Tom Scully

Couldn't agree more. Not fussed if Tom stays or goes,(hope he stays)definitely not worth the money offered by both factions.

If however we overpaid Tom and failed to keep Trengove or Watts,i'd cry myself to sleep every night and give the game away. After following this club for 50+ years without success, sometimes it is about certain players. If it isn't why bother at all, aside a flag.

I know the MFC is the closest it has been since 1964 to the ultimate prize.I just hope the stars align and we luck out before we are killed with rule changes and the AFL squandering $$$ on favourite love childs.

This is also my main concern with the Scully situation. We need to keep the majority of our star kids to win the premiership and I dont want to pay above the odds on any one of them.

19 year old copping a tight Kane Cornes tag... jeezus this site frustrates me sometimes.

Get a clue.

Anyone who can't see he's going to be a future star must be blind or have no ability to identify talent and star quality

I don't think anyone's suggesting he's not going to be a very good player (in due course). But $5M over 5 years?! Midfielders in that echelon deal with hard tags week in, week out.

I'd rather take Judd on those terms.

In fact, I'd rather get two first rounders and distribute the excess cap to the other talented kids on our list who are desperate to play out their careers at this club.

TS already has a third party agreement possible two and I think a few players and north have them always so I think you might be wrong on that point.

Fair enough I was just going by the Herald Sun article from last year which was probably based on 2009 figures.

Tom looked flat last night. A few errors didn't help. If his name was Maric though there would have been bloodlust calls for his dropping.

From here......

Maturing Demons More Composed

"Bailey said midfielder Tom Scully would be monitored this week after being subbed off with a sore knee in the third quarter but didn't think it was a serious complaint.

"He just landed awkwardly on his knee and we were talking about who could be the sub, and the medical advice was that he's come off and we need to check him and it might take five to 10 minutes," he said.

"So we subbed him. We'll see how he is in the next 24-48 hours but hopefully it's nothing more than a bruised knee."

If he has ongoing knee problems then good luck to GWS trying to build a team around him.

I did the same injury Scully did almost two years ago and thus far I have only regressed.

Hope it's nothing too serious though and hopefully not the same knee! Poor kid.

Yeah because I said all that. I stated a fact, he was in the top 3 worst on today, was a pig of a game.

Dumb handballs, sloppy frees, easily beaten by Kane who is having a very down year.

I am happy for Tom to put off talks to concentrate on footy, you might wanna play some good footy in the process though.

Sure he's going to be a very good player, but the more I see the more I question how high his star will rise.

Trengove is bonafide already, the media should be all over how good this kid is, instead we get what will Tom do? and G Lyon over exaggerating Scully running clips.

I'm a Scully fan (and his courage should be shown on repeat to some of the softies we have), but I believe he is overrated to date, and will call a shocker when I see one.

Spot on. Well said.

I think he'll stay but very worried about his knee, the kid would be desperate to play the rest of the season for obvious reasons but this is a concern

Whilst I believe that Tom is genuine in his comments that he hasn't agreed to terms with GWS, or signed anything, I also don't believe that the on-going uncertainty around his situation is helping him, or the club. If he genuinely expects to stay I'd be surprised if he doesn't bring contract talks with the MFC forward. He now has both entities best offers. The notion that he needs to concentrate on his footy before addressing the issue isn't overly plausible. No matter how focussed an individual this cloud hanging over him is the very obstacle preventing a clear mind and a pressure free environment that's conducive to best performance. He'd also be aware that his situation is an imposition to his teammates.

I've always been confident that he'll stay and I certainly believe every word he's uttered about the matter, but I also think that if he hasn't agreed to terms before round 24 the odds of him remaining with the club diminish. I'm aware that plenty of players wait til after the season to agree to terms, but they're not in Scully's situation and they usually wouldn't have had a best offer put to them two thirds of the way through the season. Especially when it's an offer that by any measure greatly exceeds the players present output.

The only logical explanation that may prevent him signing before the end of the season is that he expects to go, or that he's waiting to see who's coaching Melbourne next year. I really can't see him putting the club, the supporters, his teammates all through this experience to turn around and then say, "fine. I'd love to continue with the MFC". I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but it just doesn't quite make sense to me.

