But on the Jack watts issue whats your opinion?

Was he rolled out too early?

Or should he be playing now getting experience

or

Does he still have to develop further before Melbourne will play him?

Which initself lends itself back to the first question?

I think the writer has a fair a point but unfortunately we're not in the position of Hawthorn (50,000+ members) and need/needed to generate some excitement for the members. In hindsight it was probably a bad decision to play Watts last QB but at that stage the AFL were threatening to take that match away from us which would've cost us a @%#@load of cash. The decision was made to play him to try and generate some interest and lift the crowd enough to maintain that fixture. We've managed to keep the fixture and now we can rely on genuine excitement rather than hype, spin and potential.

20/20 Hindsight is beautiful. MFC had their arm forced on QB, Jurrah had to play because...well, he's a footballer and no one else was there.

What do we gain by trying to second guess ourselves?

There is another thread about this article, and IMO users of Watts puns should be put to death.

I think there has been that "great white hope" aspect to the dees over the years where one player was supposed to make the difference. I think Diamond Jim Tilbrook is emblematic of this (maybe Carl Ditterich I cant remember) - but Melbourne isnt the only club to have once gone that route.

Watts is another more recent example in that some supporters want an instant result. I dont think the weight of anything except a shoulder into turf caused Jurrah's injury.

For Melbourne to be great will require class (which we have) but also unknown lowly ranked players achieving their potential and doing the team thing and a bunch of other things leadership, list management administraiton the whole thing.

On the Watts development issue we should be patient let the guy grow a bit - he was only just playing high school footy. His pace and tank and skills will make him valuable - I suspect he will be given a few more games with Casey and when he plays well he will get a run in the ones but he may be in and out for a while - to be expected - he should earn his spot like the rest. I think the decision to play him last year before he was ready was wrong but perhaps understandable given other pressures on the club. Its early days but if we play the rest of the season like last Sat night the future is bright.

I can understand JW being played last year on QB, but i didn't agree with it.

But i was not privvy to inside information-quite possibly our Queens Birthday status was right on the line, so a huge crowd was demanded by the AFL-so it was done.

In terms of Jack Watts development as i said last week it was like throwing a puppy in front of an oncoming racing car... he survived but i would have prefered him to play in the Wet Coke game last year.

But it's the past, and what does this Hack journalist know anyway-Betcha last sunday morning he wrote about how Brilliant the Demons list is.

I have worked with journalists before & to them putting the boot in is fair game-Conversely the following week that same team is Legendary.

I find it hard to believe people think we erred when playing Watts in the QB match and that it was a publicity stunt.

I think those people would be the same fools who called for Bailey's head earlier this year and thought we'd finish 2010 with a priority pick after the hawthorn match.
