As reported in The Australian

Apart from Caddy and Jolly, the two names on the Suns' lips were Maverick Weller and Josh Toy. The out-of-contract pair appear in the Suns' sights as the Gold Coast looks to reduce its roster to 39 by October 31 to make room for its draft picks.

Josh Fraser's retirement and Nathan Krakouer's departure ensure five players must go and Ashcroft admitted Toy and Weller faced "nervous waits".

Maverick Weller was one of the 17 yo preference picks by the Suns. Very very highly rated junior, from Burnie in Tassie. Hard at the footy, good pace and skills. I think we can grab a good one here. He is out of contract after two years. I rate him in the same class as Tom Scully.

You had me up to, "I rate him in the same class as Tom Scully."

I also think it's important that we take a stand and refuse to draft or recruit kids with stupid names.

take him on the name alone

I'm with you - no idea if he can play but damn gotta love anyone called Maverick Weller

Anyone seen him play. He's slow and turns it over. Not interested. Toy has had a spectacular fall from grace since been touted as a top 3 draft pick, but I'd prefer him on potential alone. He had amazing skills as a junior it just seems he can't compete physically at AFL level yet (or maybe at all).

"Apparently" around 5 clubs have shown interest for him and trades are being considered... (Source: FB page "AFL trades, delistings, and other info

Would/should we be one of those clubs? Tough, fit, tackling 20 yo midfielder. Don't know how quick he is though, thoughts?

He has a 'Top Gun' tattoo on his arm. Can you get into the MCC looking like that?

Also, I'm intrigued: how does one become a maverick weller?

Sorry, this adds nothing to the thread. He hasn't done much yet, so recruiting him would be purely speculative. He wasn't memorable in the few games he's played against the Dees.

I know we are off the T$ bandwagon, but to say he is better than Scully is a bit much.

MEMO TO MFC: GO HARD TO GET WELLER

I rate him very highly. Great ability to get the footy. 3-year, $350k a year contract. Solid build. At 20 yo, he is as good if not better than Scully.

Are you the poster formerly known as Rassilon?

i think that Weller would be a good pickup.

I cant even understand why he isnt getting a game at Gold Coast.

Hopefully we pick him up.. id be really pleased.

maybe Martin for weller

One of the clubs that his manager said was interested, Hawthorn, said they know nothing about it and didn't even know who his manager was. Wonder if it's Beamer's manager?

2024 Player Reviews: #36 Kysaiah Pickett

The Demons’ aggressive small forward who kicks goals and defends the Demons’ ball in the forward arc. When he’s on song, he’s unstoppable but he did blot his copybook with a three week suspension in the final round. 2024 Player Reviews: #1 Steven May

The years are rolling by but May continued to be rock solid in a key defensive position despite some injury concerns. He showed great resilience in coming back from a nasty rib injury and is expected to continue in that role for another couple of seasons. It was another strong season from McVee who spent most of his time mainly at half back but he also looked at home on a few occasions when he was moved into the midfield.
