This thread has some morons in it, for an 18 year old guy like Morton who could still play TAC cup cause of his age he does damn well.

His disposal isn't bad, the issue is he is to cute with the ball, he is very cocky and tries to be fancy. He was actually one of our best today, people get to worked up in stats, he presented, he ran, he applied shepperds.

It was not his best game but calls for him to be dropped for a rest a greatly over done right now. He was put forward for a bit today and you can't argue with his presenting, and leading skills, didn't give up and was good to see.

We all know he needs 10 kilos. No [censored] he does. The thing I find stupid is when he plays well he is the messiah then suddenly he isn't good enough yet.

Open your eyes and see he is a bottom aged draft pick trying to create something in a crap team and build his career. If you honestly believe his kicking issues lately are a lack of skill you haven't been watching, if anything he is to skillful, which forces him to attempt the impossible TJ like kicks when he should go the easy option.

I would pick Morton once everyday and twice on Sunday over Palmer...

will be an onballer, back flanker, forward flanker and in years to come will provide so many matchup issues.

he is something very exciting....

I don't know that he's trying to be too cute with the ball. I think it's more to do with where he's getting the ball and what he's got in front of him.

He's often receiving the footy on the end of a couple of handballs through the midfield, and it's his kick that is sending us into the forward line. This is a good thing for both him and and the team. It's good for Cale because it gives him confidence that if he runs to the right spots, he'll get the ball from his teammates. It's good for the team, because you want your elite players with the ball in their hands when it matters.

The downside of this is that he's playing in a team that's bereft of key forward options and he is having to spot up a player if we're any chance of scoring. The option of going long - which his kick is ideally suited for - is not available to him. Other teams know this, and defend accordingly.

Couple that with his slight body, a crisis of confidence and you get the results we've seen in the past two matches.

Thus, Morton is being forced to create something with his kick and it's not coming off. Big deal. Like many here, I'd much rather an elite talent like Cale learning on the job, so to speak, rather than racking up cheap, meaningless stats at Sandy.

OMFG were you at the game today?????? And before you carry on, I said many posts ago he should stay in the seniors....

OMFG I was!!! and he was!! named in the best on the radio when I was driving home, named in the best in the Herald Sun today and named in the best in my own mind. He presented, he pushed hard and won his ball, tried to create but couldn't just because some of his kicks were to cute and some very crap doesn't mean he wasn't good.

He used his limited body size to create contests, layed some very nice sheppards, and always ran to the right spots without the ball.

Take your eyes off the supercoach points and concentrate on what he is doing with and without the ball. Look what he has to kick to etc.

I disagree about him going to Sandy. There is no need yet. He has just come off a weeks break at HOF game and a week off with sickness.

I don't think I ever said you personally bagged him, I said SOME morons in this thread, not ALL the morons. Good to see some other posters agree to, because it's true if he gets 20 possesions next week and 2 goals he will once again be the messiah.

with all due respect, its called popularity and mainstream. the more people who use the site, the less quality the discussion.

when you get bad threads (such as that brock mclean thread) everyone jumps on and bags the thread out. if that doesnt happen, all the [censored] get in a discuss how bad brock is.

its better when there are less members, because there is less trolling.

maybe it should be more selective? lol

Nah can't have that, id never get in haha.

You are right but I would not like to shun other Dees supporters and I know you wouldn't either, but the quality of discussion has definately gone down lately, however I would not like to put people down, as I was new once and I bumped heads with a few prominent posters.

Everybody has a right to an opinion, no opinion is wrong, just really poorly argued.

The Mclean thread is total rubbish and alot of the stuff I have read regarding, Sylvia, Morton, Miller are also rubbish.

If there is one thing you can't teach a player, it's being able to read and understand the play. He constantly runs to the right position and he has pace, and I could snap him like a twig.

Exactly! It's his first year at AFL level, and already he's showing that he has the nous and smarts to match it with the best. What is really letting him down at the moment is his body size, which I reckon means he has to pull out of some contests or whatever and that has hurt his confidence to the point where it has affected his disposal.

I haven't read the HS today, but if he was named in the best I would be astonished!

I will say this up front, I think Cale should be a future star for us, I think he should stay in the senior side, I think young players are bound to have ups and downs. BUT I think his turnovers were THE major turning points of the game. His 1%'s were nothing more than should be expected from a senior player. I accept this knowing what he is, and hopefully what he will become.

Thats my opinion, yours is he was one of the best. Fair enough.

Generally I think most people on this forum are on the same page with Morton. 99% positive.

Oh, and for the record I've never logged onto Supercoach or Big Footy (?) in my life!

The MFC coaching staff are excited by the enormous upside in Cale. Let's hope he can put the weight on. Always in the right spot - Looks alot like an Adam Goodes type of player. Tall, athletic, good hands, finds space, reads the play, he will kick it beautifully again, 3-4 years time he'll be a very, very good player. Just remember this team is going to take time, 3 - 4 years of development and maybe, just maybe the footy gods will allow us what they denied have for so long denied us.

Cale sort of reminds me of a young Bruce.

Gets in all the right places, knows how to get the footy, good mark, good goal sense, sometimes isn't as effective with the footy but he certainly has time, and probably more natural skill.

Just hope he is able to become a great leader for the club, and get his kicking back to what it was a few weeks ago. He might be a bit tired, i bloody would be at this age running around in AFL

I would play Morton at Sandy. His skill level has been disgraceful I thought that was what we got him for cause he was skilled. He was clearly worst on ground and I thought he cost us the game I can't believe he was named in the best in the paper. I'd prefer to see Whelan in the team but Morotn will bounce back he's a quality kid but needs to get back some confidence.

He looks built for umpiring. lol

Haven't seen anyone as slight as he play for Melbourne since Cam Hunter played a couple of games late in 2003. I think he weighed 68kg when we drafted him.

Not even Cam Bruce was as skinny as Cale when he started out, and he was skinny!

What about Junior?

If you were going for a premiership in the next two years and one of the two had to be in the team, you would probably pick Palmer because he looks as though he's already playing his best football and he has no visible upside. If premiership success was a few more years down the road then without question you would take Morton. It's short term vs long term, and considering our position, we definitely made the right choice.

Posted
I don't mind that Cale isn't dominating this year, with his build it was always going to take a season or two for him to fill out, however at pick 4 I'd expect him not to be a 'project' type of player.

All 18 year olds are "project players". Very few kids can walk into AFL and just play. Some can do it for a few games or even half a seaon. Cale has had a few good games and I thought he showed pretty good skills in a few of his games. I am sure it is a mind thing. Like most young players when they feel that they belong at the level they become better and more consistent.

Posted

Morton will improve in leaps and bounds when he's more confident that he and his body belong in the AFL. Confidence is a wondrous thing. I also think that he tries to get away with what he was able to in the juniors, but with less time and far more phyisicality he's paid the price a few times.

When he works it all out he'll be fine. And an elite AFL player.

Interesting points in the for and against columns.

Cale will be a champion and has already shown some serious ability.

One thing to note: The roof was left open during the early afternoon so the heavy falling rain could complement the damage to the ground done by the friday and saturday games.

That said, his efficiency was extremely poor for (at least) the second week in a row. I dismayed myself by repeatedly groaning in anticipation of the assured momentum killing turn-over. When the chips are down and the team rallies, turn-overs like that are the hardest to shoulder.

If we were even aiming for 8th this year I'd say drop him back for a week - but we're not.

So as long as playing Cale doesn't deprive us and 'future player(s)' of deserving promotion, the early big league experience will put a lasting polish a true demon of a player.
