What about Craig Bird? Not getting a game at Sydney at the moment but has shown in the past that he can be very valuable in that run-with role. Obviously he won't be that 'star' player that we are still crying out for but we also need guys who are capable and able to lead our younger players while they are still developing .

yep...need at least 2-3 ready to go types...solid workers, no need for stars as such We might even develop one ourselves...who knows

I had my fingers crossed for Shiel... dammit. I feel like something is in the works but it might not be someone any of us thought of. Think Vince & Tyson but better. I could list off players I would like (Sloane, Danger, and on and on) but I don't see it being someone obvious, possibly someone still contracted even. I also think we'll pluck someone not getting an opportunity at GWS, GC, or even Sydney.

We should be looking at Essendon. Their players are pretty [censored] off annoyed with some said to be looking to jump ship. Don't know much about their roster but one for certain is Carlisle according to SEN today. I think wee will struggle to attract the top echelon.

trouble is carlisle is part of the 34

and this issue probably won't be decided before this year's draft

given deals are off the table it would be high risk going for one of these 34

Depends what you can get them for. Carlisle is the only one I'd touch though.

Bird could be a good suggestion. Hard nosed and hard working (I think?) player pushed out of a very good midfield. We could do much worse.

agree my friend. we do not have the luxury of nursing a player who has a poor medical history. Gawn is dodgy, Spencer has had his problems, we don't need another one. in today's game, I would always be reluctant to take an injury prone player, recruit or experienced player.

Is Aish any good?

I thought he was probably the best available mid in 2013.This was my long winded report on him at the time. After a good first year at AFL, I still think most of this holds true. Worth noting that he did show that he was able to win his own ball last year:

James Aish – With a combination of ability and exposed form (and perhaps bloodlines), Aish is the best all round midfielder in the 2013 draft pool. His composure and decision making is in the rare category. Aish’s ability to sum up the situation and take the longest amount of time available to pick the right option often creates space for players around him, as well as bringing teammates into the game. He appears to be very unselfish on field, often choosing to set teammates up rather than shoot on goal, and when tagged at the championships, often worked hard to contribute in other areas (1%’s, defensive efforts), which is an extremely positive response and indicates a high level of maturity.

He reads the play very well, which allows him to make good position to take intercept marks The game often looks like it is moving in slow motion when Aish has the ball in hand and his vision and the way he appears to see the field and movement in front of him is reminiscent of an NFL quarterback. Whilst his kick may not be absolutely elite, it’s at a high enough level to capitalise on his decision making capability, and he distributes at an extremely high rate of efficiency. Aish is highly competent on both sides of his body.

He likes to run and carry and will take the game on and initially may be better suited to starting as a creative half back at AFL level. He can win his own ball, but will need to add substantial size to his frame before moving into an ongoing midfield role, and in my opinion is the one major question mark against him. Does he have the body to put on sufficient size to be an AFL midfielder? He certainly won’t ever be a bash and crash inside player, but his composure in traffic and ability to read the ball off hands leads me to believe that he will be able to play that role in the future as his body develops.

Two years of experience and strong performances at SANFL level on the wing for a very successful Norwood side will help his transition, and I can see him playing 10+ games in his first AFL season.
