Demon fans, it bewildered me. Early in the 4th, ball gets kicked to Frawley to allow him to pump it into the forward line and he seemed to stand and wait for the ball to hit the ground so he could pick it up and casualy kick it forward. Betts ran him down, stole the ball and returned it to the Carlton forward line for a goal.

Now, up until this point, the boys had done a great job of locking the ball in our forward line almost entirely up until that point of the quarter. It was about to be punched back in yet again and I was feeling fairly optimistic that if we could keep pressuring their defenders we could be quickly 'back in it' and could even had developed enough steam to cause doubt in Carlton's minds.

Then, against the play, purely for the above mentioned reason, Carlton get one back, momentum swings drastically and it was time to start taking the kids to the toilet for the train trip home.

I was down the punt road end and watched rawley run all the way back to the Carlton goals after the incident and I think he swore at himself about 6 times, minimum.

But, again in the 4th, he was on Judd as he was being rested in the pocket, Frawley went to take a leaping chest mark in front of Judd with, what I thought, was an air of casualness again. Judd managed to get his hand in under Frawley's arm and raked the ball free which then resulted in another goal.

Frawley is one of our most hard working, respected and solid players and I am constantly telling friends, colleagues and family members that he is one of the best defenders in the game today. But his seemingly casual play in the 4th almost scarred my scalp from me scratching it in wonder so much.

I am interested in other fans opinions on these plays.

Would have also been handy if Newton had have been able to kick a regulation 15-20mt pass to him on the chest.

That is why we suck. Basic skill errors, combined with the fact the players maing them shouln't be out there in the first place.

yeah.. i wouldnt so much have a go at Chipper as he had to al lbut reach back.. A very poor pass.. it ought to have been put 5 m out in front of him to run onto..Thats what we did back in teh day , before negative footy came onboard

No youre right watched the game on reply this morning and it was nothing other than lazy by Chip but again whipping boy Newton cops the abuse for it.

That said he put in tonight when 10 others didnt so don't blame him for being lazy.

Juice wasn't on his Pat Malone there, I can remember another botched pass by Morton down the punt rd. end in exactly the same fashion.

Morton seems to take forever to wheel around, square himself up, then fluff a weak kick. We nned players who wheel around and spear a quick pass across their bodies that gets there with speed and precision. You watch how many Pies players can perform this skill. That half a second gained can be the difference between a player running into a shot on goal or not.

I saw this incident and quite a few other times when he held back. I'm sure most will disagree but i thought Frawley was horrible last night

Definitely not accusing laziness (he'd be the last player I'd tag as lazy). To me it just looked like a misjudgement of Betts' speed. I'm sure he'd cringe at watching it. After the goal I think I counted Frawley looking at the scoreboard for the replay about 5 times. After seeing it he swore at himself again. You know it's things like that cause good players to come out the following week and play their guts out. Let's hope.

combine that with the gather into one hand, then spilling it, then the slow recovery once Betts was on the scene and it finished in an ugly passage for chip. he has no confidence right now it seems.

It seems that he doesn't have much upper body confidence right now, which is probably residual damage from his injury.

He is a gun, and offensively he continues to get better, but he has had some average defensive performances this year, particularly in the air.

That someone his size can take Betts out of the game is amazing though. And currently he and Rivers are the only two defenders we have left who actually deserve a game. He has no support whatsoever down there right now.

He should of gone up to meet it. Could have marked it but at least would have had the ball in front of him AND in the corridor. What he did was try to make it easier for himself but he ended up running backwards and off balance. His fault not Juices'

I think Chip would be highly embarrassed by that effort last night, particularly the way he was brushed aside by a much smaller player. But so should Green after he had an air shot and finished on his ass.

I think he is injured.

Was limping last week, and couldn't get into a sprint against Carlton.

Brave fella. Also Jurrah is looking injured too.

We can't take a trick.

It was a bloody awful kick and he decided early that he was better off taking it on the bounce. Then he took his eyes off the ball before he had it and fumbled, allowing Betts to move in and pick his pocket. Terrible play by both parties.

Chip had two shocking errors which both resulted in goals. Take them out and he was one of our best in a backline that was constantly getting hammered, honestly who would want to be in the backline for melbourne at the moment, you get the ball out and 20 sec later it's back again.

He's starting to show a bit of the dash again that's made him one of my favourite players.

Don't worry about chip he'll be alright - like reiwoldt not running into an open goal again when marked in the square - chip won't let it bounce again.

While its probably not cool to quote myself, I commented on this inability of Morton on the "Should we trade Morton" thread.

"We believed the wraps that came with him when he was drafted. "Elite kick", "Silky smooth", "Dominating at TAC level", etc. The year he dominated the TAC carnival he was in a fantastic WA team that dominated. He was able to receive a lot of ball in space and had time to execute. He was also very tall in that company and could mark well. The biggest problem with Morton, apart from his distaste for the physical contest, is his inability to dispose of the ball accurately unless he is out on his own and has time to balance himself. His kicking technique is flawed. There is a long ball drop and then he attempts to "shape" the kick using his foot. This technique has a high chance of failing under pressure situations and we see this with Cale regularly. Its very frustrating to watch. I can't see him correcting this and reckon we should trade him if we can get a good deal."

And in relation to Chip, when he stuffs up like that he curses himself. You can see that he is always about improving his performance. The improvement he has shown over the past two years is testament to this. He will look at those instances and make sure they don't happen again.

Yes, I like this too.

When he [censored] up he doesn't drop his head and sulk back into position like the bloke who used to wear his number did.

After he gave up that goal to Betts he punched his fist.

Body language is important in a team environment.

Green could learn something about keeping your head up, and your mouth open.

His form is getting slightly better (slightly), but his body language is atrocious still.