I'm confused. Scully was tagged tonight but still did some amazing things. put his body on the line time and time again last night. And just because he didn't get much of the footy ( despite being blanketed by a seasoned tagger) people all of a sudden don't think he will be a star? Tom Scully will be a star and everything he does suggests that. There is a reason Scully will always get the number 1 tag before Trengove. Think about that. All of the opposition clubs think that too.

And if we are going to point the finger and suggest that Watts is the one that is worth the 'Scully money' then i'm guessing you didn't watch last nights game. He was hopeless. Needed a bucket to pick up the ball and got faked out by several players. looked like Morton Take 2 out there.

If he is holding back to see who will coach us next season is a red herring planted by his manager to hold back the inevitable. Tom has never said this. The only way this proposition is probable is if Tom has a sour relationship with Dean and is wanting him to go. But not likely. Despite your trust in him your doubts are well founded.

But he doesn't know what the GWS offer is because Peter Blucher said he he doesn't want to know until after the season. He's too focussed on this season and too busy training.

There's your 'logical explanation' right there.

So no need to worry. The player manager has spoken!

Would've done better without him tonight, apart from the courage, he was rubbish.

Trengove is a class above.

I agree that he struggled today given what we expect from him...

But if hadn't played who would of got the heavy tag..... maybe Trengove???

Here's a novel idea: we should tank.

Say we lose Scully and get one first round pick, with that pick slated to come after our normal pick.

We use the pick in 2012.

We tank and come last and we get picks 1 & 2 in 2012.

-----------

Say we lose Scully and get two first round picks, with those two picks slated to come after our normal pick.

We use the first pick in 2012 and the second in 2013.

We tank and come last in both years we get picks 1 & 2 in both 2012 and 2013.

-----------

Having said that, can I just say (or rather, ask) this: how would the two picks be allocated? How did it work for Geelong & Ablett? I assume one pick came straight after Geelong's regulation pick. When is their other pick scheduled to kick in?

agree. i think there is only one outcome if he leaves it until after the season to sign, despite many here trying to convince themselves otherwise.

End of first round.

End of first round.

Thanks, DA.

Perhaps you, or anyone, could also tell me about priority. Who goes first when there are multiple compensation picks to be used over the next few years? For instance, if both Melbourne & Geelong choose to use their "end of first round" pick in 2013, who gets first pick?

Spot on there . Think about it people, were they at the g in there normal rooms/ surrounds? No. Sang the song in the fridge cos they are stuffed and scully not there. simple.

I think the question is valid and one i asked at the time ... Where was he??? No it doesnt mean he is going to GWS but fridge or no fridge he should have been there!

With potentially this sort of individual attitude and questions over his knee (long bow) ... I wonder if he is worth the $, energy and team morale that is being impacted!

I'm amazed at how anyone could be so sure that 'he should have been there'. Obviously you have more facts available than I do, eg. how many metres between the cool room and the room where TS was being treated? Was it possible to interrupt the treatment underway and get there in time? Would the docs know when the siren was going to sound to get him off the table on on the way to the cool room in time? I'd want top know all that before I even thought of saying 'should have been there'. And as for taking the next step to draw conclusions about implications for contract signing - just amazed anyone would do it.

The manager, Blucher has said that the decision will be made shortly after the home and aways. He has also inferred in the same interview that the decision may be based on who is coaching next season. Now everyone knows that the coaching decision would not be made that quickly (esp with MM as a possibility) so there is a lack of plain-speak here.

End of first round.

That's not what Geelong got for Ablett. They got:

- 1st rounder after their pick

- 1st rounder after all non-finals teams, i.e. pick 11 in an 18 teams competition if there's no other special picks like priority picks or compensation picks before it.

If 2 clubs have the same pick level e.g. Melbourne and Geelong, then I assume the lower finishing club would pick first.

Not his best game by any stretch, but "better with out him" is massively overstating it. Extremely unfair.

Agree

Thanks, DA.

I don't know but at a guess I'd say whoever finished lower on the ladder would get first pick. So say we finish 6th next year and Geelong finish 3rd our pick would come before there's.

That's just a guess though so couldn't say for certain but you could probably get an idea by looking at last year's draft order.

Did they? Fair enough I thought it was one after their first round pick and one at the end of first round. I'll defer to your better judgment though.

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.
