I wonder if appointing the Paddle Pop Lion means free paddle pops for all?

I do not know either of these men personally, as i do not know Roos personally.

Has any of you been in a coaches box during a game? What about sitting in your office while Liam Jarrah informs you he has been arrested for assult? What about consoling a player that has been suffering for depression and considering retirement?

I'm just happy it is not going to be any of you guys.

Sorry AzzLikA but I don't really get any of the points you are trying to make. You don't have to have had every experience first hand to be able to give advice or have an opinion (if that's what your trying to say).

My point was that none of us know what it takes to be an AFL coach, we are all guessing at what it takes. Yes many have coached at junior levels but that does not compare to the highest level. Just because you have done an apprenticeship under a great coach does not mean you will be a great head coach. I am sure of one thing, none of us truly know what goes on behind closed door of an AFL club so stop pretending you do.

And the spelling mistake in my name, really? How very grown up of you Ethan, bet you were so proud of it.

Brad Scott in The Age on trying to keep Ling:

Quote

"He's probably not grumpy enough yet, but that will come with a bit of experience in the chair," Scott said.

"He's an outstanding person, but he would be the first to admit though that coaching isn't something that ex-players just fall into.

"Coaching is something you have to learn, coaching is a profession.

"You just don't automatically get the right to be a good coach because you've been a good player.

"But in terms of the character traits that good coaches possess, Lingy has most of them."

He has most of them...so what character traits is he missing Brad?

Posted

He can't really come out and say "he's perfect" can he?

But I think Scott alludes to it when he says Ling is not grumpy enough yet.

Fwiw, I think this is a perception that Scott has, but not the reality.

Ling has a hard edge, but he just manages to not have to use it much.

I agree, I have never seen Ling as the sort of bloke to compromise on standards, he knows what sustained success looks like, what it takes to achieve it and I don't think he would take a backwards step on instilling that into a group

Think you might be right here 'Machsy', I think senior coaching can do something to the grump factor...although Roosy seems to keep it behind closed doors.

Mick might have seen the hard edge the other night I'm guessing.

May or may not be accurate...a Geelong radio station I was listening to this morning reported that Ling was set to be announced as the next coach of the MFC.

Highly doubt it

The guy has zero coaching experience

Posted

Would roosy staying on in some capacity cover the lack of experience?

If ling gets the job surely roosy has to stay for the third year?

Posted

Sure have

And ill repeat what I said - hes never coached

...and neither have most of the other names thrown up as likely successors.

I don't have a problem with it. Someone with a good football brain who the players respect and want to listen to and play for is what we need in the next coach, much like Roos now.

Two years under Roos will be adequate time to learn the coaching part.

I didn't hear this but perhaps they meant Ling was set to be announced as another assistant coach at the MFC, thereby making him the next (assistant) coach to be appointed.

Or, of course, they could have been channeling senior journalists at our major daily newspapers and masking opinion as fact.

Possibly, but K Rock definitely stated that " Cameron Ling has met with Melbourne and is set to be announced as the new coach of the Melbourne Football Club"

It was a five second report, only reporting what I heard. No more, no less.

I would be rapt with Ling. It would mean that he'd be serving at least a 2 year apprenticeship under Roos and probably Roos would stay on in a director of coaching capacity.

Ling has all the personal qualities that are needed for success and with the right mentoring would come up to speed quickly. In another 2 years our list and fitness base will be of a high standard and the game palmn well understood.

The sooner all this is put in place the better. Getting rid of uncertainty will be important in the trade period.

I think the thing people underestimate as well is that he has played under two different premiership coaches and in multiple flags and is a premiership captain, he would know quite a lot about coaching already from those experiences, so I don't see it as starting from no idea, he is starting from a very good foundation of quality experience and footy knowledge, he would understand the importance of communication and culture

Roosy will just teach him a bit more about people management and in box coaching, but i'm sure he would have a good and experienced assistant coaching team around him as well to almost blanket any concerns about inexperience.

I haven't seen anyone on this thread post that apparently Ling commented on Channel 7 last night that he had met with Melbourne, including Roos. I heard a grab on radio this morning of Ling himself saying this. I assume it was on "Talking Footy".

If we cast our minds back to other circumstances, Roos, Hird and others have followed a similar pattern of organised information disclosure, that is (1) denial, followed by (2) a comment about how it might be interesting to pursue, (3) followed by I'm seriously interested, (4) followed by I'm considering and talking with my family, (5) followed by an announcement. I think we're at Stage 2.

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/cameron-ling-reveals-he-has-met-with-melbourne-coach-paul-roos-about-potential-role/story-fni5f91a-1226992663878

CAMERON Ling has confirmed he had met with Melbourne coach Paul Roos about a role at the Demons.

Clubs are clamouring to sign Geelong premiership captain Ling, who has distinguished himself in a commentary role since retiring as a player.

“I had a quick coffee with a couple of the Melbourne guys, Roosy included, and threw around what was happening from their end and what was happening at my end,” Ling said on Channel Seven.

Melbourne has floated the prospect of Ling serving an apprenticeship under Roos, and then stepping up to the top job.

Posted

Does anyone believe there is any doubt that Roos will take the 3rd year option.

There is so little likelihood that he would suggest an apprenticeship of 1 year only.

Diplomacy at work.

"Thanks Mick, I'm flattered, but no thanks."

I'd like to believe that too... but I guess there's no way of really knowing until he makes his decision.

Jeez Ethan, you're starting to sound like a hybrid of Ben Hur and Machsy. Perhaps a little less condescending though.
