2013 Player Review - # 42 Jake Spencer

I am biased but I think he has come a long way over the last two years.

IMO right now he is easily the best of our Ruckmen.

He is only 24 which is still young for a Ruckman.

He has some mongrel in him a rare commodity at the MFC.

I expect he will improve again during 2014.

I like my ruckmen to take marks around the ground or play as an extra midfielder, one that can do both consistently would be preferable.

I like Spencer's attitude but he needs to have more impact around the ground.

He has come a way OD ( et others ) but I just dont see quite in him whats needed, in view of our real needs ( but they its only my view ) He tries but..

I fancy Gawn more as our prime rucking prospect going forward.

If Jolly comes on board id retain Russian( as insurance, no high trade value ) and expedite the development of Max in the ruck

I'd test the market now for Spencil's value .

Feel he would do better as 2nd banana say at the giants

Nothing personal..just pragmatism

The posts above provide a good summary of Jake

Pro's

- Best tap ruckman at the club

- Loves the physical stuff, aggressive and shows some mongrel. Not slow for a 203cm

- Shown definite improvement and at 24 entering good ruckman years

- His average of 10 disposals (2 kicks, 8 handball) from 8 games this year compares favourably to Jamars 8 touches a game

Con's

- Doesn't do enough around the ground

- There is a reason why he handballs 80% of the time

- Marking needs to improve

I can understand the argument to test the trade market with Jake but I think he can only get better and, perhaps, in a couple of years time form a fairly fearsome combination with Gawn

I respect his effort and devotion but I just don't think he as what it takes to play at the top level.

Has improved a lot but I wouldn't wait another 3 years just to say if he improves (Morton).

He's come a long way and could go further; sometimes even seems strangely well-coordinated in disposing of the ball. But if Gawn's knee holds out he'll probably overtake Spencer in all aspectsof usefulness by the end of next season. Nevertheless, Spencer must be retained for now as Jamar is fossilising and not likely to play more han about 8 matches, and Jolly if he's brought back is almost over the hill. And there's Gawn's knee... I wouldn't want to see Clark or Fitz in the ruck except as pinch-hitters or deep forward throw-in rucks.

Its a bugger that he copped that suspension this year against the Saints otherwise he would have had a really good run in the AFL.

If Roos can turn Mike Pyke into a footballer it will be very interesting in what he does with Spencer.

Didn't he get a massive rap from Neil Craig at the BnF??

Yes

I thought Jake had a great season, always competes hard and is consistent. I think he will do well under Roos.

He also rarely gets beaten by his man and I think Nate Jones mentioned in an interview that Jake gives the midfield a boost with his competitiveness.
