Paul Johnson and Tom McNamara

I'm ok with threads like this but please people, the guy was a good small forward who carried us for a few years there.

In fact, he should have been AA one year.

He's said a few stupid things but he is still part of the tapestry of the club - good and bad.

I'm not willing to throw him under a bus just yet.

The reason i think this is that we now have four players leaving our senoir list in Miller, McDonald, Bell, and Cheney. And we have McKenzie and Spencer being upgraded to the senior list. That leaves two picks in the draft but considering we traded Cheney, a contracted player, for a draft pick 52 it would suggest that we would want to use it. So that means that our third pick 49 and fourth 52 will be used. This means we need to de-list two more players.

Johnson Mcnamara are the only two real options, Maric i guess is the third potential.

I then think that at least one of them will be rookie listed.

I think rpfc(I think) might have been right in the end... had we gotten Hale Johnson might have been in the gun. As it is, I'd say McNamara and Maric and Johnson are 50/50. (Are any of them contracted?)

Maric will not be delisted, not even close to it.

McNamara to rookie list? May get an offer elsewhere, pretty sure he signed a 1 year deal only for this is year

PJ to mature age rookie spot as ngr tall.er ruck insurance.. or delist..

Maric will not be delisted, not even close to it.

No way will Maric be delisted, I agree.

He will develop further this year, and hopefully push into the side...

Can't we still delist Newton ? time for fresh blood in rookies

McNamara to the rookie list sounds like a pretty good idea considering we kept Warnock.

If McNamara is moved to the rookie list that would mean we'd first have to delist him thus risking the chances of him being picked up by another club through the draft/rookie draft.

I think we'll do very similar to last year with Meesan and Newton, who were both contracted, but were delisted & re-rookied so at least we didn't have to pay out their contracts and get nothing in return.

What we'll do imo is Delist PJ & McNamara and re-rookie them. We should have no problems in getting them in the rookie draft, they would not be on any other team's radars.

That way we'll use pick 12, 32, 49 and 52 in the national draft.

We'll also have room to still make 3-4 rookie selections, since McKenzie & Spenser upgraded, Meesan and probably Healy & Hughes delisted, maybe Newton delisted as well

Last year Meeson and Newton I seem to remember had 1 year contracts to run.

We told them to nominate for the draft and if they were not picked up we would

put them on the mature age rookie list.Which is what happened.

If we want spots to use picks this could happen to any or all of the three you have listed.

Not a bad idea with PJ as he would be available if we had a long term ruck injury.

But the risk is another side can pick them in the draft. Probably not much of a risk with PJ.

But why does everyone thing we want to use the fourth round pick!

First three seems fine to me.

I was under the impression that we were cleaning out all our rookies to replace them with kids, but I heard this a while ago and I could have heard wrong.

Or a mix up of rookie-ing TMac , Pj gets a years reprieve as insurance and remains on seniors list so can play if required; injury to Jamar etc. This doesn't require an elevation . Newton is delisted as we know what he has/doesn't and so creates a space on rookie list . I think this allow three picks in draft plus one new rookie

Spring cleaning hasn't finished yet for sure!

As with Newton and Meesen, Mcnamara will nominate for the drafts. If not picked up he may be rookied.

FWIW I reckon Mcnamara will be a much better chance at getting picked up in the draft than Newton and Meesen.

I think Meesen has a chronic foot problem which has killed his career and also any likelihood of nominating and being selected by another Club.

Thats the risk but does any one think Mcnamara has much to offer!

I have seen him a few times at Casey and thought he was an average VFL player.

I would rather keep Hughes than McNamara!

I would rather keep Hughes than McNamara!

I wouldn't.

Hughes was first drafted onto our rookie list 5 years ago! in those 5 years, he's played 2 games.

Looking forward to next season, i don't think he'll play even 1 game, considering he is in direct competition with Green, Pettard, Jurrah, Bate. Even Sylvia, Tapscott and Maric would play half forward before Hughes.

Are we going to have in on the list for 6, 7 or 8 years without playing at senior level? He's a nothing special player

I thought we would only use our first three, but the 52 we got from hawthorn still should pick up a reasonable youngster and seems a waste to give cheney away for absolutely nothing

I have a feeling that he would get picked up. Is a meat and potatoes defender and they are currently in demand. I also think he will make it as a senior player of sorts. Would be happy to see him remain at the club on the rookie list.

I agree 'old dee',,, I think that PJ is not good enough to offer us anything by keeping him on, even as a mature rookie. IMO, he'd be in the way of giving game time to Spencer, now we've given young Spence , 2 Yrs.

We may pick a better ruck option in the pre season, IMO,,, and equally may not. Either way they play it, PJ had his chance this year in the 2nd half season to show he still had the belief. Time to move on.

I also agree that I'd prefer to keep Hughes on,, compared to keeping any of the other rookies. http://www.footywire...-danny-hughes-1 He still needs another 4 kilo's on his frame. ???????

Although I cant comment on Rhys Healey, as I haven't seen enough of his play.

Happy to keep Newton as rookie.

That would be the only potential 3 current rookies for me.

Edit: On reflexion, I can see a rookie mature ruck could be useful if one of our main rucks were injured.

Yep, Time to rejuvinate the rookies. PJ wont go and either will Maric too suggest otherwise is blind.

Stuff that.

If you're really keen on keeping PJ, rookie him. Waste of a senior spot.

We've pretty much got a clean out of our rookie list. 6 spots available. With GC having the draft picks and GWS rookie picks. rookie pick round 4,5,6, you're pretty much scraping the bottom with 150 odd names been called already.

Be brutal and cull to ensure we use all our ND picks. Use our rookies picks to keep the NQR's as insurance.

I agree we should use 4 picks in the ND.

So for that to happen we need to drop 2 more players. I'd say it could be any of PJ, McNamara, Maric or Martin. Whichever 2 it is I'd put them on the rookie list (obviously if they are contracted they have to be put there). The first 2 would be my preference.

Meesen I believe has retired. I'd delist Healey and Hughes. They both have some level of talent but can't bring it consistently to VFL level yet alone AFL.

Then I'd keep Newton on the rookie list and add the 2 delisted guys. That will give us 3 "live" picks in the rookie draft. Obviously best available but I'd be keen for one mature ager.

I think Meesen has a chronic foot problem which has killed his career and also any likelihood of nominating and being selected by another Club.

I agree- similar fate with Laycock from Essendon- but if he was right-after Doctors agree, I'd give him a go as a rookie.

I wouldn't. He's a proven crock that cant stand up to the physical rigours of AFL. Its time to look at other options.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
