Leaving home for the ground yesterday, it was raining and rather cold. Here we go again I thought, lousy weather and a small crowd and the media hacks 'll be screaming for us to play games against Adelaide, Fremantle et al at Princess Park or North Ballarat or the like!

(Remember the twilight game against Adelaide last year with around 14,000 at the ground?)

So it was a pleasant surprise to see a reasonably good crowd of 23,000+ turn up!

Would like to have seen another 10,000 or so in attendance but, if we win a few more who knows, we may see crowds of over 30,000 to these "interstate" games.

And of course, the bigger the crowd the better for the bottom line as well!

Have to saythat 22,000 of that crowd were cheering for the red and blue. Maybe more. Adelaid had only a very small number at the Pontsford end. What was the crowd at t6he North Melb game on the weekend? The TV shots I saw looked like there was about 10

Don't they have to crack the 22k mark to make money at Docklands? I remember at their home game against the Dee's last year the crowd was quite small and one of their supporters told me that they would suffer a financial loss from the game!

It is good to see there is interest in The Dee's again!! 23,00O is excellent considering day/time/weather. People are getting excited. I reckon the MCC will be pretty full up this weekend again.

We got 39,000 and 40,000 when we played Adelaide in 06 and West Coke in 05 when we were at the top of our game.

Not quite accurate.

Round 7 2005 - Melbourne v. Adelaide (MCG) 39,475

In 2006 we played them at Carrara infront of 8,258 people, and at AAMI infront of 41,364.

I was pretty happy aswell to see 23,000.

Pretty crappy day, school holidays so people might be away and interstate team.

Yeah, Given that we were against an interstate team and so relying pretty much entirely on our own supporters it was a very good effort. Especially for that time on a Sunday when so many parents and kids are doing their own sporting activities and can't make it to a game.

I don't want to be a wet blanket but I reckon 27,000 is about par for Melbourne vs Adelaide. Out of all the interstate teams (not including those that are historically from Melbourne) they are the ones with the biggest following in Melbourne. We would've lost some attendance because of the weather and the fact the match was at one. 23K is 'ok' rather good in my book.

For the record, that crowd of 39K against Adelaide was boosted by all the people participating in the 'pink lady' initiative which, from memory, was between 5-10k.

We were about 9000 up on the same game last year, so people are are coming back to our matches - and not just Melbourne supporters. If we are the only team playing at the 'G' during the day then we can attract uncommitted fans, provided we can promise them a red hot go each week.

I thought we were loud and proud yesterday. About 4 weeks ago on SEN we copped a bagging from a listener after the NAB challenge match against the Eagles. He said we were passive, too quiet, and we didn't get stuck into Josh Kennedy when he ironed out Sylvia.

Yesterday there was a terrific response when Trengove put us in front with a goal in the 3rd. We had our first win in 3 AFL games and 4 NAB cup games and it sounded like it.

I know they had 4 injured players to add to their long injury list. I know we won the free kicks 20 - 12. And yes we had trouble putting them away in the last. But everyone needed that win yesterday - supporters, club and players.

Imagine if we'd lost?

Thought the numbers we got to the G yesterday was fantastic!

Big well done to everyone who came along & for the people who didn't - you better bloody have a bloody good excuse for it!!

Massive game this week, if we beat the tiggers (which we should) - we turn at after the first month 2 - 2. A great start to the year if we can.

Who cares about the numbers, the whole Northern Stand was up and about! The standing ovation given Trengove as he sprinted off after his goal was epic, to say the least. Fantastic stuff. Almost brought a tear to the eye.

And given that was the hard-core of Melbourne fans, imagine how good a crowd we'll have when all the band-wagonners get on board! Could be a thing to be reckoned with... then again, let's hope we don't end up like Hawthorn.

I would've been there but slept through my alarm after a big one the night before. Spewing I missed it.

I guess that's because on TV you see a lot more of the Southern Stand. The Northern stand, especially the MCC, was pretty well populated.

And yes, it was raining at the first bounce for about 5 minutes.

perhaps they couldn't be stuffed getting the bus down given the way their mob is going

23,000 is a good "base" - now we need to build. Great atmosphere and for the first time in my life my kids left the MCG buzzing about our players. I know it sounds small - but 1 "high-five" has made all the difference.

Personally I've never given up believing. However, now importantly & most importantly ... my kids now believe.
