  1. Rumours of our demise have been greatly exaggerated. Wonder if the experts still think we will fall down the ladder.
  2. Trivia time. I went to Demon Wiki to see who besides Pig had worn 14 and there are some illustrious names but one caught my eye. Chris Aitken is a forward I remember who showed enormous potential but was always injured and I remember he wore number 5. A quick check showed he left Melbourne for the bush but returned 5 years later and at that time wore 14. The trivia is he has a younger brother Nicholas Aitken who is a well-known Melbourne supporter whose stage name is " Wilbur Wilde"
  3. The future is a bit of an unknown but it was time to create spots for Woewodin, Laurie and Howes. Jordan left, he was offered a contract but expects more game time in Sydney. I am not entirely sold on him. Gus is a big loss but if he had been ok to play would he still be able to play at the same intensity? Multiple concussions may not have left him the same player. The list needed a refresh and players we have been developing in MFC game style for 2 years need to play. Billings is a very good addition and we have yet to see McAdam & Fullerton. The latter received high praise at the launch for his work ethic and athleticism. He before injury had been the standout in the group. In the match sim, Goodwin admitted we moved away from our defensive game in an attempt to be more attacking. It was a practice match take it for what it is. Maybe this is a pause/transition season where the team morphs and gets that bit better than the last 2 seasons, which compared to some years has been pretty damn good with successive top 4 placements. Hopefully, we don't get injuries at the wrong time
  4. C'mon, all you legal eagle Demonlanders! Who can Gus and the club sue? Gus is now an invalid from being a player and should be compensated. This has ramifications long beyond his playing career and the retirement was premised on changes already developing in his brain since the big hit.
  5. I share everybody's sentiments and wish Gus all the best in the future. Does anyone have the email address of the AFL, Laura Kane or Andrew Dillon so we can all write to them and let them know how we feel about Maynard, the tribunal and their negligence? Pick 1 & 3 from their draft now retired due to concussion On a different note, I find it disturbing that recent scans have detected microscopic changes in Gus' brain. This does not augur well and clearly wasn't how Gus thought it would pan out. A curse on Maynard!
  6. I have no problem with that and hope it takes the pressure of Petty to try and hasten his return.
  7. It is the media taking a punt after years of success that MFC will fall away. In the past this has been the case for many teams. Indeed the names that got us there are ageing and in some cases age has diminished them. Others have left. What, only track watchers would know is how the club have been quietly rebuilding and developing players to take the team forward. It takes time to develop players and toughen them up to the rigors of AFL. Bowey, Rivers, Picket, JVR, McVee, Chandler, Woewodin and Turner are the new core of the team who have taken time to make their mark. Laurie has taken 3 years, Howes could be anything and McAdam & Billings are ready made footballers. Schache was a top pick who is a big man still learning how to play and the other rucks are young. They take 5 years to develop. In Tholstrop, Windsor, Sestan and T. Brown there is another group of developing young guns. First year players rarely walk straight in and dominate. Long term success depends on future planning, player development , team structure and a lot of luck. The core structure is there, the leadership is still there and the list has lots of class. Footnote I still cannot believe Ginnivan, Frampton, Murphy, Lipinski, Markov and Hoskin-Elliot have a premiership medallion but their team play won them a flag.
  8. Go Ollie a natural footballer
  9. The face of Caulfield Racecourse has changed dramatically over the years. In the mid 70's many clubs used the back straight for pre-season running. Queens Ave had lots of parking, and markers let you know what was 100m, 200m and 400 m for those dreaded repeat sprints and you ran on lush grass. To get access to the commons was under a bridge of Glen Mira & Kambrook. It has always been a seriously underutilised access parkland. Where there were 2 major carparks there is now a massive high rise of so-called student housing. From this thread, I think it is obvious that this is the site to make our home base. There is so much infrastructure there, facilities and what will draw the funding is coupling it with a sports complex that welcomes other sporting tenants. From other articles, it is a reasonable assumption that AFLW and to a lesser extent AFL need a 25K seat stadium for certain games. Let someone else build them. Without knowing the club plans in detail I think Caulfield is fit for purpose for world-class training facilities, housing administration and being accessible to players staff and supporters. Get in before someone else gets in or someone decides we need wetlands for birds and fauna (like Glen Eira have done to the old Elsternwick golf course)
  10. How lean has Ollie Sestan become with a pre-season under his belt?
  11. 1. ? Aaron Rodgers
  12. The Salem family have sold Rock Salt and it is now under new ownership. A mate went recently and wasn't impressed with the new setup.
