I think we'll see six go from the main list. Bail, McKenzie, Jamar, M Jones, Terlich and Howe to be traded. Grimes will probably get a one or two year deal on very little cash. At least, that's how I'd play it.

Where does Garland fit in your scheme?

Out of contract and has put off talks till year's end.

Also a restricted free agent.

Really?

Are you thinking Howe?

Call me old fashioned, but I dislike the way folks speak so harshly about their players. We are all blessed or not blessed with differences of intellect, skills, aptitude etc. It may be a supporters site but we should not write with such disdain and contempt about people just because they are footballers and seen as expendable. Sure talk about trades but do we need to be so harsh in our reasons.....no skills, hopeless etc? Would you like to be described in this way?

It is far from restricted to Demonland Ernest

Does not worry me.

They sign up for the big League/ generous pay checks in the entertainment game.

It goes with the Territory.

Just the same to me as Movie stars complaining about losing their privacy.

They take all the Publicity and Money they goes with it until they don't want something in the pubic domain

Then woes is me.

If you don't like the heat don't go in the kitchen

PS Hi old fashioned

Phew! Yes, I was aware he is an OOC RFA this year.

I thought your post said he had put off talks to the end of the year and that worried me.

Well, have you heard the way they talk about us?

"... hopeless sense of composition ..."

"... phrasing is clunky and his posts have little flow ..."

"... don't even realise he was making a simile ..."

"... couldn't spell if he ate a dictionary ..."

Harsh, and quite hurtful if you're one of the targets.

Grimes is contracted until the end of next season.

No of course they wouldn't, they would complain about being attacked personally, you are like me and a bit old fashioned, it says more about modern society unfortunately

We are talking about elite sportsman playing an elite game. They put their hands up for the big dollars, criticism whether it be constructive or not comes with that.

I think you'll find the club is no longer handing out buckets of cash to underperforming players. Some will find this hard to take and look elsewhere.....good luck with that.

I did LH and I am very confident he has.

Sorry to mess you up.

Until otherwise advised i am very confident the above is correct.

Just as well Dawes joined a couple of years ago.

Thanks OD...I wait with baited breath and hope and pray that he stays. Cheers.

He gets a three year deal, IMO.

but does he want one at the MFC?

Yeah, I reckon he will. Particularly, once we've won our 6-8 games.

Bail- Just not skillfull enough

Mckenzie- no skills

Jamar- Time to move on from him

M Jones- Need to play quality kids instead of him

Cross- I'd like another year from him

Terlich- Surely gone barrring contract issues

Can't see Trengove traded. Surely stay on a low wage. He's a fighter and will be back.

Jamar depends imo. if gawn doesn't show anything, then Spencer @ 1, with the Russian as backup for a season. time this season will tell the story. a ruckman has to hurt oppo', physically. just a part of the job.

MJ ?

Crossy, + 1Yr

Terlich ?

Trenners is a must keep, unless his foot fails, & he retires... trade is not the answer for this kid & past captain. respect is the only thing for treating this situation. rookie? & to be kept in footy @ the Demons-fc. if he cannot play we should allow him a pathway into other Footy career areas. Not to be shunted to the scrapheap!!!

no one is writing about people heming, we/they are writing about trades peoples skills, or about professional's skills. about how they ply their trade. call it word of mouth heming.

now having said that; have you ever told someone to stay away from someone else? or advised against a certain mechanic, or against a certain plumber???

if you have, then your treading towards hypocrisy.

the ones I've spoken to, reckon most here don't know anything about footy, & some say 'idiots'. but there ya go... they say the same about the journo's, but no one tells them to pull they're heads in.

We are talking about elite sportsman playing an elite game. They put their hands up for the big dollars, criticism whether it be constructive or not comes with that.

They pay with their knees, their head injuries, their loss of privacy, their curfews and team rules and weekly workplace appraisals, and with the round-the-clock fact of being public targets for every loud-mouth seeking an audience by trashing others. Well and truly earn every cent.

But "supporters", you would think, would be on their side...

When you look at the guys out of contract, there will be 4-6 players most of us would agree will get the chop. The one of most interest to me is Jamar. Four weeks ago, I was lamenting our desperate ruck situation, with an ageing Russian and his protégés barely progressing. When Roos replaced Jamar with Spencer I thought he was having a lend, but full marks to Roos for not waiting until the end of the year to act on the ruck department. While beating the lifeless, fetid corpse of Ayce Cordy might not be a true test of Spencer's mettle, we are at least now making the necessary steps towards the ruck division of the future. Hearing that Gawn and King played well on the weekend is great too. More of that please.

The loser here is Jamar. I like him, he's battled manfully for years now and is the longest-serving player on the list. It'd be hard to be bothered turning up to Casey Fields to play out the rest of your days, but hopefully he gets a farewell game in Round 23 (provided we're not playing for a top 4 spot) and gets to steamroll T Scully on his way out. If we can get continued improvement out of Spencer, Gawn and King, then we should be able to avoid spending valuable assets via trade on a ruckman at season's end.

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • PREGAME: West Coast

The Demons hit the road in Round 8, heading to Perth to face the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium. With momentum building, the Dees will be aiming for a third straight victory to keep their season revival on course. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
