Good article about the draft.

She agrees with rpfc that the draft will be thinner and weaker than other years, due largely to the lack of 17 year olds. Toy would have gone top 3, according to some recruiters.

She reckons some clubs won't take more than 3 picks in this draft (the mandatory minimum) as, outside the top 10 or so, it becomes a bit of guesswork.

Trengove's season with Sturt has been compared to Buckley's and Gibbs' seasons in the SANFL.

The talls in this draft aren't as good as other years. Maybe only Butcher, Carlisle and Talia will be first rounders.

Butcher could still go anywhere. Has flaws, but has some stand out qualities (marking and speed) as well. Quayle reckons he won't get to 11.

"Cunnington would almost kill someone to get to the ball, and can go forward; he and Trengove are probably the best marks in the midfield group."

Interesting quote. I saw an interview with Cunnington on the AFL website. He has a very thick neck! Looks like a rugby forward. So apparently he takes a nice grab too.

Would anyone (apart from you Krazy4JT ;) )really mind if we picked him up instead of Trengove.

I would be shattered. Rather Trengove than scully. How many footballers lift and find another gear when there team needs it? This kid does.

It would be blunder of the century if we picked him before JT.

As much as we'd like to we can't get all the first rounders.

Good article by Emma. Gives some insight re: blokes like Panos on where he may fall. Interesting to read one recruiter spruik that Butcher might be well in the mix (ie. picked early).

Yeah it was good

"The run-all-day Scully and the equally complete Trengove, but unless you're a Demon fan don't get too excited."

heheh cop that, everybody else. Thank you Jordan.

I wonder how long we will be saying this for.......... 15 years ?

Poor ol' Tigers..

Yep. IMO she's one of the most insightful footy journos going 'round.

Hmmmm..... Cunnington hey??? Instead of Trengove???? Interesting.....

I am pretty sure I don't need to reply to this ridiculous question.... haha....

Based on the fact that he has a thick neck??? JT may not have a "thick neck" but I'm not all aboard his train for his neck size  The kid plays footy how it should be played.... He is the next Joel Selwood..... He is the next Gary Ablett..... He is the next Bartel.... Hell.... If all three of those boys could possibly produce a child, it would be Jack Trengove!

Thick neck.... I have heard everything now ;)

Gladstone Small had NO neck.... Let's take him :P

Agreed, JT and Scully are well clear of the other prospective draftees in my opinion.

And yes, Barry, since when did neck thickness become an attribute to look for in draftees?

Stuff Buckley's kicking drill, we need an additional measurement at draft camp in order to assess the thickness of one's neck

And if JT was at the draft camp and did Mr Buckley's world famous kicking drill, he would've smashed it!!!

Yeah it was good

Really enjoyed reading that as I drank my coffee this morning.

Just goes to show everyone who doubted the tanking tactic, how important it was for us to get no more than 4 wins.

This draft is already thin, not to mention the last uncompromised one for as many years, and we're getting two of the best in a shallow spread of quality.

Compare our position to that of Richmond come November... it's so good it's laughable

Just putting it out there that the gap b/w these picks might not be so great. Pretty sure I quoted the article on his marking ability and ferocity at the ball.

2 weeks ago this forum was split on who to take at number 2, Trengove or Morabito. Now, after two Trengove games since, anybody who puts forward a discussion on the possibility of a different selection is in your firing line!!!

You need to pull up and put your manners back in. You're already due to be mildly embarrassed by your incessant displays of man-love, don't compound it by selectively quoting people to suit your own needs. It's a site for opinion.

I rekon Barry Dawson would have a pretty thick neck!

have played school footy against TOY and although he is obviously good i saw him get torn apart in the Grand Final against Assumption. Didnt look like he gave a [censored] to be honest and it was a pretty big match

Of all the draft hopefuls, Trengove is sounding more and more like being closest to the perfect package. Midfield marking ability in the corridore is something that has hurt us greatly over the last few years.

I was interested to know a bit more about Black and I am now satisfied that if we go with say Carlisle before him it is a good call. We need a tall KP more so than a tall utility I think.

2 weeks ago this forum may have indeed been split on who to take at no. 2

One year ago, I knew who I wanted Melbourne to take.... I am extremely grateful that you decided a month and a half ago to grace us with your presence on Demonland, and I respect your opinion..... But don't come in here and tell me to "pull up and put my manners back in" when most of the things I say are in jest.... Hence the ;) or :P or "hahaha" after most of my responses....

As for me being "due" to be mildly embarrassed by my "displays of man-love"???? HaHaHa.... Is there anything wrong with that???? If I was to love another man??? I love a lot of things in life..... I love my gorgeous fiancee, I love my 9 month old son, I love my family, I love football, and I love the way Jack Trengove plays football.... I see no need to be embarrassed about any of the love I throw around....

The whole changing of my name on here to represent my affection for a certain possible draft pick was meant as a joke because a certain few people had commented on how much I was mentioning him.....

I think if anyone needs to pull up and put their manners back in, it is you my friend! :o

I have been listening to, laughing at and agreeing with people's opinions on this site for a lot longer than 6 weeks :P

If Quayle says he was likely to go top 3 he was likely to go top 3

If Quayle says he was likely to go top 3 he was likely to go top 3

I heard he would have been pushing Scully for #1. A certain top 3 pick

I can't believe people are missing the really big quote in this article...

"Anthony Morabito, a 190-centimetre wingman from Western Australia. They seem the distinct top five at this early stage. That Sydney offered Richmond draft picks six and 14 for No. 3, but didn't make Fremantle the same offer, tells us something."

I found that to be a HUGE quote. The fact that Sydney were willing to give the Toigs 6 and 14? And only go 3 stops better on the top pick? Massive call. Though perhaps not THAT massive given the gist of the article (the whole, nothing past #10 thing).

Were they trying to get their hands on Morabito or Martin, though?

Fascinating insight, and I for one didn't know ANYTHING about that deal til I read it today.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
