AFL's 100 million plan for redevelopment

Now we could al go on ad nauseum about priorities here. Might the AFL not be spending money closer to home etc. But if they are going to do this..and Vlad certainly seems hell bent on it then lets for the moment take it as fait accomplit.

However, from al lof this comes ammunition I feel for an argument to be put for the AFL to look not at another CBD ground for its next 'smaller" cpacaity AFL ground in Melb but to possibly run with our old favouriote of a chestnut..the Superdevelopment of Casey Fields into a Boutique facility.

From the article comes the buzz..."boutique stadium"..."but the AFL is looking to stage the team's non-blockbuster games next door at the showground. Having a smaller, purpose-built ground would provide a more intimate football experience for AFL fans and prove more cost effective"......."it would increase game-day capacity from about 13,500 to about 25,000."..

And why all of this ? Because it want s to push into "the heartland of western Sydney" i.e it wants to firmly get a foothold into its new frontier.

Now, just run with me for a moment. If we transposed the West of Sydney for the East of Melbourne..and put the argument that as a newish burgeoning region full of non commited folk towards spots ' that is we cant take for granted that many of these new rsidents will follow AFL that you have precisely teh same siutation with possibly the same solution; develop a Stadium to entice them in as well as making a statement to the region that FOOTBALL IS HERE !!

Yes Im totally biased on this but I would think sharper minds than I could pen a decent business case for this. Going to be a hell of a lot cheaper to do Casey than another CBD venue !!

THE AFL could be forced to move premiership matches interstate or even overseas if Australia wins the right to host the 2018 or 2022 soccer World Cup.

But in exchange for giving ground to a competing code the league would inherit a new set of stadiums built to host the largest event in world sport.

That would likely include a new AFL stadium on the Gold Coast — overcoming one of the most significant impediments to the AFL's successful expansion into the area.

You would think that part of the deal could also be the establishment of the boutique 3rd stadium in Melbourne. It would have longer lasting benefits than matches being relocated interstate or overseas. While being obviously far more expensive, it is a neat fit with the AFL's other objective of establishing the boutique stadium.

While we spruik Casey Fields as the 3rd stadium, there is also a soccer strategy from FFV for 12 Centres of Excellence around Victoria.

Casey Fields is the site which is likely for the CoE for the metropolitan Southern Zone.

In addition, if the World Cup comes to Australia, we need 32 quality training complexes in the nation. The FFV stratgey, while providing for the growth and development of the game in Victoria , also assists by ticking boxes for international training complexes.

The fact that Demetriou and Buckley met this week and discussed co-operation regarding stadiums and scheduling matches around any World Cup bid is incredibly signifcant.

Casey Fields with an FFV CoE and a boutique AFL stadium just might be a major piece of the puzzle.

Thanks Scorp for reminding me of this. I read of this idea sometiem ago and at the time littlel gears started whirring about some synergy.

    Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals.
