TEEN TALENT ON TAP FOR SCORPIONS

Great story in the Cranbourne Leader on Casey's young signings for season 2011.

There are no big names but the club has a bag of players from the TAC Cup including Gippsland Power 2010 grand final players Aidan Lindsay, Tom Corry and Ryan Pendlebury along with Dandenong Stingrays Mitch Gent, Nathan Allen and Daniel Harrison, and Eastern Ranges pair Luke McKenna and Luke Hill.

Twelve Scorpions turned out in Melbourne's intra-club match at Gosch's Paddock last Thursday. They were Matt Fieldsend, Michael Riseley, Gus Patti, Luke McKenna, Luke Bee-Hugo, Jed Costigan, Tim Costigan, Aaron Purves, Wade Lees, Luke Hill, Mark Weekes and Mark Todd.

Some pen pictures from coach Brad Gotch in the article:

Mitch Gent (Dandenong Stingrays): "Looks impressive. He's a midfield type who just knows how to play. Looks good with his hands, good thinker, neat kick. A lot of upside. He's going to push (for senior selection) right from the start. He's had a setback with tonsillitis so that might put him back two weeks."

Nathan Allen (Dandenong Stingrays): "I watched him play in the preliminary for the Stingrays last year and was impressed. He's pretty quick, reads the play, gets on the end of the ball, uses it well. He's set his sights on having a good year."

Daniel Harrison (Dandenong Stingrays): "He's a big guy, 197cm, 198cm and very mobile. I've seen him ruck but we've got to teach him some key-position play because at his size it will be hard to come up against guys that are 203cm. A lot of potential."

Blake Carew (Gippsland Power): "Played for us as a 23rd man against Werribee last year and he did really well. He played half forward and a bit through the midfield and he put a lot of pressure on and was neat with his kicking and decision-making. Has to work on his fitness levels."

Aidan Lindsay (Gippsland Power): "Also had a game with us a 23rd player. He can play midfield, half forward, wing and works hard. Couldn't fault his approach. Has an awkward kicking style, which we're working on."

Tom Corry (Eastern Ranges): "Small defender who sets up the play. Has really good skills and knows how to use the footy. Has attacking tendencies. He's a bit like 'Stocky' (Michael Stockdale)."

Ryan Pendlebury (Gippsland Power): "Was on the verge of being drafted last year but he didn't finish the season off well. They found out he had glandular fever and a hip complaint. Had a really good game for us last year."

Luke McKenna (Eastern Ranges): "Played as a key defender for Eastern last year and was third in the best and fairest. Looks like he's a very good defensive player who can shut opponents down. Is quite athletic and likes to have a dash but his kicking is a bit ugly at times."

Luke Hill (Eastern): "Only played the last six games for Eastern last year. He was playing local footy when they spotted him. He's 196cm and pretty raw. Just needs to be educated a bit and probably has to find that next level of intensity."

A good read - I watched the players from Casey play in the practice match last week was impressed.I thought Purves could really develop as a player.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
