GWS Salary Cap

Do GWS actually have a salary cap?

If they get Buddy as rumoured and secure Martin as also rumoured they will be paying at least $3.2m per season for at least 4 years, for 3 players, including the ex MFC person.

Throw in Patton and Cameron and they would not have any money left, if they had a salary cap anywhere near the other AFL clubs.

I know they were given an extra amount, but surely they can't fit all these players in.

Are we subject to AFL condoned salary cap cheating or what?

Patton and Cameron wouldn't be on much...yet

Remember Ward, Phil Davis and guess who T Scully got big deals as well. But because they didn't get many older guys they front ended the crap through them.

Also Franklin will get outside the cap money. Which is as you put it AFL condoned salary cap cheating.

But personally I think their list building structure resembles us under Bailey. Too many kids, no culture. Gold Coast seem much more steady. If they get Franklin and Martin it will be a great way for them to end up in trouble down the track I think.

And the salary cap pressure will come in the next 2-4 years. Taylor Adams might leave already and then lets see what happens to Shiel, Tomlinson, Treloar, Whitfield, O'Rourke, Coniglio, Tyson, Haynes, Greene, Liam Sumner, Devon Smith.

Don't care - GWS getting Dustin Martin puts us in the box seat for Tay Adams.

Get onto it Roosy!

In all seriousness, the Giants & Suns have had an amazing advantage in being able to frontload a lot of contracts, but also by virtue of attracting bugger all FA signings in their first year, the majority of Scully, Davis and Ward's contracts would have been paid off out of necessity of frontloading to pay the minimum requirement of the salary cap in their first years.

Remember that rookie contracts are set - you can't pay them overs.

Although, so many would have signed extensions early on in their careers to again boost the amount of the cap GWS are paying now, to give them space for later.

Supposedly they paid $cully $2m of his $6m contract up front, leaving $4m to be paid over the next 5 years.

I would have thought Martin going to GWS would all but meant Adams will be at the Tigers as the GWS list manager already threw up that possibility (Martin for Adams).

Red , I think its an open cheque book up there. Special fund for this, ambassadorships for that. Then theres the "having to play in western sydney" allowance.

AFL learnt from Messendon......."whatever it takes" :rolleyes:

That's my concern. That is why I hope Martin stays with the Tiges.

Salary Caps

On one of those facebook page things ( i know they're not reliable in any way ) it says the hawks have taken their offer off the table for Buddy and are thinking of a future without him,

i personally don't believe this for a second considering it's like 2 nights out from a prelim final,

but still it would seem that GWS might land their man if there is any truth to that rumour.

Just looked at the Author and cringed haha, i suppose most people would have known this was coming though.

Only if there is a trade.

With pick 1 in the PSD, GWS will be angling for that.

No trade.

Buddy offer OFF the table

Also says the offer was rescinded back in July.

I think it's more Hawthorn trying to pressure Franklin for a decision, than a move indicating the hawks are moving on.

PJ will be waiting on the sidelines - check book in hand ooh revenge is sweet!

Maybe that's one way we could get Adams - tell them that they need to spread their list out - they give us Adams for a high pick and they have less future salary problems?

Edited by Young Dee

We don't need to tell them.

GWS & GCS have both been actively seeking to do just that over the last 2 years.

They're all over it.

you dont think the decision already made ? I do

By who?

Franklin?

Probably.

But Hawthorn are still relatively in the dark, and I think they are trying to pressure him to either make or reveal his decision.

I know it's not central to the topic but I couldn't recall what the concessions were, so fwiw here's the list;

2012 - 44-50 senior list, nine rookies with $640,000 - $1m TPP extra allowance;
2013 - 44-50 senior list, nine rookies with $640,000 - $1m TPP extra allowance;
2014 - 44-50 senior list, nine rookies with $640,000 - $1m TPP extra allowance;
2015 - 44-48 senior list, nine rookies with $640k - $880k TPP extra allowance;
2016 - 42-46 senior list, nine rookies with $520k - $760k TPP extra allowance;
2017 - 40-44 senior list, nine rookies with $400k - $640k TPP extra allowance;
2018 - 38-42 senior list, nine rookies with $200k - $520k TPP extra allowance;
2019 - 38 senior list, nine rookies in line with other AFL clubs.

Just look who manages Buddy and consider the history and player-speak of his others. nuff said ;)

The likes of Scully, Ward, Davis, Palmers first year part of their contracts would have been massively front loaded, and I dare say the bulk of their contracts are already paid.

This means they would have a heap of room to attack this off season at BIG targets as the current GWS recruits contracts fall back into line.

Landing both Buddy and Martin is quite a possibility as the AFL would be keen on them making big inroads in a competitive sense.

Liamee alone !!!

is the "living in sydney expenses" on top of that?

  • REPORT: Carlton

    I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

    The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

    A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
