If I’m playing on Saturday and someone tells me they are going to rape my mum, I punch them in the face and an all in brawl follows. End of situation.

This happens in AFL and there are fines, suspensions, unhappy sponsors, unhappy members, an unhappy board, media reports followed by an investigation etc.

These blokes are not down the local club anymore, they professional athletes, competing in a multi-million dollar highly professional environment. What was said was unacceptable in the AFL and the punishment deserved.

If you don't like it head down to your local ground and be as derogatory as you like, be warned though, you might end up with a sore face.

As for the suspension, what a [censored] joke. I'm sure every team would have players that say that sort of stuff every week. Heck i'm sure i've said stuff worse then that on the field and to my mates in regular conversation.

What I am saying is that there is a reason that derogatory language toward women is now outlawed. And it isn't just because 47% of AFL fans are women.

I believe that claiming to rape someone close to the player is beyond sledging, and it's a distinction I would make in the rules.

It is, mate. Anyone who thinks this is anything more than a game is kidding themselves. I love footy and the MFC as much as anyone else on here, but seriously, the AFL are the moral police?

I do play amateur and don't say things like that. I do come out with the odd sledge and definitely stand up for myself and teammates when I need to. But if someone says something like this to me I do not punch them in the face. I laugh and show them that calling me names or trying to put me off my game won't work. Sure, there will be a time and a place to get some revenge, but I'd rather help my team win the game and hang [censored] on the player later.

I keep saying it, but when the AFL has specific educational programs to promote the correct way to treat women, and a player clearly does the opposite to what they are being told to do, then what is the issue? The league's name is mud when there are cases like Milne & Montagna, Andrew Lovett, even the St Kilda School Girl incidents, so as a result, they have programs in place to try and ensure it doesn't tarnish the brand.

It also has nothing to do with political correctness, over-policing of the AFL, people being too precious, Victoria being a nanna state, sledging to put your opponent off, IT IS ABOUT RESPECT. To say it once is moronic, disrespectful and totally inappropriate in any situation or scenario, but the fact that this bloke said it twice, TWICE!!!

And Guy Rigoni - you're sure every team would have players that say that stuff every week? Are you really sure that would be the case? Really? Let's be serious now. Go and have a chat with Mark Jamar, tell him you think it's acceptable to say that on a footy field and see if he agrees.

I don't understand the question? Maybe phrase it in another way and I will try to answer it.

In the meantime, I have a question:

How is directly threatening to travel interstate to kill someone (the person you are speaking to) any more or less of a big deal than threatening to rape someone's mother (the mother of the person you are speaking to)?

I do not regard any form of threat as "sledging". A threat of violence is one of the places where the line should be drawn.

This incident with Petterd and McGinnity is of the same ilk. He has threatened violence to Petterd's mother. Inappropriate conduct. Investigation and penalties warranted.

Sledging needs to keep clear of violence in any form.

I went through 12 years of school with a disability so i can vouch for getting a tough time....I just think society needs to Harden up. But that is my opinion.

As a kid if i came off my bike in the street and cut my knee i would ride home, get a Band Aid and some Mychurecrome?? (That Red Stuff!!) and get back on my bike.

Now if the same thing happens the council gets sued for a dangerous piece of Pavement...!!!

In the '70's, we started down this depraved path, & thought it funny. Not realising just how far things would stretch.

The game has gotten soft, that we can't 'clean up' these types anymore.

A bit dis-appointing Petterds pointed out MgGinnity to the umpire IMO.

I had 1st thought the umpire had overheard it, but the vision shows Ricky making a big deal out of it.

Andy Maher said on SEN this morning that the umpire and another WCE player heard the remark and he got it from Sam Lane that the remark was "I'll take your mum back to West Coast and r_pe her" Now I have never heard a funny joke or a sledge about someone being raped. as far as I'm concerned this sort of comment has no place on the football field or society.

An A grade sledge is that of Steve Johnson when he asked Campbell Brown cash or credit?
