We have to go after Buddy

You have no idea what you're talking about.

Says the guy who thinks we should sign the most expensive forward in the league to go with our 3 other key forwards and rubbish midfield...

Did you read how I think we should use him, or was that too much for your gif-clogged brain to handle?

Hmmmm as a "Gary Ablett level midfielder" for "entire games".... Does that ring a bell mate?

completely stupid idea, no offence

1.5 million = 3 of the best young midfielders in the land

Prestia

Shiels

?

plus pick 1 or 2

add Toumpas, Viney, Jones, Jones, a fit Trengove and Grimes and we're on out way

Way to highjack a thread.

Next time try arguing who has the biggest ego out via PMs, cause frankly, I reckon most folks on here don't give a continental.

Don't get the Prestia and Shiel love around here. Toby Greene looks a much better prospect to me. I don't know his contract situation though. Either way, I'd be going with more mature mids anyway.

Dal Santo? Couldn't hurt to have someone like him for a couple of years while our younger guys develop - he seems to still be playing to a high standard this year. Would love to get Prestia as well and throw some money at eithe Shiel or another developed midfielder too.

Edit: pretty sure Greene signed on for a few more years earlier this season.

Would you go after Delsanto over a doer & goalkicker in Lecras? one is a bit of a downhiller?

Is Toby Greene openminded to coming to Victoria? I think Prestia might be?

NO we dont need to chase him.

We need MIDS, MIDS, MIDS. I thought that was pretty obivious.

Lance Franklin won't come to the MFC even if we pay him 2 million bucks a year but having said that I think people are being a little harsh on the OP. If Franklin was a genuine chance of moving to us (as I said unrealistic to my mind) we'd be crazy to overlook him because of list balance reasons. We are at such a low ebb. If a star of the competition is prepared to come to the current joke of the competition you take him. Structurally we'd obviously have to make changes. Clark could move into the first ruck position (where he made the All Australian squad) and be dangerous when resting forward. Dawes could play deep and Hogan at CHF and Buddy could have complete license to roam the forward line pushing up to the wing as he regularly does now. With Howe floating around we'd have the most exciting forward line of the past 50 years. What Franklin would bring is excitement, renewed enthusiasm, membership, sponsorship and other players. If Franklin announced he was coming here how much easier would it be to convince an Eddie Betts to come and rove off the likes of Franklin, Dawes, Clark and Hogan? How much easier would it be to convince Deon Prestia to come back to Victoria? Snaring Buddy wouldn't necessarily mean we could attract another midfielder or even two. The trickle on effect from Buddy signing could be incredible. Of course the midfield is our weakness but you don't turn your back on one of the biggest names in the competition if you get the opportunity.

The fact that we offered David McKay nearly half a million a year...

Prb will again this year

nah mate, got Dawes, Clark and Hogan.

We got enough. Just gotta get players who can get the ball down to them, and get the ball down to them with decent kicks.

Buddy isn't the answer to our woes, believe me.

Do we still have Howe ??? I agree .."nah" to Buddy.. We don't need to spend big money on Franklin ....WE must spend on a proven midfielder ....or TWO

Yahhhp. But i didn't mention him as he is so versatile he can play either ends of the ground! Shaping up to be a very very important player for the MFC.

This thread still give me a laugh :)

Lance Franklin could be a Gary Ablett level midfielder if he played entire games there.

PS Stop it with the bloody gifs!

I will say that the area where we fall down hard is in our deliveries into about 60-40 metres from goal. Whether that's because of our forwards or our mids I'm not sure (largely because our real forward line has yet to play this year), but either way getting Franklin would allow us to shift our players so that either he or Clark could play the role of high half-forward who gives us that all-important kick inside 50.

I'm for it.

Logic ????? If we are getting the ball "into about 60-40 metres from goal" following your theory.... we are OBVIOUSLY falling down on our forward aren't we ??? That indicates the midfield are getting the ball onto the forward line , which is a long way from what is REALLY happening... We are NOT getting the ball out of the centre most times.... MIDFIELD PROBLEM I would say !!

I certainly wouldn't say no to Dal Santo, but in my mind he's slightly more outside these days and less of an inside mid. It's less likely, but I'd much prefer Sam Mitchell or Brad Sewell. My thoughts at the end of last year haven't really changed. Their procurement might become slightly more realistic if Clarkson becomes available at season's end. ;)

Pity about Greene. Treloar is the other one I'd look at from GWS. Such a smooth mover.

I see where you're coming from, goodvibes. I'd agree in essence that it'd be unwise to turn down one of the biggest names in the comp, as he would generate revenue across the board. His defection might also convince a number of kids to defect to Melbourne too, to follow their idol. That said, as you've noted, midfielders are important. If we could sign two mids - an A grade star and a B grade ball winner, then I'd say Buddy becomes a bit of a no brainer. But the fact remains that we must fix the midfield first, before we look to any other area of the ground.

It's easy to bomb the ball into the forward 50. It's a lot harder to pinpoint a pass into that space. Part of that is because our fowards don't know how to lead, and part of it is because our mids don't have the footskills or the vision to hit up our forwards. Of course another big part is that we're often just handing the ball over straight from the centre bounce.

It's not a simple problem. Guys like Sylvia can often win the ball in a centre bounce, but then they might waste it by kicking it over the heads of our forwards. Chris Dawes might know what I'm talking about here.

Play buddy in the middle simple

More simple, don't pay a bloke 1.5 million dollars a year at least when we don't even know for sure he'd be a good mid? haha

1.5 would get us 2-3 very good quality mids.
