Round 8: AFL Team of the Week

No one cares about rising star.

James Frawley? 4 kicks 5 handballs, 9 possessions. 35 points ranked # 20 (second last) in Hawthorn's list. They must have been golden possies.

Well done Jesse and Bernie!

Credit where it is due Frawley gave Buddy a bath, don't think he even scored a point. First time since 2009. Hogan was even fan voted as the best forward for the week. McCarthy played well I will admit and is Jesse's main competitor in the rising star IMO but I'm still baffled how Hogan didn't get nominated. I know it doesn't mean much but I would have liked for him to get the recognition for a brilliant game. Congrats to Bernie too absolutely destroyed an opponent most rate higher than him. Living in Adelaide I have seen plenty of him over the years but I don't remember this hardness and tenacity at the Crows, even in his B&F year.

Yes people are kidding themselves about Frawley. Sadly he will have a much easier time of it at Hawthorn, less inside 50s to deal with for a start. He's usually drawn even with Franklin or just lost the contest in a team that gets unceremoniously spanked by Hawthorn every game. This is no surprise with a great team around him. Free Agency is ridiculous to say the very least.

Fair enough comment Demonated but Buddy did gain 46 points. Frawley must have done well but surely there were more impressive defenders out there from all teams at the weekend. I certainly agree with you on Vince. He must surely be A grade at his best.

Didn't watch all the games but he was impressive. As for Vince he is certainly close to an A grade talent his best games are very good. Needs to consistently stay involved as he is also our most damaging mid when on no offence to Jones.

yep. i just watched the replay and fitzy was right up there with the best players. his best game ever. think the backline might be his best position, plus it gives us a second tall when we come against the sides with multiple gorilla forwards

eggzactly ...its clearly flawed otherwise Jesse would win every week!

Interesting point. We know that players have been nominated multiple times, could you be nominated every week?

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
