Jack Viney

Featured Replies

Does anyone know where Jack Viney is playing football this year and how he has been going in the early games or practice matches? Haven't heard much about him till we signed him? Do we get him this years draft or is it the year after? I'm assuming we will be using our first round pick, not unhappy about this I hope he's a good as a first rounder

Would be great if Viney could start off the same way Tom Liberatore has. Has anyone has seen him play? Is he the same type of player as Libba? Love the way he tackles and attacks the footy or are we hoping for more?

The interesting thing will be what pick we have to use to get him. Until I know that, he is not part of my immediate plans for premiership core.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but we are governed by the other Clubs in regards to what round we have to pick him? Isn't the rule something like if other clubs rate him as a first round player, then we have to use our first round selection on him? If we have to use our first rounder on him, then obviously other clubs think he has some potential too.

I'm only making that statement because I have never seen him play, and in no way am I questioning his ability!

Basically, yeah.

It is a bidding system to stop teams getting a potential top ten pick in the 40's (Hawkins)

For instance if Melbourne say that they will use pick 50 for Viney and Richmond come along and say well if he was in the Draft we would use our first round pick if he was available then Melbourne can either use their first round pick (Or next pick after Richmond?) to secure Viney or Richmond is obligated to take Viney if he is available at their selection.

Pretty sure thats how it works.

I think we have to use our first pick after the highest opposing bid. If we decline to do so then the club who bid is obliged to honour their bid and take him at that position. Since all early reports suggest he's a potential number 1 I think we'll be happy to use our first round pick on him.

Spot on.

So does anyone know how's he's tracking, where he's playing this year, how he has been going in pre season or early round matches, what year we get him and does he play like young Tom Libeartore?

According to the VFL Footy Record from round one last week, he is on the list for the Oakley Cargers TAC team this year.

I hadn't realised you were in such a position of power ;)

Didn't you get the memo? :P

You just never know who lurks on online forums! Just kidding!

I just get nervous when posters include young Jack V in their midfield plans for 2013+. The poor kid hasn't even been drafted yet and already people are placing expectations on him!

WIll the GWS draft concessions be up by the time he's old enough to draft? THat would be handy because our first pick may not even be the late teens which would pretty much be using a 2nd round pick to pick up a potential top 3.

They put him on a 5-year contract to the club late last year, with the playing part of said contract from 2013-2015. That's a signal of intent from the club if ever I've seen one. It'd be nice to see the club try to take the Tom Liberatore-Mitch Wallis approach to Jack, where those two have been actively training with the Bulldogs for the last two years and thus at this point have basically been ready to go and challenge for a slot in the side from the word go.

I've been to the last two open training sessions at aami and jack viney has been training with the senior side.

That'll make 5 Jacks at the MFC, all we need is a bouncing ball !

Who's the fifth?

Watts, Viney, Trengove, Grimes...

I spotted him in the change rooms before yesterday's game, having a chat to Jordie McKenzie... good to see.

As for where he's playing, I believe Oakleigh and Carey Grammar in the APS... and Vic Metro no doubt.

Does anyone know if he's grown at all?, I think he was ~175cm around the time our father son intentions were announced...

Clearly the Melbourne website should add a column next to the membership tally so that we can keep track of Viney's height.

And the amount of clanger kicks by Grimes.

If I'd been drinking something when I read that I think it would have ended up on the monitor.

From what I was told the other day he has grown a bit and it look as if he will have his father's height and build, he has got a great physique.

BTW i was talking to Jordie and he hopes to be back the first week after the break but I think he may be a bit optimistic, Robbie campbell was also hoping to be back then but I think he was being double optimistic.

It's just great to have a father son at the club

lets just hope and prey it ends up nothing like our last father son selection.. love the fact that the club have faith in him already to put up the $$$

One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
