they had solid support from the MFC contingent. The alignment lasted from 2000 to 2008 and in those nine years, produced four premierships.

Here are the winning grand final teams during the period of the alignment:-

Hard to believe Nick Sautner never played AFL - a goal kicking machine.

I knew his brother who could barely kick a football, which was odd also.

He ( Nick)seemed to dominate for over a decade in VFL .

they were the days when we tried to Win !!!!! & not lose, before finals.

....... a day Pre rotations floods, zones, & way toooo many stats; & congested footy, where players play oorrff one another... & development, was largely up to the players themselves.

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator attended training out at Casey Fields to bring you the following observations from Preseason Training. GATOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS There were 5 in the main rehab group, namely Gawn, Petracca, Fullarton, Woewodin and Lever.  Laurie was running laps by himself, as was Jefferson.  Chandler, as has been reported, had his arm in a sling.  Lindsay did a bit of lap running later on. Some of the ''rehab 5'' participated in non contact drills and b

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan.
