Yeah but at least we know what we are getting.

This is exactly it - AT least Hogan has some exposed form before he gets the big bucks. Boyd had shown pretty much nothing and to date hasn't shown all that much more

The long plane trips every fortnight are robbing the West Australian teams of recruits ,according to Balme on Sen.

Many now think Hogan will stay at Melbourne.

I think he will get the money Dawes is now getting if he recovers his form a bit.

I think he has been solid without being spectacular  - he will get the money irrespective,

NUTBEAN the Dees surely would have a back up plan by now if Hogan wishes to leave when his contract is up.

I would say the back up plan would be 'Freo you give us Lachie Neale and your first pick in 2016 (looking likely to be in the top 5/6).

He will stay and play in multiple flags......

Brenton Sanderson's doing?

Bernie wanted to reject the trade and stay at the Crows until he spoke to the Coach and list manager.

Was told that no matter how well he played in 2014, he wouldn't be offered a contract at Adelaide for 2015.

Bet they're regretting that now!

The Boyd signing was around the notion of generating excitement and hope - nothing wrong with that.

He goes ok Boyd he will prove his worth.

$1m a season is a pretty expensive price tag for notional excitement and hope.

franklin I get, danger and Ablett I get - that much for a player that could be ? Not for me thanks....

We'll never know the real amount of his contract - but that's not the point. The Bullies got a fairly big signing on the back of losing a couple of big names...

I believe he'll come good.

Freo are in a similar boat to where we were early in 2007. Went into the season thinking that at worst we were in the finals mix and then it all went horribly wrong after 1/4 time Round 1.

Freo are in a little better position in that they still have some good young players like Fyfe, Neale & Bennell (although he could be a cancer). But like us in 2007, they wont be able to fully start their rebuild until the end of the year.

Makes for a long season!

Yeah I was thinking of us in 2007. Their fall from grace has been a bit more spectacular though, when I think of 07 I think of all our heartbreaking losses (Port, North, WB), though it was pretty exciting when we eventually won 2 in a row.

Whilst I will comment on the likeness of certain players and  say that Franklin, Ablett and Dangerfield deserve to be paid as the marquee players in the AFL I don't get into debate of actual figures a player does get paid. I made the exception with Boyd because he is now in the top 10 best paid players in the league and it was based on pure potential.

I am not saying that Boyd won't come good but to date he has shown little. As to Hogan, I won't comment on what he should be paid but surely you would agree that he has shown infinitely more than Boyd.

We would be paying Hogan on his upside but we also have some insight as to what we believe he can deliver  he has shown us that in some nice patches. Can you say the same about Boyd ?

Into the 2nd year of the $million a year contract and shown nothing, despite playing in a good side.

19 hours ago, Peter Griffen said:

Sure, but the MFC would clearly be able to pay him the dollars he's worth as well, and allow him to play at the MCG every other week, and not have to fly every second week.

Really? We're not a rich club, and as we know, salary cap doesn't mean squat when clubs do extra deals and jobs.

Am I wrong but didn't Bernie get a little nudge

Yes. But could have chosen a lot of different clubs to end up at.

19 hours ago, ENYAW said:

The way the Dees are playing Hogan is not the focal point, the club realises he may want to go home. Hopefully he chooses to stay and the fact Freo are crap that may encourage him to stay. Another good recruiting round at the end of the year will ensure that we will be finals material. Remaining spuds will be let go.

Que?! Have you seen the triple teams this year?! Jack may be kicking the goals, but Hogan is still the first guy you look for if you're Jack Viney.

He may well come good but to pay big bucks for a name because you missed out on other big names is folly IMO.

We do have a fair idea of the top paid players in the league - tell me that Boyd fits in with them.

As another example of paying for potential - if Cripps of Carlton got into the top echelon of paid players - I would have no problem. you are paying for potential but he also has enough exposed form to warrant paying for that potential.

only 10? sheesh may as well stay at home today then

Interesting reading about Vince at Adelaide. I thought we were paying overs at the time, but I was wrong.

I think they got Matt Crouch with that pick who is a good player, but Vince would be a great addition to their current lineup.

Vince imo is a far better player since joining us than he was at the crows for all but one season, he's aged very well so far.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
