Facilities is an issue. Worst in the AFL in 20 years. That effects the culture. There is no "home" for the players, so less bonding. People underestimate that. It effects injury management, team morale, bonding, dedication. There was no place the players could really call home, so less of a "team" feeling, so less dedication to the club and history. I don't think anyone could argue that we have had too few players who have played and just didn't care for the jumper. Look at Essendon. An outstanding culture there. Haven't moved and don't have to. Still deep within Essendon and the suburb, with a consistent "home" and great place for players to bond.

2 of the best quarters & 2 of the worst quarters the3 club has ever played. Remarkable Game-I still have the VHS somewhere.

The 2nd and 3rd quarters of that game were remarkable. Yze and Vardy threading goals from tight on the forward flank. Bizzel playing like a man possessed. There is that amazing sequence in the 2nd quarter where Biz gives about 3 desperate second efforts. Walshie kicked a real crowd lifting goal in the third too from the MCC forward flank. I was in the Southern Stand. The place went nuts.

We would have played the Pies in the Prelim the next week. Now that would have been something.

There was something magical about that '87 side.

It's nice to consider what might have happened, but in all honesty, I think we wouldn't have beaten Carlton the next week unfortunately. Wilson and Flower in all likelihood wouldn't have played. And after the Prelim we would have been spent. We also may have felt a little satisfied in just reaching the Grand Final. Pretty much every team that won through to a Grand Final from the Elimination Final copped a flogging. I'm not sure we would have been much different.

But most of all, the 87 Grand Final was played in 32 degree heat. Carlton were always going to beat whoever won that Prelim, us or Hawthorn.

I think 1990 was probably our best chance. We had a week off and then blew it.

About right. Weve never had the killer instinct since '64. Never. We've had teams that have gotten themselves in a position for an assault on the premiership but never had that ability to step up that extra level and challenge themselves to reach the ultimate. Happened numerous times under both Northey and Daniher.

Good teams measure themselves against the expectations and achievements of others. Great teams set their own standards and continually challenge themselves to reach new heights.

Sadly we would not have won in 87. Both Brian Wilson & Robbie Flower had Broken Collar Bones from the Preliminary Final. Those Bastard Carlton Cheats would have eaten us like they did Hawthorn.

Two words stick out like a beacon when i think back to that game- Clint Bizzell. Remember his remarkable solo effort down the wing; just pure determination and guts. I will never forget that passage of play, breathtaking.

Also, remember Robbo kicking about 5 behinds (in his 100th game, i think?) and knocking Adem Yze out in the last quarter when Yze was running hot. Not one to remember...

I got so drunk that night i fell over and chipped my tooth running across the road on the way home.

Also that Night in the last quarter Bizz fluffed up a kick in, which resulted into a Tyson Edwards Goal, this also swung momentum there way, Bloody Melbourne am i ever going to see that GRAND OLD FLAG?
