5 players sign new deals

Featured Replies

Great news. Not sure about the decision to sign Strauss for two years though. One year provides greater flexibility. IMO we have made this mistake before with Newton and Cheney.

Offering a young player like Strauss a one year contract is inviting him to walk out the door for nothing. West Coast (or the Gold Coast) would happily take Strauss with their early pre-season draft picks. Contract negotations are two-way and have to be fair to the player as well as the club.

Too true but too easily forgotten by too many.

No problems with any of the signings there. Bate didn't have the best year and I'm not convinced he's in our best 22 at the moment, but that's not to say he can't get there, nor that he doesn't deserve a spot on the list.

What are you inferring to there??

Strauss has a lethal kick (if you've watched him) that is a dead-eye, especially with kick-outs! Perhaps he will have a role in the coming years...? Taken at pick 18 in 2008...

Well done to Tim Harrington for securing the services of 5 more important players.

:)

I agree that Blease is more important than Strauss. Strauss has many concerns about him right now, no doubt he has a great kick on him but might be better suited to playing with the blinkers on.

Hopefully Strauss sorts this out with his new contract.

Really want to see Blease signed. But this will happen, I suspect that what has happened over the past 2 years the club and Blease are likely sorting what is acceptable for both.

That's right, Tappy signed a 3 year initial deal. Bruce 2010 expiry as you thought

I fully believe Blease will be a star and rated as highly as Scully, Trengove, et al.

Strauss I don't think will ever reach these heights.

Must admit that to date I haven't seen a lot in Strauss that inspires me but I am prepared to give him more time.

I gotta say, out of all of these, the player i was most worried about losing was Bail (i did think the rest were going to stay anyway)

But bail seems to be a bit of a jet.

So these will be the next group of players the Dees must be 'wary' of when GWS intrudes in 2012...

With all the signings through the season and in the off season that list will be a lot shorter by this time next year

Fair call. Some of them won't be signed this time next year though - those being most of the inexperienced debutants/youngsters there.

warnock is signed for this year and next year... so end of 2011, Cam Schwab confirmed this on the podcast thing he was doing a while ago.

Won't be an issue as most of those will be locked away nice and early. The list management guys have been great the last couple of years and i have complete faith in their decision making and contracts.

Well done Deel.

When I saw the news tonight and how they predictably dwelled on Watts (and fair enough... signing him for 3 years is awesome), I got to thinking about Bail, and how he would have been ripe for a Queensland shift. Plus the fact we've got him for 3 years (and spectacularly cheaply in point of fact), is huge, as he can't get snaffled for nothing... which is what we would have gotten had he been snapped up.

I predict big things from this kid. Solid B-grade is well within his sights.

Great news, very relieving to see even more of the younger players keen to stay with the club. Makes me a lot more confident that none of the Demons will bite the GWS carrot next year.

Great news inking these 5 guys.

Blease must be the next one to put pen to paper!!!

But I thought GC bought Watts a house...

you had to go there...didn't you

Great news and faith in our young fellas.

Bate is important and I would love Strauss to work out.

Well done Wattsy, one gets the feel its a heavy incentive deal

great to hear.

who else is yet to sign on for 2011?

I saw on a thread that Bartram isn't contracted into next season. Seems weird to me. He's a very quiet player that gets no media. You'd think if he'd have been approached by GC the media would have been all over him, regardless of his small profile.

He's a very quiet player that gets no media.

He had a double-page spread in the Hun Sport Liftout on the weekend that we played the Cats this year (as he is a Geelong boy). Same as last year too I think!

Did he? Wow.

So did Daniel Bell though.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
