Your informant must be a harsh judge because he was named in Vic Metro's official best list on the AFL site:-

No, they're just not into the spin that permeates this site.

EDIT: admittedly the comments were made at half time. He may have played a better second half.

LOL - a classic.

Viney had limited time on the ground in the first half but still attracted the attention of AFL young talent guru Shifter Sheehan (hardly spin from this site). As observed above, Jack helped turn the game in his team's favour early in the third quarter and 17 touches with 50% game time is not "ordinary" in my book.

Were you there ?

The person that told me is a fanatical Dees supporter that only went to the game to see Viney. That person has been tracking Viney since he was 11 years old playing footy with Ashburton. The person doesn't post at Demonland and was purely passing on their thoughts to me as a fellow supporter.

The preciousness of Melbourne supporters is truly something to behold.

Was Kevin Sheehan there (fair chance he'll be in the channel 9 studios later on for the filming of Future Stars so you can call him and find out)? Or the bloke who wrote this?

If anyone's being precious it's he who relies on what someone says about half a game and denies others any point of view at all.

I'm not relying on anything sweetcheeks. Viney had a quiet game and it's no biggie.

Have you ever heard Shifter say anything other than superlatives about any player ever drafted.

Cook up nachos tonight.

Just heard Jack has signed a massive deal with GWS!!!

I was there.

I watched the game with my own eyes.

I even watched the whole game.

My contact watched the whole game too and if you're interested I'll get a report on his second half.

What were their structures like ?

Why would I be interested in what your friend says about the game .... I saw the game.

If you want, I can tell you what our opinion should be about the game.

Yes please. I would much prefer your eye witness view on how young Viney went for the whole game than a hearsay opinion of half a match.

Who the hell tracks an 11 year old? Other than a peadophile or weirdo!

No I wasn't there and neither were you.

Have you ever seen him play?

Well I'm still really interested and waiting for both Hannabal's mate's account of Viney's full game and AOB's account. Keeping in mind Scully didn't dominate when he played underage TAC cup I don't think Viney has to be BOG for us to be satisfied but merely has to show he was competitive within the game and clean in his skills. Being named in the best is a good indication he was ok unless of course that it was a Demonland optimist practicing his "spin".

I look forward to the responses.

I share an innocuous text message about his first half and some supporters go into a 'spin' about a seemingly disparaging analysis.

I'm yet to hear about his second half, although I probably will in the Bullring after the game, but I won't bother sharing it. Better things to do.

The kid will be a bona fide gun.

To put things into perspective, my enthusiasm for Jack's performance is based on the background to his appearance in these championships.

Back in early May, I attended a function for a Melbourne supporter group for lawyers, the Devils Advocates, and reported on it in A DEVIL OF A TIME.

This is what Todd Viney said about his son, Jack:-

He has had some minor injury problems but just returned from the AIS-AFL Under 17 tour of London, Milan where exhibition games were played and Turkey where the lads took part in the Anzac Day dawn service at Gallipoli and is hoping to play for his school, the Oakleigh Chargers and the Under 18 Vic Metro team.

In the month or so leading up to Saturday's game, I believe he was  restricted to school footy and a warm up game for the Vic Metro. I don't think he played a game with the Oakleigh Chargers in that time.

He's bottom aged and it's been reported that he's not in the Vic Metro "A" midfield and that's why his being nominated in the team's best players is, on its own, a decent effort in my eyes. Every report I've heard or read on the game has praised him bar one and that one's based on the first half only.

I really can't see where the idea that having an interest in the 47th player on our list is "spin".

Sorry, I've been a bit busy.

Anyway, I saw young Jack play on Saturday. He was not dominant but he certainly was important to VM's win - especially after half time where he won some good contested footy. He's a genuine stoppage midfielder. Not particularly big, nor blessed with breakaway pace, but he's a pure footballer. He's got reasonable burst pace. Has great hands in tight and excellent vision in traffic and space. Good, neat left foot kick and seems to cover a bit of territory. Really hard and tackles very well.

I think the game was a step up in pace for him, as he played the game in a style that would have been more suitable to tearing up the lower levels that he has played at (ie, jogging around the ground reading the play and then just winning the ball because he's better than everyone else).

He's got some things to work on but, for a 16 year old playing his first championships game, there was a lot to like about him.

Given his age, I'm rapt with his progress, and it's likely he'll get taller. I know it's only hearsay, but a mate's son played in the game. My mate thought he played 'a very valuable 2nd half'(JV, that is). FWIW

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

Demonland's own Whispering Jack was not in attendance but he kicked off proceedings with the following summary of all the Preseason Training action to date. BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
