On the back of recently seeing Trav Tuck get his third strike for drugs, and reading about Matthew Stokes getting caught drug trafficking PLUS the Fev stories and the St Kilda stories that unfolded rah rah rah... I cannot help but be oh so proud of the mighty Dees.

The only times Melbourne are in the papers is:

a) for their post-game review; and/or

b ) to pump up the side that could be "The Next Big Thing"; and/or

c) milestone games.

This also goes for many other clubs too, but I love the way the Dees are seemingly so disciplined for such a young YOUNG list (second youngest in the AFL behind Richmond and we saw what Connors, Cuz and co did earlier in the year).

The Dees clearly have fantastic leadership, role models and mentors at the club. Good to see young Col Sylvia has found his way.

But until now... our young list has done an extraordinary job of controlling themselves - we all know how out of control the average 22-23 year old can be these days.

Credit to the senior guys, the leadership group and also the coaching staff... but also the team in its entirety for following procedures.

Great post.

When you read about players who formerly had some issues with off-field misdemeanors and attitude but who have now taken it open themselves to perform acts of community service i.e. Slyvia taking time to visit children in hospital then you can be pretty confident things have improved. Not too mention that young guys like Scully, who I understand never touches alcohol (I assume for professional/ health reasons) then you indeed will be fostering an environment that encourages self-discipline. I have no doubt that Jim Stynes would also be a factor here, I can't imagined how ashamed I would feel for doing something stupid if I had to face up to the media or have Jimmy be forced to defend my actions.

Understandable... coming from a guy who doesn't have the word "positivity" in his vocabulary.

Strikes refers to drug abuse if I am not mistaken. Of course we may not know that PERHAPS the Melbourne Demons are all on 2 strikes, but that goes for every other AFL team so we're all on an even keel! Yes?

However, all other indiscretions are made public one way or another and Melbourne have had zilch coverage. No rape assaults, no drink driving's, no smashing into other cars, no beating each other up, no getting 16 year old's pregnant by accident and no late-night shenanigans such as peeing on walls and glassing patrons. And don't tell me "But a Melbourne player may have done something wrong but it was never made public so nerr!!". That's bull - indiscretions by a football player are always made public. There's good reason for that.

So instead, the Dees go out to the Casey Community and run programs that are so successful they are being looked at to be run at a national level (i.e. Read Like A Demon).

I also don't see the Travis Tuck thing as a 'discipline' issue. The guy had been receiving treatment for depression prior to this incident. You have to understand the cuthroat, high-stakes nature of being an AFL player and the effect this has on a lot of players.

Travis has been suffering from depression, and then he's virtually told his career as a footballer is over at the age of what, 21,22??

I'm really, really deeply uncomfortable with what is basically bragging about something that we as fans have so little knowledge of and less control over, and which is so immensely fragile.

I'm proud of the club's visible culture, I've been proud of just about everything I've heard from the club for a couple of years now.

But it's not a pride that goes to blowing our own trumpet. Your reputation isn't settled 'til your dead. Sometimes not even then.

i would suggest that it is entirely possible the trafficking drugs charge came about because when caught with drugs the immediate answer was 'they aren't mine' and when he was asked 'whose are they then?' and he replied 'I bought them for a mate'.

given it was such a small amount he may not have even been charged had he said that they were his.

im also not sure i believe the story about 'helping out a mate' and getting caught. it doesn't gel right with me. hypothetically if you aren't interested in using them, and you aren't dealing them, why would you purchase them and supply them to your friends?

meh this isn't true, i have been out on the tear before, and seen jared rivers trying to fight someone, and brent moloney trying to fight someone on different occasions. Also seen Nathan Jones with Simon Buckley standing with his pants down outside metropol on fitzroy street. I'm sure this happens at all clubs.

im just saying you can't be so niave to be like "awww aren't they model citizens." Because the truth is, they're 20 something yr old guys, who are like everyone else. It always surprises me to see on the news over and over about shock horror, some of the players take drugs! Its like no sh*t

Well, that's exactly why he was charged with 'trafficking'. He panicked. He would've been better off keeping his mouth shut until he got legal advice...Who knows?? I'm sure AFL players would meet all kinds of people with all the socializing they do.

Its a moot point really. Its done and dusted, and tbh there's far more pressing issues elsewhere to be concerned about..He's already had to experience the ignominy of being publicly shamed. So let's move on...

buying drugs for a friend off a known local drug dealer, regardless of the amount is trafficing, and if he(stokes) was not a local AFL player would have been charged for trafficing. The charge was not a joke, the end result was a joke!
