Poor Old Kevin Sheedy

Featured Replies

Not to mention the premiership clock he draws - I was always led to believe midnight was window wide open. Time for the irrelevant old fool to move on to bad TV commercials.

Its hard to even rationally respond to the article, because his line of argument is logically inconsistent and sometimes completely incoherent. I mean, he SEEMS to be saying the following:

- Melbourne and Richmond have been poor on the field in the last few seasons and will merge. Even though both clubs recorded a modest profit last year, and while true that Melbourne are set to beat their membership record for the third year in a row while Richmond are already close to 40,000 members in what looks like being a terrible year for them. These numbers will decrease when both teams improve on the field, gate attendances will drop, and sponsorship revenue will dry up.

- Neither Richmond or Melbourne have a young player who the majority of football journalists are happy enough to go out on a limb for by publicly proclaiming said young player to be the next Ablett, Carey or Hird. No team in the AFL has such a player, because journalists normally aren’t stupid enough to put their reputation on the line by making such a bold call. But the fact that NO team has one isn’t my point, the point is that Richmond and Melbourne don’t have one. This is an indictment on both clubs recruiting teams and they will merge.

- Dean Bailey is building a club in the same way that Hawthorn had to after the failed merger in the mid-90s; i.e. he is not focusing on building a premiership winning list, but is instead looking at things like community initiatives, brand awareness and just every single facet of building a club, because as coach of the senior playing list, that is his job. He beat me for the position on his own merit and he is doing the right thing. Melbourne will merge with Richmond soon.

Is that pretty much the gist of it, or am I being unfair?

He already has done that...Aquamax Hot water Services!!!!!

He can go and you know what. We are not going down this path ever again. I am so sick of our great club always being brought up with that dirty m word. Sheedy is nothing more then a tool.

That was an incoherent rambling mess.

(summed his article up perfectly)

Sheedy = drop kick = no longer relevant to our game.

The article is full of contradictions.

He states that recruiting is to blame and then names our last 4 years draft picks as the "Fab Five".

He states that our recruiting is poor yet Richmond poached Craig Cameron. So is CAC good or not?

He states that we will regret not taking Natanui yet Watts will be a terrific player.

He reckons we're kidding ourselves talking about premierships, but I haven't heard one word from anyone about premierships from either club anywhere.

Its lazy, pathetic, embarrassing and insulting.

The HeraldSun should be looking at his contract.

Someone should spank him.

Is this the same Kevin Sheedy who said the addition of Ben Cousins would enable Richmond to win the flag last year?

In the main body of the article Kevin Sheedy writes:

"The thing I can't understand is how both footy clubs have consistently picked up midfielders. In my mind you err on the side of height"

In the box titled 'Coaches Call' Kevin Sheedy writes:

"A club needs 12 midfielders these days with the number of rotations"

So Kevin, why can't you understand why the Dees have cnsistently picked up midfielders whem you acknowledge that a club (presumably for 'club' read 'team') needs 12 midfielders these days with the number of rotations?

Except for the bit where he went "It's not fair! You didn't want me as coach so I hope you all get cooties" I'd say you were right.

I hope Bails gives it a read tomorrow over a coffee before Recovery sessions!!!

Look fwd to Footy Classified tomorrow night. I know Lyon does not think much of Sheedy at all and they have had a long history of jibes at each other, i expect G to return serve tomorrow night, actually i almost guarantee it!

I'm with you. If he has the time though.

Spot on. Wonder if Demetriou text him to report this ?

Like Demetriou text his colleague to make sure Naitanui gets the nod for rising star this week - reference Sunday H-Sun/Scott Gullan.

Nah, you're way off the mark. You make it sound far too sensible!

Haha - this is a bit embarrassing for him imo. What a nob.

I more surprised that an editor appoved it for publication than anything!

I hate this old fool more and more every day, can't wait to smash GWS in a few years time.

Talks up a Richmond Melbourne merger in 2-5 years. Why Kevin, because we both rejected you?

The only concrete evidence he gives of a failure in recruiting is taking Watts over Nicnat and a vague reference to drafting too many mids. I can't find one other reason, in this peice of absolute drivel, for us to merge.

I've always said ( for what it's worth ) that Sheedy would be a nobody now if all those years ago he'd had the guts to coach Footerscray or Fitzroy. And wouldn't that be nice no Kevin Sheedy in the Hun every second day.

Sheedy is like an embarrassing and increasingly deranged great uncle. Engages your mates with crap stories no-one wants to hear and is just a bit worse every time you see him.

Perfect description.

Wow..........I'm amazed that the person who wrote this article was in charge of an AFL club only a few years ago!

You're out of touch Sheeds.........GWS have erred badly in making you their inaugural coach!

You shouldn't be left alone with sharp objects, much less an AFL team these days!

Sheeds job right now is as a spruiker.

He's meant to say sensational stuff and get his name and GWS in the headlines and minds of all in NSW and the country.

Every now & then he'll go too far and say something way too ridiculous but so far he's filling his job description.

Those misses are becoming more commonplace though.

Read this today, at it really angers me.

He clearly hasn't researched into this, we are on the up now, not down like he's suggesting

And when he has a stab at Richmond for getting cousins, he was the one who headed the operation to get him!

ahh good call. i was to infuriated to realise.

mods do what you do best

I think Sheeds needs to watch Cam Schwab's Whiteboard Wednesday presentations to learn the modern ways of a football club.

I still cannot work out why he wrote that article-it makes no sense, unless he really does resent the MFC. I would have thought he would be encouraging to Bails as he is another of his past players.

I love sheeds, but he lost a lot of my respect over this article. I hope it comes back to haunt him BIG TIME B)

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
