I didn't attend the footy today nor did I even think about it until about 6.00 pm this evening. Today I had the privilege of attending a "special olympics" swimming carnival. Most of the competitors were Down Syndrome the the others had ID's of various types.

The highlight for me was a 50 metre race where 3 0f the competitors had finished and the fourth was about 3/4 of a pool length behind. The crowd cheered the last person on and, as she came near the finish, the other three who were still in the water began to clap.

I am a hard hearted [censored] but this made me cry. Actually writing about it now is making me cry.

It puts life in perspective.

You are a big softy bbo in more than just girth.

Good to see this thread taking on a more enjoyable and sharp direction.

A bit more red-blooded spirit would be a lot better ...

Actually don't think we lack spirit R and B.

The lack of skill is our problem.

It is difficult to pull your socks up if you do not have any on.

True, OD. But one of the constant frustrations of being a Dees supporter is seeing the difference between the best and the worst of the current list. Some will struggle to make it at AFL level, but if they all put in to the best of their ability each week, whatever that is, then .... well, that would be different ...

Something in me tells me that a sash is not a good look right now ... perhaps just playing like demons would be best.

You want us to play that badly?

See below, Perth's nickname is also the Demons.

Surely we can do so much better?

Perth is 8th on a 9 team ladder.

They not won their last flag in the late 70's and I don't think they played in a Grand final since that time.

(Sorry the table did not save)

Only one of them would be any good in the wet, and that one can't kick ...

I look at that photo of Jones and wonder why we played in that crap from the weekend

It makes the whiter one look positively terrific.

As they clearly show protential give the the Cows a 2 year $1,000,000 contact and its see if they can play footy.

Probably do well at clearances, and great at shepherding, but will struggle on the lead and not strong overhead. A real bugger to shift from the bottom of the pack, though ...

I see your point, but I was thinking more of the demented ape-[censored] crazy desperate fiend ... bringing a bit of hellfire and brimstone would be a welcome change!

Then he should be worth $10,000,000 over the next 9 years.

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • PREGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
