All the clubs get lots of money from the AFL and always will. Us being a "charity case" is one of the biggest misnomers in the wider community.

Given we lost our major multi-million dollar sponsor, and our membership count is soft, that is a very impressive result.

And as Nasher said, even Collingwood and West Coast and Adelaide get cash handouts from the AFL. We are not a charity case and we are not living off these handouts, we are simply getting what everyone else is, but adjusted higher because unlike the above mentioned club we don't get as many blockbusters, or home games.

It's not even that, we get less from the AFL than some of the big clubs. From the 2010 AFL report (page 58):

The base payment to all the clubs was the same, then there's an "other" payments thing and the total. The clubs that got more payments from the AFL than us in 2010 were: Carlton, Collingwood, North Melbourne, St. Kilda and Western Bulldogs. Am very tired of us and others being whipping boys whilst at same time other clubs are happy to garner funds from all sorts of State grants ...cough Eddie...cough .or Sweetheart deals...cough Jeff cough.

To be fair though, beyond the base those payments were for a range of things, including ground buyout agreements, distribution of signage rights, prizemoney, travel subsidies and promotional funding to help clubs develop the game. You can't tell from the total why they got them. Collingwood didn't get any special distribution funds (we did, Carlton did) and their figure includes the $500,000 they got for winning the premiership (the players shared another $500,000).

I know there are plenty of people continually calling for schwabs head on this forum but you have to give credit where its due, to keep the club in the black this year after everything thats occurred would be a fantastic result. Past mfc administrations have continually lost $millions in poor years and were forever playing catch up and fighting debt going into the next year, which has limted investment where it counts, the football department. Ultimately we all know all that really matters is how big the number is in the wins column but it is great that in the off season we will know that this financial stability will allow us to leave no stone unturned in hunting those wins in the future. Was just about to post the same thing. We have significantly increased our football department expenditure, along with all the off field issues, and we are still tracking in the black. I struggle to see why on earth you would sack somebody in this situation. I think it is ridiculous to think that Cameron is at fault for our poor skills out of the back line and our inability to spread dangerously from the midfield. It's not an easy gig being CEO of Melbourne, a lot tougher than some of the other clubs around town, and I think Cameron is doing a good job.

To me a club should only make small profits. All money generated should be pumped back into the club to hopefully make it a better club. When our figures are published it will show an increase in revenue and and increase in expenses mainly with money being put into our football department, this is where money needs to go, the better we become the more revenue we will generate. We start winning games we get bigger attendances, Better financial fixtures, higher membership, more free to air games which results in higher returns from sponsers.

On the AFL hand outs, this is to balance the draw, this year we get home games against Brisbane, Western Bulldogs, St Kilda, Collingwood, GWS, Fremantle, Port, Adelaide, Richmond, Gold Coast, Hawthorn, to me that draw is a financila disaster 6 of our 11 home games against interstate clubs 2 against smaller Vic based clubs.

Dr drake, I agree at this stage in our cycle we should only run a small profit. However when we do start winning games and playing finals, it would be nice to set aside some profit to invest in long term assets. If we had a larger and stronger balance sheet it would serve to provide some security for the club next time we go through tough financial times. Build up an asset base in the good times, so the option is there to sell down some assets in a tough financial period.

There's a way we could all help to increase the size of the Club's profit this year.

High membership numbers make a club strong. If every member spent $50 to buy a Little Devils membership for a toddler they know we could reach the 50,000 members that the Tigers achieved yesterday.

It doesn't matter if they grow up to follow another club but let's surpass the 40,000 members that Jim wanted this year. $50 isn't much these day.

I was phoned by someone representing the Club the other day asking me to buy a $200 raffle ticket. I told her I'd rather buy 4 $50 memberships. We can do it!

^Yep agree with the above, the AFL doesnt help us with our draw, giving us home games against GWS and Gold Coast at the G. Home games against Collingwood, Richmond and Hawthorn are good, but i`d like to play home games against Essendon or Carlton more often. Then again through winning more games, the bigger our crowds get.

I always thought the raffle was something initiated by the MCC through the club? Club might also not have the resources to initiate a membership drive and address those requests and queries right in the middle of the season. I mean, if it's not already doing it, there must be a reason, right?
