For the history buffs-this is not the first time a Trott has walked away from test cricket in his prime due to mental stress.Can anyone name the other time ,player, circumstances etc.

No I just googled him,and he finished cricket long before WW1.

There was also mention of Ben Wardill being a mate who visited Trott at Kew asylum.

There was a Wardill who played for Melbourne back in the day.

Should we look at resting our two most important quicks from the last test (Harris & Johnson) from the flat track that will await them in Adelaide and instead keep them up our sleeve for Perth?

We could bring in a second spinner (Fawad Ahmed) so we'd have a leggie and an off spinenr and also bring in Faulkner to share the new ball with Siddle and give our batting some extra depth as a draw in Adelide would suit us just fine.

Siddle & Faulkner share the new ball. Watto to bowl first change, but still cap him at no more then 10 overs a day, and then the specialist spinners of Lyon & Ahmed.

We're not going to be able to bounce them out in Adelaide, so if we can play it smart there and hit them hard in Perth, that could then see us with a 2-0 lead heading into Boxing Day.

Just something to consider I reckon.

They've picked the same 12 for Adelaide but there was a small rider in there with relation to the fitness of the fast bowlers. Wouldn't surprise me if there's one change.

However, we need to reinforce our advantage and the team will be itching to get at England again. It's certainly an interesting scenario though and your idea has merit, TD. I would lean more towards still only going with the one specialist spinner though (Lyon) At issue here is the drop-in pitch - how is it going to play?

I reckon if they make any sort of change, Harris might be rested. Has he the capacity to be at his best for all 5 Tests? (given his injury history) Or we could just roll up our sleeves in true Aussie style and just get on with it!

If we win the toss and make a stack of runs, we could therefore rule out the possibility of losing the Test. As is nearly always the case, it will be an important toss to win.

I wonder if any of our Test batsmen are playing in any of the 3 Shield games that start on Friday? I'm assuming the answer is no but a couple of our blokes could do with some time at the crease ... also, it might be worth noting to see if any of our back-up fast bowlers are being rested in these matches.

Lyon seems to have confidence in himself now to be able to restrict runs .

Let these batting all-rounders take some load off Harris.

With Mitch Johnson-you dont stop a train .Let him bowl until he is finished.

Pick Ahmed if and when he gets a big bag in Shield cricket.

If we rest them in Adelaide, we significantly increase our chances of losing. Faulkner and Siddle with the new ball are toothless compared to Harris and Johnson, and the last thing we can afford to do is let them bat themselves into form at Adelaide.

I'd rather play a good game in Adelaide, hopefully win it, and then rest in Perth if absolutely necessary. Lyon's bowling very well, so give him good spells in Adelaide, rotating the pace bowlers and using Watson and Smith (even Warner and/or Clarke too if possible) to keep the pressure off.

Interesting team selection from England. They've given a cap to Ben Stokes, who bowls a bit of pace, which suggests they're bringing Panesar in for Tremlett (instead of Bresnan, which I expected).

And now Bailey too. Four out of five batsmen to get himself in then get himself out. Each should have made more runs than they did, and we're now tracking for a sub-par first innings total on this wicket.

Poor work after most batsman got a start and did not go with it on a good batting strip.

It's very true and players like Haddin and Johnson who play through the arc should be able to take advantage of it.
