Arguably the best small forward in the game.

He is a FA end of this year and is only 26, with Davey most likely calling it a day at the end of this season I think that we should make a play for him.

He would fill a gaping hole and would give us one of the most dangerous forward lines in the game with Hogan, Dawes, Clark, Betts with some of our quick mids resting.

Even if we don't get him we can force Carlton to pay overs, make them regret paying Mclean what they do.

We should be speaking to every free agents manager.

We must make Free Agency work for us. Otherwise we wil just not be able to rise up the ladder ever...

We did well last year so I am sure we ll do well again. We don't have much to lose and alot to gain this year really.

We should also try to leverage a trade using Sylvia.

What I'm concerned about here is that we start to see an MFC trend where we play it safe and buy the Audi when we could've risked more and plumped for the Merc.

Dawes instead of Cloke

Betts instead of Rioli

It's risk versus reward. And there are occasions when you've got to throw caution to the wind and push all your chips forward.

This club has no stars. None.

Personally I rate Betts higher then Rioli, he gets more goals and has less injuries.

They'll ruin Rioli if they continue to try and play him up the field, same as we did with Flash

Clark?

Jordan Lewis - much needed aggression/attitude.

LeCras - get him.

Betts is a better prospect than Rioli.

Cyril is a freak but spends to much time in the stands to pay absolute top dollar for.

Betts is far more resilient.

And will be cheaper, is a Free agent and fills a hole in our list. I dont see rioli as fililng a gap as he will just be another mid/forward which we already have plenty of (Sylvia, Blease, Howe, Kent, Tapscott, Davey, Toumpas ect)

I like your thinking. It's hard to believe his only 26?

Lewis just re-signed with the Hawks

Betts can put on forward pressure but I haven't seen him do it for a full season, he seems more of a lead and goal type player. He'd be handy but I can't see him leaving Carlton and still being a good price.

I'd look to the draft more than anything for a small forward. They can come in and play quickly if fit.

I agree its an area of need for our list.

Milne is the best small forward in the game, followed by Le Cras, Betts may be third

Why is there a gaping hole, have we seen the full forward line play together yet or have I missed something

Betts has been brought up in at least another 3 topics so far this year

Can we see how 2013 pans out, I am sure the FD have got this under control

Lewis just re-signed with the Hawks

Oh well - LeCras is my preference.

1. I said arguably the best which meant it depends how you interpret it. Betts would be better in a sence that he has more years ahead of him and more to deliver in the future then Milne.

2. You would need to be blind freddy to see that we are not desperate for a good small forward.

3. Cool

4. Feel free to see how 2013 pans out, nobody is forcing you to read/post on these threads.

I like to read the posts, it keeps me grounded

Let me see have we played a proper game yet this year, er no, have we seen who is going to sit in the so called small fwd possie in the 'best 22' for the first game er no. are we going to play a small fwd....not sure, we may go all tall...who knows.....am I allowed to express my thoughts...er yes

I'm sorry but Cyril Rioli is so far away from being "just another mid/forward'. The guy is on a different planet to everyone on our list.

He is the best 'frontal pressure' player in the game. He causes defenders to fumble and turnover the footy by his mere presence alone. His freakish vision brings teammates into the game and he often doesn't need to kick goals himself - he creates them through deft tap-ons and perfect body positioning.

People read too much into stats. I want a player who breaks games open. Unless you have one already on your list, for that type of player ... you must pay.

Premiership quality mid/forward named on the All-Australian Half-Forward Flank for 2012. Set to enter his prime. That'll do me, thanks.

Good argument but end of the day I don't think he would be as bang-for-buck as Eddie.

I remember Carlton were asking their players to take pay-cuts last year so they could try get Cloke. The more pressure put on them financially the better.

Betts would be a great get. He puts pressure on the defence, he creates and makes the most of opportunities, and most importantly he kicks bags of goals. You could rely on him to kick 40-50 goals a year crumbling for the talks we have up forward in Clark, Dawes and Hogan. He'd make our forward line very potent and have 5-6 years left in him.

Comparing him to Cyril is a bit different. Firstly I don't believe Cyril is a free agent? Secondly Betts is a better forward IMO. He kicks a lot more goals than Cyril, and at the end of the day i'd take someone kicking his 2-3 every game than someone kicking a freakish goal one week then not kicking a goal for 2 weeks. Cyril is capable of more brilliance, and is more versatile, but he is injury prone and inconsistent. Cyril is more capable of pushing up the ground and taking a game apart, but he's honestly a bit like Sylvia in this regard. He's very inconsistent and is one of the most over-hyped and over-rated players in the game at present. How he got an AA place last year absolutely blew my mind. Shouldn't have even made the squad! He is very talented though, just inconsistent and injury prone.

Betts would be the best value out of the small forward free agents, and it is a spot we need to fill.

Can't see Milne having a positive effect on our culture. Le Cras would be my pick out of those 3, if he was in a Vic team he would get even more attention and be classed a no-doubt superstar.

Yeah lets pay Millions for a guy thats just done an ACL, Betts all day long, you have limited knowledge of AFL Stuie.

Haha who said anything about paying millions? Yeah let's just pass on a superstar cos he's coming back from an injury 18 months before we'd go after him...

They're both the same age, but Betts has been the sole true forward option for a decent performing team and Le Cras for a very poor but then very good team. In their last 3 seasons Betts has kicked 150, Le Cras has kicked 168. As a crumbing forward i don't think the ACL he's coming back from (after having the full operation and recovery, no short cuts) will hinder him like it would a high leaping big forward. If you look at their output there's not a huge difference, so to bag someone's footy knowledge for edging out Le Cras over Betts is stupidity, which is your usual standard.

  • PREVIEW: Geelong

"It's officially time for some alarm bells. I'm concerned about the lack of impact from their best players." This comment about one of the teams contesting this Friday night’s game came earlier in the week from a so-called expert radio commentator by the name of Kane Cornes. He wasn’t referring to the Melbourne Football Club but rather, this week’s home side, Geelong. The Cats are purring along with 1 win and 2 defeats and a percentage of 126.2 (courtesy of a big win at GMHBA Stadium in Round 1 vs Fremantle) which is one win more than Melbourne and double the percentage so I guess that, in the case of the Demons, its not just alarm bells, but distress signals. But don’t rely on me. Listen to Cornes who said this week about Melbourne:- “They can’t run. If you can’t run at speed and get out of the contest then you’re in trouble.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit.
Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

For a brief period of time in the early afternoon of yesterday, the Casey Demons occupied top place on the Smithy’s VFL table. This was only made possible by virtue of the fact that the team was the only one in this crazy competition to have played twice and it’s 1½ wins gave it an unassailable lead on the other 20 teams, some of who had yet to play a game.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

In my all-time nightmare game, the team is so ill-disciplined that it concedes its first two goals with the courtesy of not one, but two, fifty metre penalties while opening its own scoring with four behinds in a row and losing a talented youngster with good decision-making skills and a lethal left foot kick, subbed off in the first quarter with what looks like a bad knee injury.
