Last minute deals

I think a play for Jesse White is essential. He is perfect for what we need, a big young body to crash packs in our forward line and then go into the ruck for Jamar. I would be willing to give up a fringe player and pick 32 for him.

Say Bate, Warnock, Maric?

I might even be convinced for Bate+Maric+Pick 32..

BTW, Whats happening with Bruce?

Just out of interest, who was the last player traded to the Melbourne Football Club during the exchange period?

Could it be Meeson or Pickett?

Technically the last trade pick was last year, when we gained pick 11- and got Jordon Gysberts. However, by memory the last player gained trade was Clint Bizzell .Others will correct me if I'm wrong. If memory serves me correct gained Bizzell for picks 2001 - Clint Bizzell to Melbourne for picks #17 (James Kelly) & #41 (Henry Playfair)

The last trade where we lost a player was Travis Johnstone - for pick 14- Jack Grimes in 2007. I think they are the last but I stand to be corrected.

In:

2005 - Byron Pickett and picks #54 Port Adelaide Melbourne Draft Picks #28, #44

Out:

2009 - Brock McLean Carlton for pick 11 (Gysberts)

Happy for you to have an opinion, but why wouldn't Sydney buy that deal? We are giving them a 2nd round pick, plus a player that has obvious ability but never given enough opportunity, who was also a number 21 draft pick and is only 20 years old. Plus they have a proven history of being very open at trade time.

Yeah, yeah, while we're at it Sydney could trade us Trent Dennis-Lane and pick 38 for Liam Jurrah - jist as likely.

Warnock for Setanta is worthy of consideration if Setanta could ruck a bit.

What qualities has Setanta shown you Old? I rate him alongside Minson as a hard hitting heavywieght who seems to do little or no damage with the ball.

Setanta turns 28 next year and his best footy has been played as a mobile non marking tall forward which is really a not quite right position. That'd be a no for me. At best a late pick if Footy Department thinks he can pinch hit as the secnd ruck/utility tall.

Warnock actually plays a position so I think he is of more value than Setanta. If not to others then to us. Perhaps Ol 55 has been getting to friendly with Talking Carlton types!

I don't think you could call either of them smart footballers, and although Setanta does have an excuse it doesn't help us. I think Setanta is more of a threat up forward than Will, Minson definitely has far greater rucking creds. I think we're looking for FWD-ruck so that leans me towards Setanta, he doesn't solve #1 ruck depth but that's a different question. I don't think Will really provides much forward threat. I think Setanta gives 100% and he's reasonably agile for his size - well more than Hale or Minson - so he could apply some forward pressure. On the other hand he has some history that questions his mindset. He'd be a big question mark but I think Matthew Warnock is going to rely on injuries to get a game in 2011 and even then is maybe not next selected - he's OOC at the end of 2011 and who could blame him for being off for greater opportunities then?

Demoniac, I haven't been to TC for a while but I might pay them a visit. BTW, it's a long time since our old R.S.F.A days and we still haven't won a flag!

I'll ask a similar question that you asked me - why would Melbourne give up Warnock for Setanta?

rumour and speculation via a bigfooty report off SEN...Cheney off to Hawthorn

I like Kyle, but he's not quick enough to take the best small forwards, and he's not skillful enough to be an attacking rebounding defender. Would probably spent next year at vfl level. In terms of medium defenders, he's behind Bartram, J.Macdonald, Grimes and Bruce. Also, guys like Bennel and Bail would be put to half back before Cheney would be put in the team.

It would goodwill by Melbourne to trade him considering he's in contract, but has asked to be traded for more opportunities.

I'm not against it, if we can get a pick in the 50s (considering that's what we originally drafted at).

Hawthorn have apparently offered pick 51 for Cheney. Hope he gets a game for them, and i can enjoy him trying to keep up with our fast small forwards with his slow foot.

Hilarious.

Brock McLean wants to know if he has been forgotten that quickly at the MFC?

A 26yo who has played 51 games including 13 this year and is currently playing VFL for a 27yo who has played 72 games including 14 this year and is currently playing VFL.

Carlton had no Key Forward this year, Setanta had ample opportunity to step up and make it his own, yet played 14 games?

Warnock's best is up there with any full back in the league, but struggled to get a game toward the end of the season, with his spot taken by an All Australian defender.

Can't really see how this is more realistic than my trade offer for White.

For free too!! Yeah we should be bloody excited haha

But most of the Melbourne guys have left for China, so does this mean no trades will be done today from us?

His spot was taken by Rivers and not Frawley.

Warnock is an honest defender whose best footy is capable. It is not up there with the best of any FB in the AFL.

But most of the Melbourne guys have left for China, so does this mean no trades will be done today from us?

Shrewd thinking.

A mate that works for the age just told me Daniel Kerr to Carlton for something involving Andrew Walker.

Also bombers are chasing Simon Black, offering him a truckload more than Lions?

He's heard nothing involving the dees and doubts a Cheney deal will get done.

We'll see.

I'm not sure either of these deals would get over the line.

Edit: looks like "deep throat" has twittered these deals too.

I'm still skeptical.

Jay Clark is twittering that the Tarrant to Collingwood deal has been done, with 4 teams involved and swaps of picks & players.

He's short on the detail.

Tim Harrington just arrived........

There's an article out there I just read (can't find the URL for some reason) that also says Tarrant to Collingwood is done.

The whispers are that Carlton is going to land a 'big fish', and there are separate whispers saying Kerr is on the move. Putting two and two together...

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
