legally he was within 5 m of the ball, but as the geelong player had the ball at the time its not like the hawks player was laying a shepherd, and also had no intention of chasing to get the ball. he just ran straight into stevie j and knocked him over.

as far as i am concerned that should be charging. stevie j didnt shepherd, he just got run into. it was also a filth act.

I was interstate for much of last year, so didn;t see any of Melbourne play in '09, but if I had seen that, I wouldn't have liked it I'm sure. But the other issue apart from whose team Guerra and Bartram play for (and the bias that might go on because of that) is the fact that Guerra is a serial offender. He knows he's doing it, but he has and will continue to do so because it is extraordinarily effective.

Hence the "he will continue to do it because it's effective" part of my post. I don't like that players can do what Guerra does, and I don't like him for doing it, but I don't blame him. I blame the AFL for not changing this rule as have done others which can cause injury (running past the ball, sliding into someone's head, head-high bumps/tackles, the White Rule, and so on).

i think its fair to say that the intent between bartrams and guerras was completely different. one was a poorly executed tackle, whereas guerra wanted to drill stevie j and thats fairly apparent. the hawks wanted to work him over.

Disagree. Because it was within 5m it was fair game. I thought it was sensational. Showed the ferocity of Mitchell and the sheer competitiveness that quite frankly pinched the hawks a flag they should never have won. Those bumps hurt, but they don't injure. What Guerra did injures. What Mitchell did was inspirational. I loved it.

Probably. Thanks for that. It was a tough year for Roo. Given the Captaincy and expected to lead them to a Premiership at the ripe old age of 8, can you blame him for tearing up? I can still remember Eddie McChins' commentary, along the lines of "Riewold's down. He's hurt. WHOA this is massive!" as if Germany had just invaded Poland again.

Is it okay for Gardner to grab a guy around the neck and throttle him from behind? To me, that's worth a free kick. I didn't see what caused the 50 metre penalty after that, though, but I think that Leigh Brown cannoning into Riewoldt's back 50 metres off the ball also deserves a free kick, don't you? BTW, the commentators thought the umpires did a great job tonight and I would agree. When it comes down to it, the best team won, and as long as that stays the case, then I'm happy. Of course, I'm even happier that it was at Collingwood's expense, though.
