These past 100 years always there has been the illusion that MCC members are such quiet gentle folk. The theory has been that the only sign of emotion from a typical Melbourne member is when his cigar begins to glow.

Well on Saturday their mouths were too wide open to hold any cigars.

They were frenzied. They stood on their seats,they shook their fists and their language would be best described as over-expressive. And the paper never stopped raining down-it was almost like getting married.

Maybe the wind was blowing it over,but I have the deepest suspicions that members up there in the top tier were feverishly tearing up newspapers.

After the game the members crowded into their big ground-floor bar,thousands of them. They sang their Demon song 2200 times,or was it 3200 times?

It was closing on 7 pm when the team came in. In the traditional style they paraded around on top of the bar,delicately picking their way in and out of the glasses.

Players like Brian Roet took over the beer guns serving the beer and marking the glasses rather beautifully as they were thrown up.

Meanwhile the large portraits of the contemporaries of old W.G. looked down sternly.

Regretfully,one has to admit that at this stage the members began to sing their version of the Collingwood song.

Good old Collingwood forever,

They know how to play the game,

Side by side they fell together,

To the tune of the Demons' game,

Hear the barrackers are squealing,

Just like barrackers do,

For the Premiership it's a cakewalk,

For the good old Red and Blue!

However,you must forgive the Demon fans. It's been a long time out in the cold-no flag since 1960.
