This must be close to a record the Post match discussion thread is still going strong five days after the game ended.

That result sure stirred up some passion.

That's odd OD - last week's result just about [censored] my interest in football for this year.

    OD, assume you mean stirring up strong emotion rather than intense sexual love! Although it would be interesting to spice up Demonland, and maintain the interest of those baby boomers who are over the hill.

    Yes Ernest Passion is a rather scarce commodity these days But looking for it around the MFC team might be not be very productive let alone Demonland. Emotion would have been the better choice.

    Essendon were just as disenchanted last week as we are now.

    As fans, maybe.

    As players, I doubt it.

    IMO another of the many issues to come out of our 'losing culture' is that our players don't get fired up after bad performances like other sides' players do.

    Essendon in the month leading up to the St Kilda game were mediocre at best, but the Saints game exposed all their issues and embarrassed them in front of the AFL. It forced their coaches into dropping consistently poor performers (e.g. Dempsey) but more importantly, the players appear to have responded in the last fortnight (if not in skill, at least in effort).

    With all the losing we do, big losses are just more of the same for our players, and I just don't think our players get fired up after bad performances enough anymore as a result. For any other club last week would have stung, but for us it was just another loss.

    Essendon were terrible in the first half. It was only once they realised they were in the game at half time they started to get some belief.

    We dominated the second quarter but couldn't score.

    I felt like Essendon were playing to their capacity in the first half and we still should have been in front. I wasn't worried until the last ten minutes of the game. They're just a very ordinary football side. I know they had some injuries, but they're not going anywhere over the next few years. We just didn't turn up. That won't be happening in two years time.

    If PJ stays at the helm and the AFL with their finger on the pulse, our fans won't tolerate team insipidness much longer. Most of us are on board for the third rebuild since '07. Not sure many members will be on board for a 4th rebuild, particularly if the great Paul Roos fails. I think we'll be alright though. We will turn the corner soon. It might not be this season, but I'm confident by the time Goodwin takes over, we'll be playing consistent footy.

    Brisbane only have 3 quarters of stamina in them these days.

    Rest assured they'll play a solid 4 quarters tomorrow though.

      Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

      Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
