My perfect vision would be a midfield/winger. He runs all day and can get into space freakishly.

He will be best untilised by running hard into the forward line and getting a mark in space or a cheap one over the pack, not a contested mark like a CHF. Same goes with him floating down back, if our backs are in a contested mark situation then Morton can punch or take a 3rd man up mark using his height rather then his body on body skills which he lacks. All this can be done through the midfield and on a wing. Use his best attributes to their full advantage.

I agree. He will become either Mr Fixit or Flexible- type of replacement for Cam Bruce. He could play CHB,CHF, WING,Midfield, basically wherever Bails or the match committee want him.

The way he played on Goodes and beat him hands down really excites me

A hardy perennial of a question, though a good one. I'm sure it will keep popping up year by year, and part of me wonders whether we'll even have a clear answer by the end of Cale's career (2025???). With his height & good hands, his ball sense and awareness, and his massive tank, he will be a nightmare to match up wherever he plays. He also showed against Goodes how good he can be when he was asked to match-up against one of the greats.

Cale's "best position" will vary depending on who we're playing - a bit like Goodes, actually. In other words, rather than use him as "spare-parts" or to plug holes, he'll be used in an attacking sense, where he's likely to do the most damage to the opposition, where he's going to give the opposition coach the most headaches.

That's the beauty of our side for the future - we'll have so many players capable of doing serious damage that they can't all be covered, and Cale is right up there near the top of the list.

I reckon as soon as this season we're going to see the scraggers pick him up. He's amazingly good at finding space, becomes a link-man, racks up possessions easily, and pretty soon will be demanding the ball instead of being just another red and blue shirt.

The thing that worries me is his kick. He has a laser, but when he's under pressure, it does go wayward. Yes, I realise all players flub them when they're close to the opposition, but I reckon I've seen him suffer more from this than most. Or perhaps the difference is more noticable because he IS a good kick.

At the end of the day, I'm glad we have names that opposition coaches will have to think about. The last one was probably Trav.

I'd back flank him so he develops a penchant for offensive thrusts. If/when he bulks up a bit, he will be capable of even a key 1/2 back or 1/2 forward position. He is an elite distance athlete and so has a big engine. Do not discount him having an effect in an onball placement down the track.

What concerns me about young Cale, is his lithe frame. He is entering his 3rd pre-season and according to Melbournefc.com.au he is 192cm but tips the scales at a mere 83 kgs. To put that in perspective Luke Tapscott, doing his first pre-season is 12cm shorter (180cm) and weighs 4kgs more (87kgs). Now granted Luke Tapscott is a man child, but then consider that Jack Trengove weighs 2kgs more than Cale, yet is 7cm shorter. Cale has a massive engine, as evidence by him winning the time trial at the club the other day, but unless you are freakishly talented like LJ, you need muscle to become a dominant player in key position roles. I think the time has come for someone to introduce Cale to Protein Powder.

I would love to see him with a body more in the mould of "Chip" Frawley or Matty Bate who are about the same height at Cale (193cm and 192cm) but tip them at 91kg and 90kg respectively.

out of interest his brothers are listed as 186 and 80 (mitch) and 191 and 87 (jarryd). So he'll probably never tip the scales at 95kgs, regardless of how much he tries, but the 88-91 is probably around the mark. much heavier and his strengths will probably suffer - endurance and evasiveness.

I think he is naturally a lot more of an attacking player than a defender which is why bailey ran him off a half back flank for much of last year - teaching him to run harder the other way as well.

Rosso, do you see him as an attacking wingman/HF or as an inside midfielder or as a KPP?

Like other posters I see Cale as a Goodes type utility, having the ability to go in the middle but also dominate on the wing. The other position I think he would dominate in is opening bowler for Bulleen's 3rd XI