  13. Glen Eira council have bigger problems than this to worry about. The mayor is getting death threats and egged at a council meeting after closing some child care centres. Councillor Magee has been advocating the need for more space for recreation and as they have no money (except the 15 mill they planned to buy the old Elsternwick club with) and would welcome a facility upgrade a prestigious AFL club will bring.
  14. Rain and more rain. Friday is not going to be dry.
  15. Dear WCW I love your posts and note from the club photo gallery that both were there Monday. Jed in playing gear and running around and Petty in a tracksuit watching. So you were correct if you thought you said you saw the maybe just confused with who was whom haha! Love your work
  16. I read somewhere that all the list managers were meeting before Monday to have a mock draft. This adds to what you say that not deals are done on the night they are already in the can. makes sense when you think about it.
  17. Without having access to it I suspect they take Reid at 1 and offer MFC their future first for our pick 6
  18. This list is the best guest of where they think recruits will go including bids made on players IMO. That would equate to our pick 6 & 11 becoming 7 and 15 which equates to Saunders & Wilson which I don't think is a bad outcome. The only spanner in the works is if Curtin goes at 1 or GCS doesn't match a bid on some of their academy players.
  19. I loved the event and marvelled at the site of some of the olde footballers. The Carlton crew with a hobbled and hunched Percy Jones, Bruce Doull unchanged, Syd Jackson. I saw Sam Kekovich interviewed before the gate opened and delighted in his apology to Ron if he could talk to him 1 last time. Brent Crosswell was magnificent he is an orator who spoke so well. All the speeches were perfect, which I suspect being a state funeral were all written or ghosted by professional speech writers. Steven Smith spoke of Barassi's return to Melbourne and how he changed the culture and Richard Colles detailed how important Ron was in saving Sydney and moving the Barassi line. There have been many legends in the history of the VFL/AFL but in my mind none match Ron. They may have better credentials in some areas but no one could match his playing, coaching, vision, or persona and I doubt anyone ever will. I was sorry that his manager of 40 years Rosemary Long didn't get a chance to speak, she has dealt with Ron for so long and I am sure he was not always the easiest person to manage. Vale Ron, you were my first real hero
  20. I spoke with Sinead at the local coffee shop recently she is our only 23. She is a fantastic person and a great asset to the club. She is the number 1, number 23 in the club
  21. I don't particularly like the Melbourne synopsis. In fact, I don't find it funny but bordering on libellous.
  22. Up till now, Lamb has stated that we will go to the draft with 2 picks. However with the delisting today of Kye Turner one has to ask "Has there been a change in plan"? Under the 2-pick strategy we trade 2, 11 and something for 1 or 3 and use 42 for Brown giving 2 selections. Is this a signal that now we will go with 6, 11 and 42 adding 3 to the list?
  23. It is curse time. The last instance of a Collingwood player decking a Melbourne player and winning a flag was 1958. It took them 32 years to win another with the development of the Colliwobbles. I hope the karma bus hits them again and it another 32 years before they win a flag and have lots of close misses and losses.
  24. It was mentioned that luck and score reviews played a role and we did not get the rub of the green. The score review against Carlton shaped the flag. We win we hold top spot and I believe play Collingwood in the grand final and win.
  25. The night was great. It was an awards night not a vote bore-a-thon. It's so great to see the surviving 64 flag players get life membership. May was epic and even more vocal post count; honestly, he only said what most were thinking. He thinks we are better than them and he doesn't like them. He did say if he thought they were better than us he would congratulate them but was annoyed that we missed an opportunity. I do hope they find a post-career role for Pig his speech was heartfelt and sincere and he has left nothing in the tank to complete his career. BBB was asked by a doctor mate about his knee and said it was ok and he would play on and TMac needed more time to find form post-op but will suit up next year. Goody has his detractors but I came away thinking he is a very good head coach, drives the standards, is loved and respected by the players and has got this team into the top 4 the last 3 years which no one else has done. Sure he has his weaknesses but that is up to the assistants to cover the gaps. Kate said don't believe any media [censored] only what the club publishes which after the last week has convinced me is correct. Too many journos not looking for the true story but getting the first story. Pert's letter was brilliantly timed and answered the critics and the media scribes. We are reminded it took Geelong a decade to win that last premiership despite making the finals every year. They are bloody hard to win and everything has to go right.
