GWS got the first half dozen picks in the Rookie draft last year.

I'd be surprised if they got the same again this year.

You are right I was wrong.

3. 2010 NAB Rookie Draft:

GWS Giants to have Selections 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8.

4. 2011 NAB Rookie Draft:

GWS Giants to alternate NSW priority selections with the Sydney Swans. GWS Giants to have first selection.

Dreamy Scenario

Imagine you were the a senior official at Melbourne back in February and learnt that HWSNBN and GWS were a "done deal". Apart from all the hysteria and media storm, what would you strategically contemplate doing as a club in the period of Feb-April ?- knowing that we'll most likely receive compensation at the end of the year. What input plan might you consider hatching as a way of striking back ?

Personally, I'd try and target and coerce a player of interest, a star from another club, youngish. Perhaps, a star player who will be out of contract having recently signed on for just 1 year, from the same team whose President announced the "Tom Tom's are beating".

One who also recently announced, "this is not Melbourne where you can just walk in and steal the players.."

I can only dream.

That is a pretty low comment for a President of a rival club to make.

Low but true.

Until we get as financial as the Pies ( probably never ) then we will always have to grovel to the AFL.

They say jump and we say how high.

We should never forget that we need the AFL far more than they need the MFC.

If the dees folded tomorrow the AFL would go on with hardly a blink.

In fact they could transfer the players to GWS just like Fitzroy and Brisbane.

That is the world we live in.

IMO Eddie is right we can be raped and only Dees supporters are hurt.

No one else gives a stuff.

Whatever the case with the rookie draft there are now six days to go before the draft and we'll be picking up half of that number of players on the night.

If you have Foxtel then I suggest you set your IQ for Thursday at 7pm for the AFL draft.

The telecast is due to last 90 minutes.

Allow 10 minutes intro when Demetriou preens himself and hopes to high heaven that the wardrobe people have provided a suit that doesn't make him look the size of a GWS recruiting scout.

Then allow 5 minutes for a commercial break and pray that you don't get hit with that stupid RACV commercial.

Allow 10 minutes at the end for a commercial break (pray again) and the wrap up.

After making a small allowance for passes, I estimate that we can safely start watching at 7.43 pm and knock off before 8 o'clock for all three MFC picks.

They can do the countback from 10 to 1 if they like: the GWS selections don't really matter anyway. The way things are going more than half of them will be back home by the time they do next year's draft and on balance one will be a millionaire in two year's time if the franchise doesn't fold before then.

Enjoy your viewing.

Just been up North for a few weeks.

Has there been much news? FNQ gives SFA

I can't say I've read much more here.

Same ol threads. A lot of BS.

So here is some tripe to add to the pile.

That's about it in a nutshell regarding the televised draft. Pretty accurate on the 7:43 tune-in too I reckon.

And Adrian Anderson will have the task of announcing the format with particular reference to GWS' picks what compo picks are activated. We can skip this bit too.

6 days to go !

WJ there are so many different drafts now and so many conditions about who goes in what order and how many GWS get that my brain glazes over at the mention of a Draft.

Some time early in the new year can you tell me what wonderful players we have drafted.

they will be very good and we were surprised they did not get picked earlier.

No doubt they will be development types that will need to put on weight and they will be ready around 2016.

oh sorry I fell asleep typing!

Does it have a better chance than Bauer had on Oaks Day?

I thought Bauer was a certainty, so it has less chance than him. She will run well though.

Just outlined the Foxtel broadcast of the draft and it looks like another shambles as last year was. In our favour it will be all over for us in a few minutes.

Only 5 days to go for those that are still excited.

I'm getting more excited as each day goes by. I'm expecting: #36 - a small crumbing forward / tackling machine with a strong body and scintillating pace who can kick them from anywhere; #52 - a lanky, quick outside mid with exquisite skills on both sides, knows where the goals are and will be ready to go from round 1; and #54: Waylen Manson.

No way can it be the shambles it was last year. The commentators were too busy interviewing their subjects - often past draft picks whose careers were ending or over - to announce who was being picked and names were being quickly flashed across the screen. At times it was more about the presenters than about the players drafted.

I heard today that Jason Dunstall who was the front man on Foxtel last year was in hospital this week and won't pass the fitness test to do the presenting this year. Perhaps they could give the gig to the woman who fluffed up the Foxtel top model presentation last year. I'm sure it would be an improvement, especially for Demon fans who are only going to hang around for 10 minutes in the middle of the show.

A few big asks there given our lowly draft position.

I have a gut feeling that our first pick at 36 is going to be a 179/180cm small midfielder who can get the footy out of the middle, kicks well and is good at decision making.

Happy for the other two to be smokeys shrouded in mystery and discovered in remote or unknown parts of the country that nobody has heard of or seen. Jeremy Howe was a gem last year and Davis and McDonald both look good to me.

That would suit me fine. Sarah Murdoch is not only beautiful, but loaded as well. She could get us a huge sponsorship by convincing her husband that we are the way to go. Also she could have the opposition phones hacked so we could get all the inside info on their gameplans and general dirt, to be used as needed.

I found the perfect place for the annual GWS Best and Fairest dinner, the [snip - name of establishment deleted for legal reasons - WJ] in Little Bourke Street Melbourne. The food was ordinary, the service pathetic, the bill rip off and overcharging extraordinary and most importantly, except for my table the other 98% of the people there would know absolutely nothing about AFL football.

There are a number of fine establishments which serve food of the Chinese variety that are owned by Melbourne supporters.

What tempted you to go there?

I love going to [injunction] too. It's my absolute favourite place. I really love the steamed [censored] and the fried [patent pending]. I hope I can go there again someday . . . if I can still remember how to get there.

I see we have a training session on friday at 9.45 at gosch's paddock. I have the day off so will be there. Hope to see or maybe meet a few demonlanders there if you are free.

A bonus could be the first appearance of the newly drafted boys, if they are locals.

A few of the punters who took up your suggestion of backing Serengeti Miss at Mornington yesetrday might want to meet you too.

I believe it's still running.

Ah yes. Well that will be my last tip on horseracing for Demonland. Great name by the way, how did you come up with it? You should communicate with our own Bean Dailey.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
