CHANGES 2014 - Retirements, Trades and Delistings

Just thinking about who we have recruited [and are predicted to pick], if they are all fit at round 1, it may be a difficult decision as to who to leave out? [e.g. Where do you play Grimes when you have a backline of Jetta, Dunn, Frost, HL, McDonald and Garland?]. This problem is repeated in both the midfield and the forwardline, with our likely incoming players.

Yes indeed. We made some bold predictions last year envisaging a forward line including Dawes, Clark and Hogan.

To give you an idea of how much the list has been turned over since Bailey's last year 2011. There were 52 players on the list with 48 on the primary list and 7 on the rookie list. There are only 15 players left from 2011. There's been 4 list management periods since then and 37 players are gone plus a few players who have come in and gone since then eg Sellar, Byrnes, Gillies, Rodan, Giorgio, Clisby, Stark. So averaging a turn over of around 11 a season.

The list has to make sense for the season we are in AND building for the future. I understand that having Evans, McKenzie & Spencer on the list may make us look lame, but players like that are not best 22 or even best 28 players. They are on the list for those like-for-like injury occasions. Insurance if you like.

If we get a heap of injuries, Roos does not want to play untried, unready 18 year old rookies and draftees. He wants to players to develop out of the spotlight. He prefers to play people who have training/club/footy experience and developed bodies for his contested ball emphasis - even if they are not the best players. Good strategy I reckon.

Long term they are moved on as others more skilled develop and take their place.
